Abstract

The concept of learner autonomy has garnered significant attention from scholars, educators, policy makers, and researchers across various countries. However, In Indonesia, the body of research dedicated to learner autonomy is still growing, with specific attention needed to identify potential obstacles that might deter its promotion. This study, therefore, aims to delve into the socio-cultural challenges encountered by secondary school teachers when fostering learner autonomy. This investigation is crucial, as socio-cultural influences appear to be a significant barrier for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in Indonesia. The study adopted a qualitative descriptive research approach, utilizing a purposive sampling technique to select participants based on specific criteria. These included senior high school teachers with over five years of experience at their respective schools, who were also willing to participate in interviews. In total, six English teachers from different senior high schools within a single Indonesian province contributed to this study. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and the teachers' responses were quoted and interpreted in light of the data analysis and supporting theories from relevant literature. The findings revealed three primary socio-cultural barriers impeding the promotion of learner autonomy: (1) barriers due to language issues, (2) barriers related to a limited worldview, and (3) institutional barriers. This research implies that promoting learner autonomy in language learning requires adjustments in teaching strategies, curriculum design, and institutional policies. Research suggestions are also provided to further research to address the limitation of the current study.

Abstract

Abstract: The research deals with the archetype of supernatural power in Pararaton and Babad Giri Kedhaton. How are the supernatural power archetypes portrayed in Pararaton and Babad Giri Kedhaton? The theory of archetype, Pararaton, supernatural power, and a qualitative research design are applied to answer that research problem. The Morphology discussed focuses on the difference between Hindu and Islamic traditions. The finding shows that Pararaton and Babad Giri Kedathon show male-dominated figures. The archetype of male supernatural power in Pararaton and Babad Giri Kedhaton is portrayed as shining, disciplined, and a great achievement as a king. To sum up, the two stories reflect that the heroes (Propp’s idea of a hero) are male holy figures having supernatural power as miracles. Therefore, the fabula of stories has many similarities. However, both books have different traditions so the differences influence how stories are told as the suzhet.

Abstract

This study uses a corpus of short stories entitled Siapa Kirim Aku Bunga? by Eka Kurniawan, which contains issues of postcolonialism through mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity of the Si Gadis Penjual Bunga’s character, which then shows the existence of a discourse of resistance. This study aims to dismantle the strategy of resistance through mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity in the short story Siapa Kirim Aku Bunga? by Eka Kurniawan. This research is qualitative, using the hermeneutic method. The research begins with understanding the text, then interpreting it to show and explain the existence of mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity with descriptive methods. The approach used in this research is post-colonialism. The show that mimicry, ambivalence, and hybridity through European dress are a strategy in carrying out a discourse of resistance by the colonized to the colonialists. This resistance refers to the dark story of the Indonesian people regarding the disposal of indigenous people who were sent and exiled to Boven Digoel. Through the metaphor of flowers, this work depicts the deep sadness of that time.

Abstract

Translator is a writer. This is an essential understanding for “novice” translators, especially students in higher education that learn translation studies. Some cases (see Annisa, (2020), Nurlaila(2021), Aprianti(2021) show that students in the language department faced difficulty to conduct translation tasks. Therefore, students or novice translators have to conduct a writing practice that may enhance their translation skills. As translation is involved in a writing activity, students (novice translators) have to understand that text production ability is essential. In this case, the ability to write especially in the target language is necessary to ease them in constructing the meaning or idea of the source text in the target language. Their brain will think aloud to investigate what to say (the idea of source text), perform text structuring (finding a proper word to realize the idea of source text language), expression (construct the words regarding on target language linguistic aspect) and revision (to check the result of translation, figuring out the wrong thing that led to reducing the meaning of source text). Thus, it is hoped that the result of the translation task will be accurate, acceptable and readable.
