Abstract

This study aimed to explore teaching techniques that would reinforce academic achievement in Mathematics of Grade 2 pupils in Camp Evangelista Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines for school year 2020-2021. Asynchronous and Synchronous teaching techniques were employed in the class. The instruments used in the study were the School Learning Modules (SLMs) crafted and provided by the Department of Education, the video lessons patterned from the SLMs, the First and Second Quarter grades that represent their achievements in Mathematics, and the Reflection papers submitted by the pupils every grading period for feedbacking. The study was quantitative in nature and data gathered were analyzed using frequency, percentage, and paired sample t-test. Findings revealed that there was a significant difference in the academic achievement of the pupils in Mathematics after exposure to Synchronous and Asynchronous learning as evident in the Second Grading grades. It was disclosed that the intervention employed to reinforce pupils’ achievement in Mathematics is effective in this new normal learning. The researchers recommend that teachers may use this teaching technique to reinforce achievement particularly in Mathematics.

Abstract

Student organizations are very essentials in developing basic qualities of students and share interests, talents, and potential in extracurricular activities in the organizations. In Indonesia, student organizations play an important role of developing the student potential. The purpose of this article therefore is to review, describe, and explore the benefits of student organizations. Data were collected from eight Student Executive Board (BEM) in eight different campuses located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The phenomenological approach is carried out to uncover the usefulness of student organizations. In general, this article establishes that student organizations support the mastery of citizenship skills. The results show that there are 5 benefits students gain, including (1) Increasing civic awareness, (2) Increasing civic engagement, (3) enhanced the level of professionalism, (4) Instilling creativity, and (5) improved critical thinking. This article concludes that there is a need to carry out activities related to the management of skills in the planning work programs of the Student Executive Board (BEM), participating in scientific meetings, seminars, conferences, or training. This leads to a harmonious work atmosphere and wise decision making.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to analyze the effect of the work environment on the performance of Geography teachers at the state senior high schools in Lumajang Regency, investigate the effect of the fulfillment of occupational needs on the performance of Geography teachers, and analyze the influence of the work environment and the fulfillment of occupational needs on the performance of Geography Teachers. This research deployed quantitative research, coupled with correlational analysis to examine the cause-effect relationship between the dependent and independent variables. Research results point out that the teacher's work environment affects their performance by 30.25%. The fulfillment of occupational needs poses an effect on teachers’ performance by 26.41%. This means that greater fulfillment of occupational needs results in increased teacher performance. Finally, the work environment and the fulfillment of occupational needs concurrently pose a positive effect on the teacher’s performance. The coefficient of simultaneous determination (R2) is 46.9%.

Abstract

The urgent need to respond to the Covid crisis has provided the impetus for the implementation of modular distance learning in the Philippines. Hence, this study is one of the very few studies which sought to investigate the modular distance learning in the country, particularly the challenges it brought to the English language learners. Also, this present research aimed to determine the coping mechanisms of students, relevant to the challenges raised. The participants of the study were senior high school students, two males andsixfemales, who were purposely selected to fit into the inclusion criteria. Descriptive qualitative research design was employed and individual in-depth interviews were conducted to gather the data. The responses were transcribed, translated, and analyzed through thematic analysis. With regards the challenges, these themes were created: absence of teacher’s instruction, struggles of self-learning, poor picture quality, limited contents of the module, insufficient allotted time, failure of teachers to respond to inquiries, unstable and limited access to internet, students lack of vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, and less opportunity for correction. The paper ends with the discussion on how the students addressed the challenges of modular distance learning which was also subdivided into themes.

Abstract

The spread of the Coronavirus pandemic had affected every sector in our community including the sector of education. Educational institutions all over the world were forced to temporarily close. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuously arising yet learners should continue to learn. Thus, the Department of Education together with other educational institutions in the Philippines decided to devise a learning continuity plan. The authorities and the stakeholders decided to utilize distance learning as an alternative to face-to-face classes. Specifically, public elementary and secondary schools used distance modular learning. The modules used in modular distance learning. Hence, this qualitative research study utilized the thematic analysis method to unveil the challenges and coping mechanisms of English language teachers in developing the modules. This study primarily aimed to present the challenges encountered by inexperienced English language teachers in developing the materials for the modular learning of English. Moreover, the coping mechanisms of the English language teachers against the challenges they faced while developing the modules are discussed herein.

Abstract

The admission of non-STEM graduates to engineering programs creates an opportunity to determine if the Senior High School strand does really dictate the performance of students. This study administered the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE) to the first-year engineering students to determine if STEM graduates perform better than non-STEM graduates. The FMCE was administered to six hundred-seven (n = 607) first year engineering students of a state-run university in the Philippines, school year 2019-2020 and 2020-2021. The results reveal that there is no significant difference between the mean scores obtained by the STEM and non-STEM graduates (p = 0.912) in the FMCE. It was noted that the students who graduated from private and public high schools have similar performance (p = 0.242). Nevertheless, there is an urban-rural gap in performance among the respondents, where students who graduated from schools in cities have better performance than those who graduated from rural schools (p = 0.019). Finally, in the field dominated by male, the results suggest that female students are at par with male student students (p = 0.123) and both have statistically the same level of confidence with their answers (p = 0.176).
