International Journal of Linguistics and Discourse Analytics (IJOLIDA) is a peer-reviewed academic journal of linguistics and discourse analytics published by Denpasar Institute. The journal publishes both articles and book reviews. It publishes two special issues a year. IJOLIDA encourages submissions that incorporate theories and methodologies from all traditions of linguistics and discourse analytics to explore any aspect of language and discourse. Areas of study at the intersection of linguistics and discourse analytics include, but are not limited to: applied linguistics, functional linguistics, text linguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, linguistic anthropology, ethnography of communication, narrative studies, social semiotics, literacy studies, language policy, language ideology, language teaching or language grammar.

Abstract

This article aims at analyzing the process occurred in translating words or phrases that contains speech level in Balinese into Indonesian and English. As we know, Balinese language recognized the use of speech level in communication that represents a respectful and polite attitude to the other person, whereas in Indonesian and English, the use of speech level is not too significant as in Balinese. These differences may cause difficulties in translation process because the translator has to maintain this element in the target language. The source of this study is the conversation in Balinese shadow puppet “Sidapaksa” translated by Natarina (2014) into Indonesian and English. This study used documentation methode in collecting the data, while the analysis was presented qualitatively and descriptively. The result showed that mostly there are loss of information in translating words or phrases which contain speech level meaning because Balinese used more variety of words that show the social status of the speakers. But between two target languages, Indonesian can preserved speech level more than its translation in English. It is because Balinese is closely similar with Indonesian (the same language family) than English.

Abstract

This paper addressed the debate on binary features [±voice] versus privative features [voice] and [spread glottis] as the phonological representation of laryngeal features in stop sounds across languages by studying the production of four-way stops (e.g. /b/, /bh/, /p/, and /ph/) in Marathi. This study was aimed at providing accurate data on voicing and aspiration in Marathi stops in utterance-initial and intervocalic positions, as well as investigating how voicing and aspiration are influenced by place of articulation and male-female differences. Three male and three female native speakers of Marathi were recorded in an anechoic chamber at the University of Iowa, and their recordings were analyzed using Praat. The data showed robust presence of voicing and aspiration in the production of voiced aspirated stops, supporting the privative features theory since the binary features [±voice] alone cannot distinguish the four-way stop contrasts in Marathi. Furthermore, place of articulation was found to be significantly correlated with the length of voicing and aspiration, whereas male-female differences did not have a significant influence on voicing and aspiration of the Marathi stops.

Abstract

Quantum Learning is a trend of meaningful learning that allows the creation of a fun learning atmosphere. Motivation and students' engagement become a prime attraction for successful teaching and learning practices. Happiness in learning provides a positive impact on students’ peacefulness and builds up students’ creativity. The present study was conducted to attempt at improving linguistic competence through implementing quantum learning to EFL students triggered by the fact that the students have poor ability in linguistic competence. The results of the analysis of the questionnaire clearly showed that the students’ attitudes and motivation in learning linguistic competence through quantum learning were improved significantly. This study implies that quantum learning is an effective teaching model to improve the students’ linguistic competence, Therefore, the use of quantum learning should be carefully considered as an effort to optimally maximize students' engagement in language learning.

Abstract

Assessing is a process of giving score and evaluation of students’ learning achievement to provide the opportunity to plan further learning improvement to attain the learning standard determined by the curriculum. This study dealt with analyzing students’ writing ability to enhance their micro and macro writing. An ex-post facto research design was employed to establish reliable findings. The research instrument that was used to collect the data was in the form of a productive test. Students were assigned to construct a descriptive paragraph consisting of at least seven sentences. The result of this study showed that: there were 5% of students who achieved an excellent score in writing a descriptive paragraph, 37.5% of students attained good achievement, 30% of students attained sufficient achievement, 17.5% students obtained insufficient achievement, 10% students were in poor achievement. This finding suggests that there still many students found difficulty in writing unified and coherent paragraphs.

Abstract

Indonesia has been a member of the Asean Economy Community (AEC) since 2016 and by becoming a member of the MEA, Indonesia has turned into a strategic market in marketing foreign products both goods and services. With the existence of the AEC, a single market will be created in the ASEAN region. This single market will create a free flow of goods, services, and capital and investment trade. In addition to getting a lot of benefits from it, there are also many challenges faced, one of which is in terms of the readiness of its human resources. Lack of skills to communicate with foreigners is one thing that needs to be highlighted. The same thing happened to the golf caddy at New Kuta Golf Pecatu who still uses body language to communicate with international tourists. This research aims to identify the needs analysis of the caddies to develop their communicative competence to have meaningful communication with the guests. English for Caddy is a form of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), in which the results of this research can be used as a reference for subsequent research, namely syllabus planning and the development of teaching materials of ESP. There were 20 caddies as the informants to be involved. The data collection was done through observations, questionnaire and interview.

Abstract

Translation can be defined as a product and process. The product refers to the result of translation from the source language to the target language, while the process refers to the activity of translating the source language into the target language. Translation is needed in a growing community in the global era. In this era, the role of media plays significant part in every aspect of human life. Electronic media as one medium for delivering information has the responsibility to convey the latest information not only from within the country but also abroad and throughout the world. The information referred to is not only related to sharing news but also entertainment; one of them is film. Films from abroad (America and Britain) are imported into Indonesia for economic and social purposes.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the tradition of Egep Bine in the Lembata Flores community. The Egep Bine tradition is a healing ritual performed by a naran 'brother' to bine 'sister for the mistakes made. The Egep Bine ritual is carried out by naran unstressed pressure and coercion so that bine avoids the disasters of benete'catastrophe' as it is difficult to obtain the kenobek 'bloodline', the huhe beria 'is full of pain that is difficult to cure' and is struck by unnatural deaths. The Egep Bine rituals are guided by molan 'shamans' as mediators between humans and ancestors. The method used is consider and competent to give an overview of the traditions of the people of Lembata. The theory used is ecolinguistics which describes the use of language related to the natural environment. The Egep Bine tradition has a morphological form that shows a lexicon related to the natural environment and related to local wisdom such as the use of braha. In an ecolinguistic perspective, everything that is used comes from the natural environment which is used as material for recovery. Examples of braha 'cotton' symbol of purity. The values contained in the Egep Bine ritual are: the value of harmony, obedience, and kinship.

Abstract

Folklore is traditional oral stories that are passed down from one person to another for generations in society. Folklore contains local wisdom, noble characters, cultural heritage, and rich socio-linguistic features that should be preserved for society. Folklore as one of the teaching materials may improve students’ cultural and linguistic awareness as well as linguistic competence. The present study was conducted to attempt at improving speaking and socio-linguistic competence through implementing Balinese folklore in the English language classroom. This study was triggered by the fact that the students have low ability in speaking and socio-linguistic competence. The results of the analysis of the questionnaire clearly showed that the students’ attitudes and motivation in learning speaking through Balinese folklore were improved significantly. This study implies that Balinese folklore is an effective teaching model to improve the students’ speaking skills and socio-linguistic competence, Therefore, the use of Balinese folklore should be carefully considered as an effort to optimally maximize students' engagement in language learning.

Abstract

The current study attempts to describe the differences meaning of lexicon membawa in Bimanese. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data analyzed by implemented of Leech theory meaning. It divided into seven types of meaning: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic. Based on the data analysis by using collocative meaning show that fourteen lexicons membawa are used by Mbojo ethnic group in daily communication in different context. The lexicons of membawa include tewe [tewe], su’u [su’u], ce’i [ce’i], lemba [lemba], tundu [tundu], geo [geo], pompo [pompo], semba [semba], kapi [kapi], gendo [gendo], peso [peso], congge [congge], ngganta [ngganta], and kalei [kalei].

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a very important language skill to support our life in many aspects. In education sectors, reading comprehension is an ability for the students to continually develop their skills in various subjects. Consequently, assessment of students' reading comprehension is absolutely essential to be conducted to systematically collect information and making inferences about the ability of a student or the quality of the learning process. This study revealed that students' reading comprehension is at a sufficient level and students still experienced some challenges in reading comprehension. This study implies that more intensive reading comprehension activities should be carried out and better learning strategies should be employed by the teachers in teaching reading comprehension.
