Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of shift in the translation of the book “The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down” by Haemin Sunim. The qualitative method was employed in this study. The data was collected through document analysis. Following the data collection procedure, the data were categorized and analyzed using the theories proposed by Catford (1965) and Machali (2009). The result shows that there are six types of shifts found in the translation of the book. They are level shift, structure shift, class shift, unit shift, intra-system shift, and meaning shift. Unit shift was the most prevalent translation shift, followed by class shift. There are cases of obligatory shifts due to different linguistic systems of the source language and the target language. In such contexts, the shifts are necessary to achieve accuracy and acceptability in the target language. In addition, there are also optional shifts due to the translator’s preference or different cultural backgrounds. It is applied to increase the readability in the target language.

Abstract

This study was a descriptive analysis that had a purpose to describe the application of suggestopedia in English learning in early childhood students (PAUD) through gobag sodor game. The data were taken through interview to English teachers of Ahmad Dahlan Kindergaten Surakarta and observation toward the process of English learning using gobag sodor. They were then analyzed using Milles and Huberman's interactive data analysis technique. The results of this study showed that the application of gobag sodor in English learning in Ahmad Dahlan Kindergarten was in line with the suggestology or suggestopedia method in which it eradicated the feelings of fear of making mistakes, fear of being incompetence, and fear of something new or unfamiliar that made the students got rilex and happy in learning foreign language such as English. It was considered beneficial because it involved the physical, psychological and knowledge aspects of the students and teachers. Then,  it should be the disadvantages of teaching English using the Gobak Sodor game are pedagogic skills and the teacher's special attention to early childhood in preparing Gobak Sodor teaching and learning activities.

Abstract

The online environment has been transformed all educational contexts of Higher Education in Indonesia. This situation occurred because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The constructivism notion became undoubtful to be implemented in English pedagogy online Moodle environment. Nonetheless, there are a few investigations to the capabilities adopt and accept in Moodle system and specification feature. The study used a qualitative research approach ethnographic case study method to investigate an issue and get a thorough knowledge of constructivist philosophy in Moodle. The research focuses on 43 English lecturers in Higher Education in south Jakarta who are also transitioning to online instruction. A constructivist Moodle-based online environment was established using an electronic open-ended questionnaire and structured interview. The thematic analysis found the characterization of constructivism theory implements in Moodle-based. It included multiple resources material, engaging language learners’ experience, utilizing learners’ feedback, encouraging conversation, enhancing learners’ cognitive process, initiating learners’ autonomy environment, providing data and supplementary resources, and facilitating written interaction. The constructivism philosophy had been in integrating sufficiently in teaching English Moodle-based. The Resources and Activities had supported its features inside the system

Abstract

The analysis of lexical bundles have done by everal studies from various genres and registers. However, the majority of the studies of lexical bundles in academic discourses which wrote by Indonesia were only focused on the level of expertises and English proficiencies. Therefore, one of the linguistic features that could be a characteristic marker in academic writing which wrote by L2 English writers, including Indonesian, is through the identification of lexical bundes. In addition, to fill this need in revealing the characteristics of research articles which wrote by Indonesian writers, the present study identifies lexical bundles used in academic writing focusing on applied linguistics. By using corpus-based analysis, this study takes a wider analysis than previous work. Structural classification by Biber et al., (2004) and functional taxonomy approach by Hyland (2008a) were applied. The results reveal that 1) Indonesian writer has advanced writing in academic text because they use various structure of lexical bundles 2) the use of noun phrase category dominate the text 3) the verb phrase category was the second most highly used in the text. These results show that Indonesian writer was more varied in the way they express their logical view in their research articles, especially on applied linguistics.

Abstract

The phenomenon of English as Lingua Franca (ELF) in Indonesia's multilingual pedagogical context is fascinating to study because the linguistic ecology in Indonesia is multilingual and multicultural. ELF reflects the spirit of learning open to various linguistic variations and focuses on the ability to communicate in diverse sociocultural contexts. The ideology of ELF in English Language Teaching (ELT) can be seen from the openness to use various variations of English outside of the native to be applied in the classroom to build cross-cultural communication competence. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of English learners (English Department) towards ELF and to find its relevance for future learning development. This research is quantitative-qualitative (Mixed-Method) with 130 English department student respondents from several campuses in Indonesia. Triangulation was carried out with seven students with different specializations (Linguistics, Literature, translation, and teaching). This research clearly shows the rejection of ELF in Indonesia's learning context and emphasizes the influence of native speakerism ideology. Even so, it is hoped that this research can still be developed in other studies in the future because multilingual pedagogical contexts are very diverse and can be seen from various perspectives.

Abstract

As songs are a means of conveying a message; thus, it is important to understand the lyrics of a song correctly. Irony is one way to embed a hidden message in a song. This study aims to investigate the irony contained in four songs: Welcome to Paradise, Welcome to My Life, Jesus of Suburbia, and Won’t be Home for Christmas. It also aims to examine what personal life struggle is shown in the irony contained. The findings show that three out of four songs examined represent the song writers’ personal life struggle related to childhood trauma. It is suggested that future studies do triangulation to this study to confirm the accuracy of the interpretation drawn.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the responses of teachers and students toward teaching and learning, the challenges that students face when learning writing, and the challenges that teachers face when teaching students through the writing process. This research used descriptive qualitative research to describe or explain systematically and accurately events. The research participants were conducted eleventh-grade students in SMK PGRI 2 Karawang, consisting of 30 students. The instruments of this research are an observation sheet, questionnaire, interviews, and tests. The results showed that the research found three findings. First, the teachers' responses could help students be more active, communicative, effective, and efficient. Second, the questionnaire results showed that most students positively responded to learning to write analytical exposition texts using YouTube as a medium because it made it easier for them to understand the subject matter. Third, this research can be employed as a reference by another researchers conducting further research on senior high school writing instruction for analytical exposition texts.

Abstract

Syntactic tree diagrams are used to help students recognize and analyze sentence structure. This study aims to discover students' difficulties in constructing syntactic tree diagrams of simple sentences. The descriptive qualitative approach was implemented with six English Department students participating as research participants. The data was gathered using interviews as the primary instrument and tests as a secondary instrument. The findings of this study show that students have six problems when constructing the syntactic tree diagram: determining phrase structure rules, placing words and phrases, determining word classes, drawing the diagram of long sentences, drawing arrows on the syntactic tree diagram, and identifying sentences with ambiguous meaning. Furthermore, some factors, such as insufficient knowledge of tree diagrams, the classroom environment, and a lack of confidence, contribute to students' difficulties in drawing the syntactic tree diagram of simple sentences. In light of the findings of this study, it is proposed that students practice constructing the syntactic tree diagram. Furthermore, lecturers are expected to give students more practice constructing syntactic tree diagrams in order to improve their ability to analyze sentence structure.

Abstract

The ability of writing narrative text is one of the skills that have to be mastered by students because writing is one of four basic skills in English. This research aims to identify students’ response on developing writing narrative text material using genre-based approach. The method of this research used research and development with the instruments – questionnaire and interview. Then the subject of the research is seventh grade students in one of junior high school in Cimahi. The result of this research is students’ responses towards the material during a field test were categorized as very good with some notes to point out: the product assists students to learn to write descriptive text; the design and graphics of the product are visually appealing; and the product has met the students' own criteria for a good material. On the other hand, based on their own experience of using the product, they had obstacles in understanding the material. Thus, it was considered in revising the product to simplify the language and task instruction.
