Abstract

This research studies the position of Indonesia literature as a component of literature which can also be categorized as world literature. Due to the fact that Indonesian is sometimes underestimated because its identity as third world nation and this sometimes impacts the way of how foreign researchers value Indonesian’s intellectual products such as Indonesian literature, it is necessary to evaluate Indonesian position in world literature. This research is a qualitative study since it has conducted a library research and it has been completed through document analysis. This study uses Damrosch’s theory of world literature’s characteristics in order to check and to find out whether Indonesian literature can be categorized as world literature or not. Indonesian literary works that have been used as the objects of analysis for this study are Sangkuriang, Mahabharata, and literary works that have been written by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. At the end of this study, it has concluded that Indonesian literature fulfilled the three main characteristics of world literature that have been classified by Damrosch and is able to be categorized as world literature. This clearly demonstrates Indonesian clear position in world literature and also shows that Indonesian literature deserves to be categorized as world literature.

Abstract

In Japanese language teaching, either in Japan and outside Japan, the teachers are faced learners who have different cultures both in terms of mieru bunka (見える文化visible culture) and mienai bunka (見えない文化 invisible culture). As teachers who teach foreign languages ​​and learners who study foreign languages, both parties should not ignore culture that also appears in the learning process of foreign languages ​​(Yashiro, K & Sera, T., 2010). This paper will examine the use of zeikomi (税込 price include tax) and zeinuki (税抜price exclude tax) price label realia in terms Japanese-Indonesian intercultural understanding. The method which used in this paper is literary research. Some terms that appear in everyday life such as zeikomi (税込)、zeinuki (税抜き), B hin (B 品, B quality)、wake ari shouhin (分けあり商品 imperfect product) are used as vocabulary inputs in class activities. The term zeikomi, zeinuki, B hin and wake ari shouhin are examples of mienai bunka will provide intracutural understanding to learners. This paper shows that using realia can make classroom’s activities more interesting.

Abstract

Translating prepositions in, on and at is not an easy job for EFL students since the meanings relate to locating object, time, and degree. With regard to this point, this study aims at identifying strategies, methods, and procedures used by EFL students to translate preposition in, on and at. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are applied in this study. Think-Aloud Protocol data collecting technique carries out to identify student’s strategies, methods, and procedures in translating prepositions in, on and at. To do this, the data of student’s transcriptions and students’ translations obtained from three students were analyzed. The findings indicate that students use more than one strategies, methods and procedures.

Abstract

This sociolinguistic study was conducted in conjunction with a project on the development of a course syllabus and instructional materials for the teaching of Hiligaynon as mother tongue in Region VI Western Visayas, Philippines. A corpora of the first one thousand commonly used in Hiligaynon was developed through an adopted concordancing software. Derived from corpus linguistics, a corpora study is a descriptive method of studying language in context and is ideal for a functional-based analysis of language (Meyer, 2004). The words were culled from various genres in the local language. These were analyzed for meaning, part of speech, and level of usage in Hiligaynon discourse. The corpora, however, yielded codes borrowed from English. A semantic, syntactic, and functional analysis of the words led to the following categories: adapted words, convenient alternative words, words occurring in compound nouns, indigenized spelling, indigenized pronunciation, and clipped words. The results imply that a purist approach in teaching mother tongue will limit the learners’ acquisition of vocabulary words and skills in meaning-making. It is recommended that language teachers take an eclectic posturing that considers multi-modalities, translanguaging, authenticity, linguistic resourcing, and entextualization.

Abstract

BIPA is an abbreviation for Indonesian for Foreign Speakers. Precisely, Indonesian language skills learning programs, namely speaking, writing, reading, and listening to foreign speakers. In Japan, Indonesian is taught at universities, language schools and several high schools. In some universities Indonesian language can be learned as a second foreign language / language of choice after they learn English. In general, the material taught is only about language. However, there are several universities that have Indonesian Language Study Programs or Programs. The scope of teaching is broader. In addition to language, those who take the program can study the arts, culture, literature, religion, social, economics, and politics of Indonesia. Can I study Indonesian language in a department or study program that can be called BIPA? According to the author it is different from BIPA because BIPA is only limited to language learning. Indonesian (Malay) education in Japan began in the early 1900s in Tokyo. This article discusses the development of Indonesian language education in Japan from the past to the present.

Abstract

Incomplete sentence (ellipsis verbal) are often to be the problem in translating from Japanese into Indonesian. The purpose of this research is to explain the techniques to translate incomplete sentence to achive equivalence found in Japanese comics Naruto volumes 29, 30, and 31, and analyze the translation of incomplete sentence contained in Naruto comic from Japanese to Indonesian. The method of this research is descriptive and qualitative methods. Data source are the Japanese comic title Naruto by Masashi Kishimoto as the source text, and the translation comic in Indonesia as the target text. Thirteen incomplete sentence data on source text were analyze using appropriate translation techniques to achieve equvalence in target text. The result showed that incomplete sentence had board meanings. In addition, incomplete sentence cannot be translate literally, without looking at the context. Context is an important reference so the messagges from source text can be conveyed.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pemahaman tentang penerjemakan metafora dari bahasa Jepang ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dalam lirik lagu karangan AIMER. Lagu tersebut berjudul “I beg you” yang sudah diterjemahkan oleh penerjemah lepas bernama Natalia S. Laurita. Teori analisis komponen makna oleh Nida dijadikan alat untuk menganalisis data-data yang ditemukan, dibantu oleh teori metafora dan jenis-jenisnya oleh Newmark dan teknik penerjemahan oleh Moentaha. Dalam lagu “I beg you” terdapat tiga data penerjemahan metafora, dan setelah dianalisis ditemukan satu data yang tidak sepadan karena ketidaksesuaian referensi makna dari metafora. Di sisi lain, dua data yang lain menunjukan kesepadanan karena referensi makna yang relevan.

Abstract

Abtract This study investigates the translation of imagery in A Walk to Remember novel by Nicholas Sparks. This research aims to reveal the types of imagery and the translation techniques applied by the translator in translating imagery. This study uses qualitative method which focuses on describing and explaining the types of imagery found and the techniques applied to deal with imagery. This study uses the theories of imagery proposed by Perrine and Arp (1992), and translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The types of imagery mostly found are visual and organic imagery. The translation techniques used by the translator are adaptation, amplification, borrowing, established equivalent, literal translation, modulation, reduction and transposition. The result of the analysis shows that the techniques mostly used are established equivalent and literal translation. These two techniques are able to reproduce the message from SL to TL without any distortion in meaning. Keyword: visual imagery, organic imagery, translation techniques, established equivalent, literal translation. Abstrak Artikel ini menganalisis penerjemahan imajeri dalam novel A Walk to Remember karangan Nicholas Sparks. Tujuan penelitiannya adalah untuk mengungkapkan tipe-tipe imajeri dan teknik penerjemahan yang diterapkan oleh penerjemah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif agar dapat memerikan dengan baik tipe-tipe imajeri dan teknik penerjemahan yang diterapkan. Kajian ini memakai teori imajeri yang dipaparkan oleh Perrine dan Arp (1992), dan teori teknik penerjemahan yang disampaikan oleh Molina dan Albir (2002). Tipe-tipe imajeri yang banyak muncul dalam novel ini adalah visual dan organik imajeri. Teknik penerjemahan yang diterapkan oleh penerjemah adalah adaptasi, amplifikasi, peminjaman, padanan lazim, literal, modulasi, reduksi, dan transposisi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa teknik yang paling sering diterapkan adalah padanan lazim dan literal. Kedua teknik ini dapat mereproduksi pesan dari Bsu ke Bsa tanpa mendistorsi maknanya. Kata Kunci: imajeri visual, imajeri organik, teknik penerjemahan, padanan lazim, penerjemahan literal

Abstract

Writing in the media, a journalist can create his/her own framing, to be in favor or bias. The framing created will show the subject, the object, the victim or the perpetrator of a case from the point of view of the journalist. This study focuses on the position of subject, object, reader, and the ideology in PRI media and The Sydney Morning Herald media in the case of Baiq Nuril Makmun. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method and analyzed by using discourse analysis framework of Sara Mills. The result of data analysis in the articles show that Jokowi and Nuril are mostly put as subject. On the other side, Nuril is also written as object. Furthermore, based on reader position, the authors mostly use pronoun ‘he’, ‘her’, and ‘she‘. By using third person pronoun, readers are in the position of outsiders which can follow the storyline objectively from both of subject and object position. The ideology of the articles show that a leader uphold justice and solve injustice case that is received by Nuril because she becomes a victim two times, of the immoral action and the violation of Electronic Information and Transactions law.

Abstract

This study is about an analysis of the translation of taboo words in “Central Intelligence” movie. It is to shed the type of taboo words and the procedures applied to translate the taboo words. The theories used in this study are from Timothy Jay (1992) to classify the types of taboo words and a theory from Peter Newmark (1987) to analyze the translation procedures. The data are taken from the movie entitled Central Intelligence by choosing 20 data out of 65 data of taboo words. The result of the analysis shows that are seven translation procedures employed in the translation of taboo word. They are cultural equivalent (seven data), reduction (four data), functional equivalent (three data), paraphrase (three data), naturalization, through translation and literal translation (one data each). For the types of the taboo words, the result shows that there are eight types of taboo words of the 20 selected data. They are insult and slurs (four data), profanity (one data), taboo (two data), epithets (three data), slang (four data), scatology (one data), vulgarity (three data) and cursing (two data) of ten types proposed by Timothy Jay. From this study, it is concluded that the taboo words from the SL cannot always be translated into the taboo words in the TL because of the cultural differences.
