Abstract

This paper aims to examine from the perspective of Christian theology the Mohatu tradition, which is still practiced among the Saluan tribe in Simpang II village. The Mohatu tradition is a ritual for releasing the spirits of the dead, carried out 16 days after death, by placing seven to nine types of garden produce on the deceased's grave. Then the spirits will no longer come to collect garden produce which can result in crop failure. The research method is ethnography, with in-depth interviews as a data collection technique. Data were analyzed with reduction, display, and conclusion techniques. The informants involved totaled 15, consisting of traditional leaders and community leaders of the Saluan tribe, as well as Pastors and Congregational Councils who serve in the Saluan tribe. The study results show that the Mohatu tradition is a medium for the Saluan tribe to deal with farmers' crop failures. In the Mohatu tradition, spirits are believed to remain in the world (graves) and carry out their usual activities, including gardening. Because of that, the spirits can still interfere with plantation activities. This tradition needs to be transformed because it has the potential to slow down the development and use of agricultural technology by the Saluan people. Transformation is possible with a religious approach through contextualizing Christian theology about death. In Christian theology, God has power over life and death. After humans die physically, their spirits will return to God, so no more spirits in this world can affect human life.

Abstract

Social conflict often has a very negative impact on the community because it needs prevention efforts. One way is to develop the values of hospitality that exist in society. The Toraja people in South Sulawesi have hospitality values that live in the Raputallang culture. Hospitality values are very strong with Christian values. This study aims to explore the extent to which the relevance of Raputalllang's hospitality values is in preventing the emergence of social conflict in society. The research method used is a literature study of several published writings about Raputalllang culture. The study results show that Raputallang's hospitality values have four functions: problem-solving, self-introspection, social bonding, and social control. These four functions encourage every member of the Toraja community to continue to improve their ability to live in harmony with others in the midst of living together. This ability contributes to the prevention of social conflict in society.

Abstract

The family is the smallest social unit that provides the foundation for children's development and the formation of children's character and personality. The family is also considered the first and main source of education for children, including religious education. But sometimes, the education children get in families is less than optimal, such as in families with broken homes. Christian education that is less than optimal for children can affect their spiritual development; as a result, they become fragile in facing various pressures of life. This study aims to examine the spiritual development of children in broken-home families based on the concept of Christian pedagogy. The method used is qualitative with a biographical study approach. Data was taken by interview and observation techniques. The individual who became the research subject was a young girl at a local church in South Sulawesi. The study results show that child's spirituality in broken-home families is less developed. The psychological pressure she felt made her doubt the existence of God and His love for her. This seems to encourage the child to behave negatively and deviate. Against this condition, parties outside the family, such as the church and others, need to pay serious attention by involving them in the process of religious education that can make them feel the existence of God and His sincere and limited love. An empathetic educational process would bring wounded children closer to God and direct them to a better life.

Abstract

The Gospel of salvation must be conveyed to all people so that they believe and accept Jesus as the only savior. To carry out this mission, a contextual way of theology is needed, including using the culture of the prospective recipient of the Gospel. Within the Toraja community in the province of South Sulawesi, some still adhere to the Aluk To Dolo belief. They have a mythology about creation and humanity's fall into sin, similar to similar stories in the Bible. This research wants to know whether this mythology can be a medium to preach the Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ to Aluk To Dolo adherents. The research method used is a literature study. The data is taken from various literature; mainly the research results on the mythology of Aluk To Dolo. The research results obtained from a comparison between the Aluk To Dolo mythology and the Bible story about the creation and fall of humans show that the human intermediary with God in the Aluk To Dolo mythology failed to save humans, but Jesus succeeded. Therefore, Jesus is the only savior for humanity. Everyone who believes in Jesus will return to God. Thus, the Aluk To Dolo mythology about the creation and fall of humans into sin can be an effective medium for preaching the Gospel of salvation to Aluk To Dolo adherents.

Abstract

One of the duties of the church is to carry out deaconess, which is to provide services to people experiencing distress. However, the church tends only to carry out internal deaconess to its members. In Indonesia, most churches have a pluralistic social environment with different religious communities. The research intends to examine the possibility of cross-religious deaconess based on Karl Rahner's idea of universal ecclesiology. The research method used is a literature study. The data was taken by tracing Rahner's central concept of universal ecclesiology, especially the anonymous Christian idea, on secondary sources. The research results show that interfaith deaconess is possible because it manifests the mysterious existence of God's work of salvation. Faith in God is not a metaphysical-abstract hope but accurate in historical experience. Deaconess across religions also illustrates the presence of the Triune God, who is always in His relationship with humans. The Triune God is not isolated but is present in the actions of the church's faith in society.

Abstract

The church's economic development should be a concern of the church. PJM-PB Congregation Mandiri Protestant Nazareth Lonas does not yet have an entrepreneurial program to increase the congregation's finances, impacting the church's independence. This study aims to determine the opportunities and obstacles to procuring an entrepreneurship program at the PJM-PB Congregational Mandiri Protestant Nazareth Lonas. This research was conducted in two stages; first, the qualitative method was used to obtain in-depth information. Second is the quantitative method as a supporting method with data collection techniques using questionnaires and structured interviews. In this study, researchers also used a comparative study to compare the opportunities and obstacles of church entrepreneurship with control variables, theology, entrepreneurial knowledge, human resources, natural resources, availability of capital, and availability of working capital. The study results show that the PJM-PB of the Nazareth Lonas Protestant Independent Congregation already has enough opportunities to hold a church entrepreneurship program. This can be seen from the variables of theology, entrepreneurial knowledge, and availability of human and natural resources. Barriers exist in the variables of business capital and infrastructure. However, these obstacles will likely be overcome with the availability of opportunity variables.

Abstract

Worship is the central activity of the church, but many churches whose congregation members are less active in worship. Several studies have shown that the cell group approach can encourage church members to worship actively. The Banggai Protestant Independent Congregation (PJM-PB) of the Pondan Korampotan Congregation also faces the same problem, but until now, the cell group approach has not been used in ministry. This study examines the potency of the cell group approach in increasing the attendance of church members in worship at the Pondan Korampotan Congregation. The method used is qualitative, with interviews as a data collection technique. Data analysis uses reduction, display, and conclusion techniques. The number of informants involved was 13, including pastors, church boards and church members. The study results show that the cell group approach is very potential to be implemented in the Pondan Korampotan Congregation because all informants view this approach as essential and believe that if implemented in the congregation, it will encourage increased congregation member participation in worship. The reasons put forward to support this opinion include: 1) cell group makes it easier for God's servants in the congregation to reach all members, including members who are not active; 2) cell group provides space for all members to participate actively; 3) in the cell group, the relationship between members is intimate, mutually supportive, and sharing.
