Abstract

This research was aimed to identify the social actors represented in the press statement of the President of Indonesia in the issue of covid-19 pandemic using two analytical models of Halliday's  transitivity  model  (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) and Van  Leeuwen’s (1996)  framework  applied to analyze the clauses were counted and analyzed critically through public discursive models. The research data were obtained from two news published by Setkab.go,id  (Secretary of cabinets).. The results showed show the positive portrayal or inclination of the press statement towards one social actor and it also portrays the ideology or stance of the president shown inclination towards as  a current ruler of government at time of data collection and his influence on Setkab.go.id. he showed that actor in material process represented in the role allocation of government was aimed to show the action of the Indonesian President toward the issue of the covid-19 pandemics.Keywords: social actors, Transitivity and President’s Press Statement

Abstract

This research aims to (1) describe the influence of video blogging implementation to improve English speaking skill of eleventh grade students in SMK (Vocational High School) Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta for Academic Year 2019/2020, (2) describe the influence of video blogging implementation to improve English learning motivation of eleventh grade students in SMK (Vocational High School)  Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta for Academic Year 2019/2020, and (3) describe the relation of English learning motivation and English speaking skill using video blogging.    This research applies descriptive qualitative to present the data which are collected with documentation. The subject of this research is the eleventh grade students in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta for Academic Year 2019/2020 selected with purposive sampling.  The data are video and questionnaire from the eleventh grade students in SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta for Academic Year 2019/2020. From the assessment aspects of English speaking, the highest number of students take the score 4 with 38% students in grammar, 32 % students in vocabularies, 30% students in fluency, and 29% students in comprehension. Meanwhile, in pronunciation aspect, 33% students as the highest percentage acquires score 3. From these percentages, it shows that the implementation of video blogging is successful to increase the English speaking skill for eleventh grade students of SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta. From the English learning motivation questionnaires, 35% students strongly agree and 40% students agree showing the positive influence of video blogging as the media to learn English speaking for eleventh grade students of SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta in academic year 2019/2020. From the relation of English learning motivation and speaking skill, the high motivation of students to learn English produces the high score of English speaking skill for eleventh grade students of SMK Analis Kesehatan Nasional Surakarta in academic year 2019/2020.

Abstract

This study explores ideology inside president Barack Obama’s inaugiral speech. This paper used descriptive – qualitative method to find ideology through attitudinal analysis of Martina and white (2005). The data was obtained from the transcription of Barack Obama’s inaugural speech as the data.  The findings are thirty effect, thirty-o judgments, and six appreciations. The analysis of data consists of the positive and negative attitude of study reveal that three sub-systems of language appraisal namely are (a). Affect found 30 data (44,7%) consist of positive 18 data, negative 12 data, (b). Judgment found 33 data (47,2%) consist of positive 31 data, negative 2 data, (c). Appreciation found 6 data (9,1%) consist of positive 6 data, negative 0 data and also the researcher found that President Barack Obama uses more Positive Judgmental category most frequently used by Obama and some of Barack Obama's statements which indicate he has views or ideologies such as 1) protectionism and 2) anti-racism. The ideological stance inside the speech of Obama is to maintain a close relationship with the public and protection of American people in order to get people’s sympathy.Keywords: Attitudinal analysis, Ideology, Inaugural Speech, and President Obama

Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelago country with approximately 17.000 islands in one nation. Many cities have been supported with sufficient and appropriate ICT facilities for education but still many schools in rural area are still far from ideal condition. This research aims at finding out the barriers experience by English GGD as teachers that directly deal with this condition in using ICT for teaching English and the strategies they use to face the barriers. By employing qualitative descriptive study, 17 GGD English teachers were involved. Finding showed that infrastructure and facilities are major barriers face by teachers in implementing ICT on their teaching. To keep using ICT in teaching they take some strategies such as use their own personal ICT tools, prepare material when they find electricity or internet connection, utilize English GGD teacher group to share teaching material, use energy saving application in their computer, and borrow ICT tools from the closest school. Researcher hope that this study can be further used by our government, school, and stakeholder to provide solutions to its obstacles in implementing ICT for English teaching in remote and rural area.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the use of International Phonetic Transcription (IPA) in teaching pronunciation. IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet), which was established in 1886 by a group of European phoneticians, is used as the standard of doing phonemic transcript. The term ‘Phonetic Transcription’ in this research refers to the set of symbols used to characterize the set of distinctive sounds of English. The subjects of the research were one lecturer of pronunciation subject and 39 students of the first semester at English Department Veteran Bangun Nusantara University Sukoharjo in 2017/ 2018 academic year. The researcher collected data by using interview, observation, questionnaire, and documentation. All data of the research was taken during teaching and learning process in pronunciation class. The result of the study showed that the use of IPA by combining it using various teaching method can help the students in learning pronunciation. Lecturer and most of the students think that IPA is needed and very beneficial in learning pronunciation.

Abstract

AbstractCollege students in higher levels of semester from non English department require advanced stage of learning English method. Therefore, this research takes English debating as advanced English learning method for non English Department students. Aims of this research are (1) to present the students’ score of English speaking skill in debating performance; and (2) to explain the effectiveness of debating method in teaching advanced English speaking based on lecturer’s and college students’ point of view. This research applies qualitative descriptive to present statistical data form and purposive sampling technique for selecting the respondents. This research took 30 students of fifth grade at STMIK Sinar Nusantara Surakarta in academic year 2018/2019. In this research, 5% students scored 50, 18 % students scored 60, 42% students scored 70, and 32% students scored 80 for the fluency aspect. From the accuracy aspect, 12% scored 50, 25% students scored 60, 35% students scored 70, and 28% students scored 80. From the pronunciation aspect, 10% students scored 50, 22% students scored 60, and 38% students scored 70, and 30% students scored 80. From the intonation aspect, 10% students scored 50, 30% students scored 60, 40% students scored 70, and 20 % students scored 80. Abstract

Malay people are very well known of their local wisdom that expresses a message of Malay life condition, especially in Kepulauan Riau. One of the local tradition is finding gonggong by using frying oil. This tradition is one way to communicate and socialize the culture of Malay. The purpose of this research are to find out the function of the rite and to know the meaning of finding gonggong. This tradition is almost disappearing because many people do not practice this ritual to the next generation so that the researcher tried to identify it by interviewing the informant and joining the activity directly. By doing this activity, there are some function and meaning of finding gonggong which are used to preserved the culture of Malay especially in Bintan Island.

Abstract

Editorial texts provide opinions to influence publics toward actual issues in society. The opinions contain critics served in suitable dictions and argumentations to access wider comprehension toward reality. This research aims to investigate frequency of modal auxiliary verbs in Tempo editorial and the meaning of the frequency. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is collected from online Tempo editorial text with the similar national issue. The researcher only chooses 9 texts in November 2019. Abstract

This research aims to identify the linguistics unit used in intentional English typography errors, whether in the forms of word, phrase, clause or sentence. This research also has purpose to describe the types of intentional English typography errors, whether in the forms of omission,addition, substitution, or transposition. This research was a kind of qualitative design that tried to describe the linguistic units andforms of intentional English typography errors on facebook. Data of this research were Englishwords containing intentional typography errors used by the researchers’ friends on facebook in writing their status or comments. The data were got from the source of facebook in which data were collected through an observation toward English typography errors on status or commentson friends’ facebook accounts. The data then, were documented through facilities of print screen (capturing by computer) or screenshoot (capturing by phone cellular). Next, the collected data were analyzed into three steps, namely reduction, display, and verification. To check the data validity, this research applied researcher triangulation.This research resulted in collecting 93 data. The linguistic units consisted of 88 words, 1 phrase, and 4 clauses. The words involved 51 nouns, 8 adjectives, 13 verbs, 3 adverbs, and 13 greeting words. Then the linguistic units could be clasified in 65 substitution that can be categorized into 16 letter substitution and 49 sound substitution. There were also data belonging to 5 addition,11 ommission, and 1 transposition. It was also found combined-forms, namely 6 substitution – addition, 3 substitution – ommission, and 2 addition – ommission.

Abstract

  In the global era, EFL learners must master writing skill in order to communicate and covey their message. Project based learning is used to motivate them to be independent learner. It is expected that students will engage in writing process. The purpose is to investigate whether project based learning can improve the students’ writing ability. It was experimental research to compare between experimental and control group. The samples were 60 students of junior high school.  The instrument is writing test. The data was analysed using SPSS. The result shows that the mean score of control class in post-test is 64.60 (SD = 10.87420) and the mean score of experimental class is 84.83 (SD = 10.19494). It means the p value is .00 or less than 0.05. It indicates that there is significant difference on students’ writing skill between experimental group and control group. The results of post-test in experimental class are higher than the control class. It also supported by Eta Squared value 0.48 or classified as large effect. It means that the use of project based learning gave positive effect towards students’ writing skill. It is recommended to use project based learning to improve the English skills. Keywords : Writing, Project Based Learning, Descriptive Text, and Mini Magazine
