Abstract

Using simple and interesting strategies in teaching Prose is a must for a lecturer. There are many new methods or strategies to be applied in our classroom when we teach our students the characterization theories, one of them is STEAL Strategy. It is basically the characterization theories that have been summed up into a mnemonic device in form of an acronym (Speech, Thought, Effect on Others, Action, Looks) to help our students to easily memorize something. This writing is trying to prove the effectiveness of the strategy when it is applied to a novel entitled BFG written by Roald Dahl. The results show that this strategy helped the writer in making inferences, finding specific textual evidence to support the assertion about the chosen character, and also developing arguments. Therefore, the writer would like to suggest the English Study Program lecturers who teach Prose or Extensive Reading to apply this method in his or her classroom.

Abstract

This paper discusses the characteristics of cako marriage as the symbol of cultural identity for Manggarai society, as reflected in the meaning of the cako marriage, customary rules in the cako marriage, and the changes of social role and status in the cako marriage, in view of social anthropology which deals with the study of the relationship of culture and society. The materials are based on data collected through research which is descriptive in nature. The results of study show that the cako marriage refers to the form of marriage between a man of the elder offspring and a woman of the younger offspring. As the two families are of the same clan, the cako marriage is endogamy. Based on the customary rules of Manggarai society, the cako marriage is only permitted for a woman of the younger offspring of the third layer above. Due to the cako marriage, the social role and status change in some respect as the elder offspring acts as wife taker is known as anak wina in Manggarai language and the younger offspring acts as wife giver known as anak rona in Manggarai language. Being wife taker, the elder offspring holds lower power, or vice versa, being wife giver, the younger offspring holds higher power.

Abstract

This paper describes and explains the essence of reference and inference as the linguistic devices forming the unity of a discourse. The material of this paper is based on secondary data collected through library research and the method of data collection was a documentary study. The results of the study show that references and inferences as the linguistic devices are two external elements forming the unity of discourse that should be taken into account when someone wants to understand and interpret the meanings of the language used in a discourse of text of discourse. As such, it is required for him/her to know in more depth about the essence of reference and inference in line with their functions and significances as the external elements forming the unity of discourse.

Abstract

Menulis skripsi adalah salah satu prasyarat untuk meraih gelar sarjana. Para mahasiswa diberi kebebasan memilih judul atau topik untuk diteliti, dikaji dan dianalisis menjadi sebuah tulisan ilmiah dalam rangka mengimplementasi teori yang telah diterima selama perkuliahan. Problematika pembelajaran bahasa dan sastra Indonesia di SMP, SMA, dan SMK merupakan objek yang sangat kompleks, menarik, dan penting untuk dikaji Untuk dapat menguji dan menganalisis kemampuan siswa, para mahasiswa seyogyanya telah terlebih dahulu memiliki kemampuan tersebut. Menguji kemampuan siswa dalam hal ini, tidak dapat dibatasi hanya pada persoalan ketertarikan atau keberminatan semata. Ketertarikan yang juga harus ditunjang oleh kemampuan diri. Artikel ini menyajikan, sebuah skripsi yang secara cermat menguraikan latar belakang, merumuskan masalah, menentukan teori sebagai landasan penelitian, memilih metode penelitian, membahas hasil penelitian, sampai penyimpulan. Kecermatan penulis skripsi tersebut, mendorong penulis menyajikan artikel ini dan diberi judul “Kecermatan Menganalisis Kemampuan Menulis Teks Eksposisi”. Judul yang tampak tak berbatas itu akan menjadi spesifik ketika penulis memaparkan bagaimana penulis skripsi menguraikan latar belakang, menentukan landasan teori, memilih dan menetapkan metode, menyajikan dan membahas hasil penelitian, sampai pada kecermatannya dalam membuat simpulan.

Abstract

Salah satu unsur budaya masyarakat Timor Dawan adalah tuturan tonis. Jenis tuturan ini memiliki ciri bahasa dan unsur ‘pelisanan’ yang khas yang dilaksanakan dalam berbagai jenis ritual baik yang bersifat sosial maupun yang bersifat relijius. Bahkan, tuturan tonis itu sendiri adalah inti dan puncak pelaksanaan setiap acara resmi secara adat dan ritual dalam masyarakat ini. Tonis digolongkan kedalam jenis sastra ungkapan karena teks sastra ini terbentuk dari unsur-unsur imajinasi, kata kongkret, gaya bahasa, diksi, irama yang menjadi satu keutuhan dan keterpaduan untuk menjalankan fungsi-fungsi ekspresif, tematis, dan fungsi sosial dalam masyarakat pemiliknya. Sebagai teks lisan, tuturan tonis terdiri atas atau terbentuk dari adanya bentuk bahasa, artikulasi, volume suara, nada dan intonasi, ekspresi dan gerak fisik. Secara umum, isi tonis mencakup unsur dan perangkat-perangkat dalam wujud pernyataan-pernyataan yang isinya adalah tentang orang, tempat, dan peristiwa berdasarkan sejarah, kepercayaan, tema-tema kehidupan, keadaan dan hukum alam, hukum adat, norma-norma kemanusiaan, dan budaya. Sebagai teks, tonis ada dan berfungsi karena memiliki makna dan nilai. Itu berarti bahwa baik atau buruknya tonis didasarkan pada kemampun pembentukan makna atau ‘pembermaknaan’ dan kemampuan pembentukan nilai atau kemampuan ‘pembernilaian’ oleh penutur tonis atau atonis melalui kemampuan memanfaatkan perangkat-perangkat tonis dan kemampuan vokal, kontak, dan visual dalam penyajian atau pelantunan tonis.

Abstract

To commemorate the Language Month and Youth Oath, October 28, 1928, the counseling team took the initiative to conduct an Indonesian language counseling for teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang Tengah. The target of this counseling is teachers because all subject teachers in schools have the same responsibilities as Indonesian language teachers. The teacher is a good model of using Indonesian language for students. The problems faced by PPM partners are (1) teachers are not yet aware of the role of Indonesian as a vehicle for unifying the nation, unifying various tribes with local languages ​​living in Indonesia; (2) there are still many teachers who think that learning Indonesian in schools is the responsibility of Indonesian language teachers, even though it should be the responsibility of all subject teachers; (3) teachers are not yet aware of the important role of Indonesian as a window to the world or as a vehicle for knowledge; (4) there are still many teachers who have not been careful in writing absorption words or original Indonesian words, writing affixed words, and so on. The purpose of this counseling is that the participants have the competence of an attitude of respecting the Indonesian language as a unifying tool for the nation and as a vehicle for knowledge, and are proficient in using Indonesian language that is good and right in various domains of language use.Outreach shows that the teachers of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang Tengah expressed satisfaction with this counseling. They realize that so far they are not aware of the important role and function of the Indonesian language as a unifying tool for the nation and as a vehicle for knowledge. They also realize that so far they do not care and are not careful in speaking Indonesian. This counseling is very useful for them. Before being given counseling the teachers of SMAN 1 Kupang were only mastering 50, 43% of the material discussed in the extension. But after being given counseling, their mastery level of counseling materials reached 85.96%. This shows that this counseling has succeeded in increasing the competence of teachers and education personnel in SMA Negeri 1 Kupang Tengah in using standard Indonesian.
