Abstract

The agricultural sector occupies a strategic position compared with other sectors. It is evident from its role in employment and contribution to gross domestic product. Tiwul has high economic value because of its relatively high nutrient content. Therefore, the advantage of Tiwul as a substitute for rice can be socialized (Subahar, 2004). The purpose of this study was to analyze strategy of marketing and instant Tiwul added value development in Wonosari District, Pekalongan, of East Lampung regency. The method used in this research was SWOT analysis and added value analysis. Respondents were selected intentionally (purposive) in Wonosari Pekalongan District of East Lampung regency with a sample of 20 respondents composed of 10 producers and 10 traders in addition to direcly observe the added value of instant Tiwul by conducting interviews with KWT Tani home industry. The results of this study indicated that the strategies used to improve the marketing of instant Tiwul in Wonosari District of East Lampung regency Pekalongan showed coordinates of (0.34 ; -0.50) in which the coordinates entered quadrant II, that although facing a variety of threats, the company still has iternal strength. The strategy that should be applied is to take advantage of long-term opportunities by way of diversification strategy (product / market). Instant Tiwul marketing in Wonosari District of Pekalongan has the strength in term of Tiwul production quality and increasing amount of production, which can be used to counter the threat. Added value for producers of instant Tiwul per production in East Lampung district is Rp 9450.00. Keyword: Strategy, Development and Marketing, Instant Tiwul, Added Value

Abstract

Plantation sub-sector is one of the agricultural sector mainstays of the foreign exchange and source of household farmers’ income. Plantation development is intended to make it more efficient, productive and competitive in order to increase the income of coffee farmers and their families. The main problem is the poverty of coffee farmers. Coffee plantations owned by coffee farmers in Pati are still dominated by small-scale enterprises, technologically simple, and low income. With low capital conditions, to help increase production and income of coffee farmers, loans are channeled through savings and loan program by Sido Makmur farmer group as an economic empowerment program for coffee farmer households. The aim of this research was to analyze the impact of the loans from Sido Makmur farmer groups toward household economy of coffee farmers. The study was conducted in coffee plantations in Klakahkasihan Village, Gembong, Pati. Cross - section data from Sido Makmur farmer group in Klakahkasihan village were collected directly from 52 respondents; they were 32 farmers who took the loans and 20 farmers who did not. The method used to analyze the data is simultaneous equation model. The results showed that loan has a negative impact on coffee production. It means that less amount of loan taken will improve coffee production. However, the loan has a positive impact on the non - food household consumption, meaning that greater loan taken will increase the household consumption of non – food goods. It can be concluded that this loan failed to help increase the production of coffee, because coffee farmers used it for the household consumption of non – food goods. Keywords: loan, household economy, coffee plantanation, Sido Makmur farmer group, Pati.

Abstract

Rice is the staple food of Indonesian society. The national rice production capability depends not only on the technical and economic aspects of production but also on the environmental carrying capacity, especially the availability of adequate rainfall and climate. The cyclical changes of extreme climate that occur affect the performance of national rice production. This study aims to determine the impact of extreme climate on national rice production. The research method used linear regression with El Nino (D1) and La Nina (D2) as extreme dummy extreme free variable and national rice production as its bound factor. The data used are based on BPS Indonesia with the duration of 1980-2011. The analysis shows that the presence of cyclically extreme climate has a significant effect on national rice production. Climate change has a negative and positive impact on rice production. El-Nino has a negative impact, while La Nina is the opposite. The difference in the size of the impact of climate change can be seen from the slope difference in the variable coefficient. Key words: climate changing, El-Nino, La-Nina, production, rice

Abstract

Mentik Wangi, one of the local rice varieties, is highly favored by rice farmers in Central Java. Marketers and consumers highly accept Mentik Wangi with its elliptical seeds because it has delicious taste and aroma. Besides having delicious taste, the variety is resistant to blast disease in various locations, whether planted in lowland or upland. In endemic blast disease areas, Mentik Wangi variety showed resistance to blast disease with low disease intensity, although the other varieties in these places showed quite high disease intensity. Rice blast disease is a disease that damages the rice not only on dry land, but also on rainfed and irrigation lands. At a high level of disease intensity, blast disease can cause yield losses of up to 100%. Planting resistant rice variety to prevent damage due to blast disease is one of the methods to blast disease control which is effective, inexpensive, and safe for the environment. However, control of blast disease with one component such as planting resistant rice is estimated to be ineffective in the long term, because the pathogen causes the blast disease to be able to adapt to the rice variety to form a new race that is more virulent. A rice variety that is originally resistant will gradually become susceptible to the new pathogen race. When the rice varieties which are resistant to blast disease is controlled by a single gene (monogenic resistant), the resistance of these varieties within 2-4 planting seasons will be broken by a new pathogenic race. Mentik Wangi that shows resistance to blast disease in various rice planting regions is expected to have some of the resistance genes, so that it can be used as a durable resistant variety. Keywords: Rice, Mentik Wangi, resistance, blast
