Abstract

Psychiatric disorders can be found pre-existing in people who seek plastic surgery or due to unsatisfied results. This literature review aimed to describe the screening of psychiatric disorders in plastic surgery patients. Using a preoperative assessment tool to identify patients with underlying psychiatric issues, inappropriate motivations, or unrealistic expectations, as well as to provide a reason for psychological referral, may help avoid such situations. Such a tool would not replace formal in-depth assessment but would alert the medical team of needing further evaluation and possible psychological consultation. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is under-detected in patients presenting for cosmetic surgery, and patients with BDD are highly likely to seek cosmetic surgery. Valid and valuable screening and diagnostic instruments for BDD are available. A simple screening questionnaire (BDDQ) should be used, followed by administration of the BDD SCID for a fraction of patients with a BDDQ-positive screen result to be valuable tools to identify these patients. In conclusion, there was variable psychiatric screenings prior plastic procedure. Some adaptational screening methods will help if there is no proper guideline in the country.

Abstract

Traditional medicine uses various phytochemicals for wound healing, supplying enhanced healing processes via anti-inflammatory or antioxidant activity. This literature review aimed to describe herbal medicine for burn injuries. The main stages of the recovery process for burned skin include the migration of blood cells from deep within the burn wound, the promotion of local inflammation, the removal of cellular debris and pathogens, the proliferation of connective tissue and extracellular matrix, the neovascular network (angiogenesis) and tissue remodeling. Therefore, the ideal medicine for burn patients should have excellent wound healing potential and show positive effects at different stages of wound repair. The antioxidant activity is a good option for treating burns. Topical antimicrobial therapy is one of the most essential methods of burn wound care. The ideal antibacterial agent for wound infection prevention and control should directly kill pathogens and reduce local inflammation and tissue destruction. Therefore, herbal products can be used successfully to treat wounds. In conclusion, herbal medicine is recommended to conduct advanced clinical and pharmaceutical research to produce new natural medicines for treating burn wounds.

Abstract

Dyslipidemia is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke. This condition can be caused by genetic factors, unhealthy lifestyles (such as unhealthy food, lack of exercise, smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption), as well as some medical conditions, such as diabetes and hypothyroidism Syzygium polyanthum or also called Indonesian bay leaf is a tropical plant that usually grows in Southeast Asia. This literature review aimed to describe the benefits of bay leaves as adjuvant therapy in dyslipidemia. Apart from being used as a spice in cooking, Syzygium polyanthum is also known to have several health benefits. These leaves contain compounds such as eugenol, tannins, and flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Several studies show that bay leaves can help lower blood sugar levels, improve heart health, and strengthen the immune system. In conclusion, bay leaf or Syzygium polyanthum has various kinds of compounds, such as flavonoids, eugenol, and tannins which are useful in lowering blood cholesterol. Its use as a therapy for dyslipidemia requires further study.

Abstract

Pharmacogenetics plays an essential role in genetic variations, which are responsible for causing a variable drug response and include the genetic polymorphism of drug transporters, drug-metabolizing enzymes, and drug receptors. This literature review aimed to describe pharmacogenetics in anesthesia drugs. Human gene-disease studies fall into two general classes; linkage studies and association studies, based on the nature of the inheritance pattern. Linkage studies are used in Mendelian disease, often in families with a high prevalence of a single disease observed early in life, in whom multigenerational trees of inheritance of disease can be traced. In conclusion, pharmacogenetics is in the initial stage of clinical practice. Its contribution to new drug development will likely become a reality. Common polymorphisms in drug targets dictate that DNA sequence variations will be considered in the genomic screening processes for new drug development. This will provide new insights for developing medications that target critical pathways in disease pathogenesis and medications that can be used to prevent diseases in individuals genetically predisposed to them.

Abstract

The incidence of COVID-19 in pregnant women varies by geographic region and population. However, pregnant women may be at an increased risk of COVID-19 infection compared to non-pregnant women. Several risk factors have been identified for severe COVID-19 illness in pregnant women, including maternal age, obesity, chronic medical conditions, ethnicity, gestational age, and multiple pregnancies. Screening and testing for COVID-19 in pregnant women is essential to prevent transmission and ensure appropriate management. Pregnant women should be screened for symptoms at each prenatal visit, and those with symptoms or high-risk exposures should be tested using a PCR-based assay. Repeat testing may be necessary in certain situations, and universal testing may be implemented in some healthcare facilities. Antibody testing is not currently recommended for diagnosis or management of pregnant women. The delivery management of pregnant women with COVID-19 should be individualized based on the severity of the illness, gestational age, and fetal status. The neonatal management of infants born to mothers with COVID-19 should focus on the prevention of transmission and optimization of neonatal outcomes. Neonates should be evaluated for COVID-19 using a PCR-based assay, and respiratory support should be provided.

Abstract

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is an enzyme found in plasma and many other parts of the body. It is enzyme that hydrolyses drugs containing ester bonds such as drugs acting at the neuromuscular junction (succinylcholine) and local anaesthetics (procaine). Examination of the gene for mutations or polymorphisms causing the observed biochemical phenotypes has isolated those responsible for all the most widely known variants. The molecular bases of several genetic variants of BChE have been reported, such as the Atypical variant, fluoride-resistant variant, silent variant, K variant, J variant and C5 variant. In general, BChE polymorphisms have been shown to produce enzymes with varying levels of catalytic activity. Genetic variants of human butyrylcholinesterase were one of the first examples in the new field of pharmacogenetics when it was recognized that abnormal response to the succinylcholine was due to a mutated enzyme with low binding affinity. Beside that, variant of BChE has potential impact for Alzheimer disease patology.

Abstract

For thousands of years, humans have felt the need to understand the world around them—and ultimately manipulate it to best serve their needs. There are always ethical questions to address, especially when the manipulation involves the human genome. There is currently an urgent need to actively pursue those conversations as com- mercial gene sequencing and editing technologies have become more accessible and affordable. Gene Editing has enormous potential both as a research tool and a therapeutic intervention. While other types of gene editing are relatively uncontroversial, gene editing has been strongly resisted.
