Abstract

The aim of the research is to find out endophoric references in Mark Zuckerberg biography and the relationship between discourse analysis and pragmatic. The research used descriptive qualitative research design. The data obtained from Mark Zuckerberg biography written by the biography website. The data are analyzed using Halliday & Hasan’s theory (1976) of reference cohesion reference is one of the cohesive devices. The result shows that endophoric reference exists in Mark Zuckerberg biography endophoric. Endophoric consist of two types, the first is anaphoric and the second is cataphoric. In this research there are five type cohesive devices that are usually used in texts like substitution, references, ellipsis, lexical cohesion, and conjunctions. In the research found that cataphoric is dominant than anaphoric because the subject is located in the beginning of the sentences. Cohesive devices not only focused on lexical cohesion, but also focused on ellipsis and substitution and reference.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is an important part of the reading process. In learning English, students may face some difficulties in learning reading, even though they are students of Senior High School. Therefore the teacher should teach them by appropriate technique to solve their difficulties. This research was conducted to find out the effectiveness of using two stays two stray technique in teaching student’s reading comprehension. It was conducted by quantitative research design with pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design involving 32 of tenth-grade students of Senior High School in Cianjur. The instrument used in this research was tested (pretest-posttest) which given before and after treatment. The result of data analysis in this research shows the t score is 25.106, it is higher than t table with a degree of freedom (df) 31 and level of significant (2-tailed) at 5% (0.05) which has the value of 2.039. Because t score > t table  (25.106 > 2.039), then Ha is accepted. In other words, there is the effectiveness of using two stays two stray technique in teaching student’s reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the improvement of students' writing skills by using Discovery learning and the Snowball Throwing method. this study uses Quasi-Experimental by comparing two different variables with the stages of giving pre-test, treatment, and post-test and looking for the difference in value using the Gain Test. This research was conducted in class XI of SMK 4 Padalarang LPPM with a sample population of 60 students namely 30 students of class XI RPL 1 as control class and 30 students with discovery learning method and RPL 2 class as Experimental class with Snowball Throwing approach. From the results of this study conclusions are obtained  1). The ability to write students using the Snowball method is effective and better than using discovery learning. 2). There is a change in the value of writing narrative texts of students using the snowball method rather than discovery learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not students’ interest in watching music video and their listening ability have a significant correlation. The method used in this research was a quantitative research method. The population of the research is the first grade students of SMK Al-Hasyimiyah which is located on Jl. Hanjawar Pacet Cianjur. This research was conducted in March 2018 in the 2017/2018 academic year. And the researchers took TKJ class with consist 33 students for the sample out of the population. The data were collected by questionnaire and test, and then the data were analyzed using the correlation analysis. The result of the research showed that students interest in watching music video gave a positive contribution to students listening ability. It can be seen from the result of corrrelation coefficient between the two variables in this resesarch is 0.583. And the correlation between two variable was significant because sig (2-tailed or 0.000) was lower than 0.05. In other word that there was significant correlation between students interest in watching music video and their listening ability.

Abstract

Study of language skills in English is pretty important to increase students’ skill in study English. One of the most important skills is writing. It can make students share the ideas into written form in the text or paragraph with the right order of generic structure. The purposes of this study are to find out the students ability in writing descriptive text and to find out whether students writing descriptive are already well organized or not. The research method used qualitative research method. The researchers took 33 students as respondents. The data analysis took from the students’ descriptive text results. Based on the data analysis, the researchers found 15 or 45 % students created the descriptive text and 18 or 55 % students created the report text. It showed 10 or 30 % students created the paragraphs of descriptive text properly based on its generic structure and 5 or 15 % students could not apply it properly. It can be concluded that most of the students’ paragraphs are well organized. Meanwhile, the other students could not make it properly, because they still confused and could not distinguish the differences between descriptive text and report text.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to improve students’ reading comprehension through a scientific approach. The research was conducted at SMA Mathla’ul Anwar in the first semester. The researcher used the method of the research is qualitative research, a classroom action research. The research used three cycles. Any cycle exists in four steps. There are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the research were 32 students at XI IPA 1 of SMA Mathla’ul Anwar. The researcher collected the data using observation, interview, test, and discussion to collect data that need at the time of the study. It determined the extent of the increase students’ reading comprehension before and after the following scientific approach. most of them have low motivation in the learning activity. Students whose English are good enough have good motivation in the learning activity. Most of the students have low willingness to learn especially when they entered the noon hour lesson.The analysis of the research data showed that there was an increase in the average and percentage students’ score, from the score in cycle I am 65 or 37.5%, cycle II is 71 or 59%, cycle III is 80 or 100%. It can be said that scientific approach improved students’ reading comprehension at XI IPA 1 of SMA Mathla’ul Anwar in Academic 2018/2019.Keywords:  Students, Improving reading comprehension, Scientific approach.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate what types and what is mostly found of lexical cohesion in the news article. Written texts are different from spoken interaction. To make the readers know what the writers mean, the writers should compose a well formed of the text. Cohesion is an aspect of a text, which entails that the letter forms a unified whole, rather than unrelated sentences. Cohesion plays a special role in the creation of text. There are two main types of cohesion there are grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion consist of reference, ellipsis, substitution and conjunction, whereas lexical cohesion has two aspects, they are reiteration and collocation. Lexical cohesion refers to the way related words are chosen to link elements of a text. This study used qualitative research as the research method. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that there are six types of lexical cohesion and the types of lexical cohesion which is mostly used by the writer is repetition but this article is lack of antonym. And the use of lexical cohesion in writing a text can deliver the meaning of whole text itself for the readers easily and clearly.

Abstract

In everyday life we can’t be separated from rules or norms, which is a common practice that benchmarks behavior within a particular group of societies and territorial boundaries. The Sudanese are very understanding and understand the meaning of Pamali as the norm of life or the rules in their culture. The purpose of this research is to know the understanding of Pamali among adolescents who are considered as social norms of Sudanese society. This research consists of 90 respondents by using qualitative method and the data is taken through the result of questionnaire as instrument. Based on data of the researchconcludes that some teenagers know the meaning of Pamali as a social norm applied by their ancestors. but on the other hand they do not believe in Pamali even they are not afraid when they  violated Keywords:  Pamali, culture , social norm

Abstract

The central topics of pragmatics, this study is limited on applying deixis on speech Ridwan Kamil at the Asia Africa Conference (KAA). This research deals with the English deixis. The objectives of this study are to analyze type of deixis and to find out the most dominant type of deixis in “Ridwan Kamil’s speech  at Asia Africa Conference (KAA)” on April 24th 2015. This study was conducted by using qualitative approach. From the five type of deixis, in Ridwan Kamil’s speech found that there are three types of deixis, namely person deixis (7 data) time deixis (3 data), and the last is social deixis (1 data). Abstract

Sign intentionally produced in order to signify where these signs always originate from a sender. They are formed consciously by someone, based on specific conventions, and with the aim of communicating something to someone. Nowedays, many of the signs used in social media, especially in social media Instagram as one of the popular social media that is not only used for communication but also sometime be a place to share a moment using picture or video. The objective of this research is to find out the intent of sign in the picture that user Instagram share and also analyzed picture to find out the connotation. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach such the researchers analyses the visual signifier and concept of meanings as signified the data with analyzed based on C.Peirce's triadic model of sign which consist of representament, object and interpretant. Researchers use 8 pictures random taken from Instagram user. The result of this research is the researchers find 4 words from the text in the pictures that including to energetic interpretant with the dynamical interpretant process, and also find 4 words from the text in the pictures that including to emotional interpretant with the dynamical interpretant process.
