Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out what strategies female English students utilize in their English learning in the digital era by using ICT namely technology tools and social media applications. This research took place at the State University of Makassar, Faculty of Language and Literature. The participants of this research were female students of the English Education Study Program class 2021. The researcher used a case study qualitative method with a purposive sampling technique to select the participants. The instrument of this research was questionnaire and interview. Based on the result of the questionnaire and interview, The researcher found that female English students’ strategies for improving their listening skills were watching Western movies, watching video gaming on YouTube, watching English lesson videos, watching TikTok content from native speakers/foreigners, listening to English song, and doing listening exercises; in improving their speaking skills were speaking English with friends by chatting, watching western movies then practice it, watching English lesson videos, watching English videos on TikTok from overseas content creator and learning vocabulary; in improving their reading skill were reading online comics, reading e-books/articles in English, reading movie subtitles, and reading captions and comments on Twitter; in improving their writing skills were doing essay writing assignments, writing social media status, chatting on WhatsApp, and practice writing on Grammarly.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the students’ perception of the lecturer's tone of voice as a style of communication in teaching English during virtual meeting sessions for English education students, at Universitas Negeri Makassar. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The participants in this study were third-year students. The data was collected through interviews. Based on the general results of the interviews, the participants gave positive perceptions. The results of the data showed that students have a positive perception of lecturers’ tone of voice as a style of communication in teaching English during virtual meeting sessions.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out students’ perception of the use of Islamic English songs in learning and listening at Madrasah Aliyah of Pesantren Modern IMMIM Putra Makassar. This research used the mixed methods approach. The population of this research was the students of the third-grade Madrasah Aliyah of Pesantren Modern IMMIM Putra Makassar. Through a purposive sampling technique, there were 21 students in the third grade were chosen to be the sample of this research. The instruments of this research were a questionnaire and an interview. The research findings showed that there are 8 students (38.1%) in the category of strongly positive perception, and 7 students (33.3%) in the category of positive perception. It is supported by the data obtained based on the three aspects of perception. From the cognitive aspect, 8 students (38.1%) were in the strongly positive category and 8 students (38.1%) were in the positive category. From the affective aspect, 8 students (38.1%) were in the strongly positive category and 8 students (38.1%) were in the positive category. From the conative aspect, 10 students (47.62%) were in the strongly positive category and 6 students (28.57%) were in the positive category. The researcher also found some additional information from the interview results. It was found that the students “agreed to”, “were comfortable about”, and “were motivated to” the use of Islamic English songs in learning listening at Madrasah Aliyah of Pesantren Modern IMMIM Putra Makassar.

Abstract

This research highlights the use of flashcards application in teaching vocabulary. The study's goals were to discover how students' vocabulary may be improved by utilizing flashcards programs. To fulfill the aims, the researcher performed classroom action research, with 30 students chosen using a purposive selection approach as participants. The result of this research was gathered by multiple tests, they were pretest, a cycle 1 test, a cycle 2 test, and a post-test. The result of this research showed that most of the students had an improvement in learning vocabulary using a flashcard application in the pretest the students could not reach the KKM score, they only could attain 49.00 but after learning using the flashcard application, they achieved 1990 (63.33) for cycle 1 test, 2515 (83.83) for cycle 2 test and 2766 (92.2) for the final posttest.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the application of project-based learning in the speaking class of second-year English language education students, at the State University of Makassar. This study used an exploratory qualitative method. The data of this research were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The subjects of this study were an English lecturer who teaches in the second-year and the second-year English language education students that consisted of two classes. The result of data analysis found that (1) the application of project-based learning in second-year English language education students has been implemented very well by the lecturer and the students (2) the application of project-based learning in speaking classes for the second-year produces research projects that are presented at the end of the semester using posters (3) constraints encountered in applying project-based learning in speaking classes are students are not used to working in teamwork to work on projects with research output, students have difficulty compiling research instruments, students have difficulty finding respondents, and there are still students who are not actively involved in class (4) the student’s speaking skills and students’ learning motivation have increased after the application of the project-based learning method in the extensive speaking class.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the effect of using the “Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM)” on students’ vocabulary mastery. The method used in this research is pre-experiment with one group pretest-posttest. The population in this study were students of class VIII at SMP Negeri 28 Makassar for the 2022/2023 academic year. This research used a cluster random sampling technique. The sample of this research was class VIII A, which consisted of 20 students. The instrument used in this research was a vocabulary test. The results of this study, the mean score of students' pretest and posttest was increased (64.80 to 86.05). The standard deviation score for the pretest (17.59) and posttest (9.53), showed that the standard deviation of the posttest was smaller than the standard deviation of the pretest. The result of statistical hypothesis testing by using sample t-test found that (Sig < α (0.05)), Therefore, Ho was rejected and H1 was accepted, which means that the use of the Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) can improve students' vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine whether there was a significant effect of the use of audio podcasts on the students’ listening skills. This research was done at SMAN 4 Makassar. The population of this research was the students of SMAN 4 Makassar. The researchers used cluster random sampling to choose the sample of the research. The sample of this research was 25 students from XI IPA 3. The researchers used a quantitative technique. The instrument of this research was a listening test using audio podcasts which was administered as a pretest and post-test. Based on the result of the data analysis showed that the use of audio podcasts improved the students’ listening skills. It was shown by the mean post-test score which was higher than the pretest means score (51.76 > 63.63). The value of the t-test was more significant (0.005). Then, the researchers concluded that using audio podcast on listening skills has a significant effect on students’ listening skills.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out how YouTube is used as an English learning media among students in the second semester and fourth semesters of English Department Students of the Faculty of Languages and Literature, State University of Makassar.  This research used a purposive sampling technique with students in the second semester and students in the fourth semester. The study employed a qualitative method with a case study design. This research used questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as data collection methods. The results showed that students in this study used the YouTube application to learn English by watching content they liked, such as film and animation, music videos, educational, gaming, news, how-to, style, sports, food vloggers, talk shows, and religious content. The ways they learn to use YouTube are various, such as activating the subtitle or transcript feature, reading video titles or descriptions, reading comments, listening to music than looking for words they do not know, noting new vocabulary they hear from speakers, practicing pronunciation, etc. These things help them improve their English skills, specifically listening, enlarging their vocabulary, and increasing their pronunciation knowledge. In addition, YouTube provides fun English content with interesting YouTube features that make students more comfortable and enthusiastic about learning English, this also makes it easier for students to understand the material presented without getting bored. Students also expressed their challenges in using YouTube for learning English, such as inappropriate content, annoying advertisements, internet connection problem, and unavailability of the transcript feature on some videos. Based on the result, it can be concluded that most students of the English Education Study Program use the YouTube application to improve their English language skills and language components by watching English content they like by listening to the speaker, activating the subtitle or transcript feature, and read the title and comments on the video.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between the Critical Thinking Skills of Students on Indicators of Concluding and Providing Further Explanation. The population in this study were all students in grade VIII of SMP SMPN 17 Makassar, totaling 290 students and spread across 10 different classes. This research is a descriptive correlative study with a quantitative approach. Sampling was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The sampling technique in this study was to use a saturated sampling technique so the total sample in this study was 290 students. The data were then processed by descriptive statistical analysis with normality test, significance test, mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and coefficient of determination. This study uses the Pearson correlation technique. The results show that there is a very low correlation between critical thinking skills in giving simple explanations and building basic skills categorized as very low with a value of 0.17.

Abstract

This study is a pre-experimental research that aims to find out the use of mind mapping to improve students’ writing skills. The participants were the students of VIII-3 MTsN 2 Makassar for the academic year 2021/2022 with as many as twenty-two students. Cluster random sampling was used as the way of selecting the sample and a writing test (descriptive text) was administered as the way of collecting data. The result showed that the score of students’ writing skill tests was improving after conducting mind mapping in the writing class. The mean score of students’ writing tests before and after applying the mind mapping technique improved (53.18 to 75.27). It means that the student’s writing skills can be improved by using mind mapping as a teaching strategy in writing class.
