Since 2017, all papers submitted to the journal should be written in good English. Authors for whom English is not their native language are encouraged to have their paper checked before submission for grammar and clarity. English language and copyediting services can be provided by English Faculty . The work should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. The official language of the manuscript to be published in journal Lingua is English. Lingua Journal is published two times a year by English Education Study Program Faculty of Teaching and Educational Sciences As-Syafi’iyah Islamic University of Jakarta. The journal welcomes articles on English language teaching and research. Articles should be in English, typed double-spaced on quarto-size paper. Abstract

This study examines the effect of using collaborative dialogue technique on EFL learner’s vocabulary acquisition at SMA Tunas Markatin Rawamangun. The purpose of this research is to find out whether or not there is the effect of using collaborative dialogue technique on students’ vocabulary acquisition. The subject consisted 50 students and divided into two classes (experimental class and control class), consist of 25 students in each class. The sampling technique was randomize sampling. To collect data the researcher used two instruments in the form of objective multiple choice each numbering 30 for both experiment class and control class out of 60 question items for experiment class and control class having been tried out at class X at SMA Vinama, Bekasi. The score obtained from the try out class were used to analyze the validity, reliability, discrimination power and difficulty index of each question item in the two instruments. The analysis using SPSS-based One-Way Anova formula produced significance (Sig) value of 0.000. Since the significant value was smaller than (<) Alpha 0, 05, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. Accordingly the research concluded that there was significant effect of collaborative dialogue on grade ten students’ vocabulary acquisition at SMA Tunas Markatin, Rawamangun in the academic Year of 2016/2017.

Abstract

This research entitled “Investigating The Effect of Drama as Teaching Technique on Grade Eight Students’ Vocabulary Acquisition at MTs Assyairiyah Attahiriyah Jakarta” principally aims to investigate whether or not drama technique significantly affects students’ vocabulary acquisition. The research samples were taken using cluster random sampling, with the total number of samples being 60 students. The location of this research was MTs Assyairiyah Attahiriyah Jakarta. The research methodology adopted was quasi-experiment method, with the research design being post test only control group design. To collect the data, the students were given the objective test, numbering 30 items. The research data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The findings indicated that there was significant difference of post-test score between the students who received drama technique and students who did not receive drama technique. It can be seen from the data analysis using ANOVA that showed Fobserved (90.988) is higher than the critical value of Ftable (at the significant level of 0.05 and df = 1/84), namely 3.96. it means that drama technique has significant effect on students’ vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

This article points out the results of the research investigating the effect of note takingstrategy on the third semester students’ listening comprehension of English Education StudyProgram, Faculty of Teaching and Educational Sciences, Universitas Islam As-Syafi’iyahJakarta. The research samples were taken using purposive sampling, with the total numberof samples is 30 students.The research methodology was pre-experiment method, with onegrouppretest posttest design. Data collection procedure was completed by the students byobtaining scoresin the listening section of PET test,30 items.The findings indicated that therewas significant difference of score between the students who received note taking strategyand students who did not receive note taking strategy. It can be seen from the data analysisusing ANOVA that showed significance value of 0.000 was smaller than (<) Alpha 0.05 andFobserved (15.873) is higher than the critical value of Ftable(2.35). It means that note takingstrategy has significant effect on students’ listening comprehension ability.The Implicationof result research can benefit both lecturer and students in listening comprehension strategy.

Abstract

The present work is an analysis of translation technique in translating narrative text. Ingeneral, there are many aspects of translation techniques that can be discussed, nor in thisresearch the researcher only use eight techniques such as literal translation, idiom translation,calque translation, etc. Moreover, the purpose of this research is to investigate the product oftranslation English to Indonesian from the students of English Department 2013 intranslating Narrative text and analyzed it by using eight techniques in translating it. The datain this research is carried out by using qualitative method. This research reveals that thedominant technique that the participants use is borrowing technique, by amounting about 37times. Meanwhile, the less dominant technique that the participants use is transpositiontechnique by amounting about 7 times. Furthermore, those participants prefer to useborrowing technique it is because they believe that it is more familiar diction and easy forthe readers to understand the text.

Abstract

Learning english vocabulary using jeopardy game technique make the studentsfeel interesting and grasping new words easily. Therefore, the purpose of this researchis to find out whether or not there is significant effect of jeopardy game on grade sevenstudents’ vocabulary knowledge. The sampels were taken using cluster randomsampling technique, with the total number of sampels are 74 students which aredivided into two classes. The location is at MTs Al-Ihsan Bekasi. The research methodadopted was quasi experimental with research design was post-test only control group.To collect data, the students were given instruments in the form of objective, multiplechoice each numbering 30 for both control class and Experimental class. The findingsshowed that the jeopardy class students got mean score 80 higher than non-jeopardyclass students who got 77. It indicates that there is a significant difference in each classand can be seen from the analysis using one way ANOVA that produced (Sig.) valueof 0.002 was smaller than (<) Alpha 0.05, Ho is rejected and HA is accepted. Itshowed tha there is significant effect of jeopardy game on grade seven students’vocabulary knowledge at Mts Al-Ihsan Bekasi in the Academic Year of 2016-2017.

Abstract

This study aims to explore, describe and analyze the use of mobile game application byelementary students to support EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learning particularlylistening skill. In this study, observation and interview are utilized to obtain the data. 8(Eight) Elementary students were participated in this study. Finding shows that studentsuse mobile game application to access content such as listen to English words or sentenceby native speaker and vocabulary. The participants of this study show positive responsetoward the use of mobile game apps in learning English listening skill. They believed thatusing mobile game apps helped them in listening, vocabulary and spelling. As theimplication of this study, it is recommended to use mobile game application for EFLstudents in order to boost their interest in learning English and the apps can be one of bestmedia to teach listening for young learners.

Abstract

The research consists of two variables, namely the independent variable (Synectics Technique)and the dependent variable (Vocabulary Acquisition). The purpose of this research is to findout whether or not there is significant effect of synectics technique on students’ vocabularyacquisition. This research was conducted on grade ten students of SMK Budi Perkasa TambunSelatan in academic year of 2017/2018. Research method used in this research was quasiexperimental, quantitative and the design was randomized post-test only control group design.The analysis using SPSS-based One Way Anova Formula produced significance (Sig.) valueof 0.033. since the significance value was smaller than (<)0.05, Ho is rejected and HAisaccepted. (Fobserved)5.018 also showed that is higher than the critical value of (Ftable) (at thesignificant level of 0.05 and df (1; 60)), namely 4.02. it can be concluded that Fobserved (5.018)> Ftable (4.02). Accordingly the research concludes that there is significant effect of synecticstechnique on grade ten students’ vocabulary acquisition at SMK Budi Perkasa Tambun Selatanin the Academic Year of 2017-2018.

Abstract

This research aims to examine whether or not Collaborative Strategy Readingsignificantly affects on students’ reading comprehension. The research samples weretaken using cluster random sampling, with the total number of samples being 72students.The location of this research was SMK Pusaka 1 Jakarta. The research methodologyadopted was Quasi- Experimental methodby involving two groups, namely experimentgroup and control group, with the research design being randomized post-test only controlgroup design. To collect the data, the students were given objective test, numbering 30items. The research data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The findingsindicated that there was significant difference of post-test score between the students whois givenCollaborative Strategy Readingand students who did not getCollaborativeStrategy Reading. It can be seen from the data analysis by using ANOVA that showedFobserved (10.530) is higher than the critical value of Ftable (at the significant level of 0.05and df = 1/70), namely 3.98. It means that Collaborative Strategy Readinghas significanteffect on students’ reading comprehension in recount text.

Abstract

The advancement of technology makes the use of media growing rapidly, but its application in the field of learning, especialy English is still fairly minimal. Recently, the use of technologies has grown to be popular in ESL / EFL teaching, TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) is one of them. Hence, the aim of this research is to find out whether there is or no effect of the use of TED Talks video on grade eleven students’ listening skill. The research was conducted at SMAN 89 Jakarta in the academic year 2017/2018. The population of this research consists of 216 students sitting on six classes. The samples of the research were taken by the means of cluster random sampling from the population with the total sample number of 70 students consisted of 35 students each class. The adopted research methodology was quasi-experimental research, with the research design being randomized post-test only control group design. The statistic method used to analyze the data was One-Way ANOVA using SPSS through the testing of Null Hypotheses, which was preceded by the normality test and homogeneity test as the pre-requisite to the data analysis. The result of the test showed that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted which proves that there is significant effect of the use of TED Talks on grade eleven students’ listening skill.

This research was conducted on grade Eleven Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability in Narrative text at SMA Islam As-Syafi’iyah 02 Bekasi, in the academic year of 2017/2018. Research method applied in this research was quantitative quasi-experimental, and the research design was randomized post-test only control group design. To collect the data, the writer used one instrument in the form of objective test, with number of questions are sixty for reading comprehension ability that have been tried out in grade eleven at SMA Patriot Bekasi.
