Abstract

This research aimed at finding out whether or not systemic approach can improve students’ adjective mastery. Pre-experimental design was applied in this research with one group pretest - posttest design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Makassar, academic year 2017/2018, which consisted of 8 classes. This research used simple random sampling. The samples were 26 students of 7A. The research instrument used vocabulary test consisted of word form, word meaning, and word use as the research instrument. The result of this research showed that the application of systemic approach can improve students’ adjective mastery. The result of this research showed that the application of systemic approach can improve students’ adjective mastery. It was proved by the t-test value which was lower than 0.05. it was (0.00) > (0.05) and degree of freedom (n-1) = 25. And the result of the result showed that the mean score of pre-test was 54.64 and mean score of post-test was 78.16.

Abstract. Tracing and Optimizing Students’ Thinking Capabilities in Improving Quality of Differential Equations Instruction. This study aims at tracing the deductive-inductive thinking skills of students in understanding concepts in Differential Equations Course, optimizing deductive-inductive thinking skills, and helping students improve their way of thinking. The results of this study show that the average score of the students’ deductive abilities increased from 39.49 to 54.80, while the inductive capacity score dropped from 16.10 to 9.24. This indicates that students tend to think and reason deductively, and a greater number of students (69.67%) wanted the differential equations material to be taught with a deductive approach and only 30.33% of the students who wanted the material taught with an inductive approach. Abstract

This study aimed at identifying intercultural sensitivity elements perceived by English department students in an Indonesian university. Broadly, this study used mix-methods: quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires. The questionnaires were sent to 100 participants and followed by semi-structured interview of 10 participants. For this paper, only quantitative data were used. The findings show that there were three important intercultural sensitivity dimensions: cultural engagement, respect to cultural differences and interaction enjoyment. This study contributes to the more understanding of intercultural dimensions and debates across the globe about intercultural issues. In addition, this study provides methodological contribution on the set of criteria to determine the scale of intercultural sensitivity.  This study has further implication of the teaching and learning as one of the key elements on English curriculum. The study suggested that the research on wider participants can further enhance the sounding of this findings and provide overarching understanding of intercultural sensitivity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the students' mathematical reasoning abilities in solving TIMSS cognitive domain reasoning problems in algebraic content in terms of the student’s thinking style of the students. The type of research is a qualitative research study with a descriptive approach. The subjects of this research consisted of one student who representing each of the concrete sequential thinking styles. The instrument of this research used consisted of thinking style questionnaires, mathematical reasoning ability test questions, and interview guidelines. The results of this study indicate that: SK thinking style subjects are able to meet four indicators of mathematical reasoning ability, namely: a) the ability to make guesses, b) the ability to draw conclusions, arrange evidence, provide reasons or evidence for the truth of the solution, c) the ability to draw the validity of an argumen, and d) the ability to find patterns or the nature of mathematical symptoms to make generalizations.

Abstract

The objective of this study was focused on the observation on the practice of PBLCS learning model, and its impact on the development of personal intelligence (interpersonal and intrapersonal) students. This study used a quasi-experimental design with one factor measurement. The study population was students of class XI, IPA (Natural Science) SMAN (Senior High School) 22 in Makassar City, including 6 top schools and 16 regular schools, in the second semester in the period 2012/2013. The sample of this study included both one top school and two regular schools using a random sampling technique. Based on the sample selection technique, two classes were selected from the top school; SMAN 1 and two classes from regular classes; SMAN 4, and SMAN 18, involving 103 students for PBLCS and 103 students for PT (traditional class). Data of this study were analyzed inferentially and descriptively, inferential analysis using multivariate statistic and a multivariate analysis using variance or one-way MANOVA. The results of this study showed that the implementation of PBLCS model (treated class) was better than the PT strategy (controlled class) in developing personal intelligence of students, with the significance 0.000 <α = 0.05. It was supported by descriptive data indicating that the mean score of personal intelligence development. Both interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence of students in the treated class was higher than the development of interpersonal or intrapersonal intelligence students in the controlled class.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijere.v3i4.6969

Abstract

This research is a qualitative research with descriptive method. This study aims to describe the ability to think creatively based on the type of student personality, the type of choleric personality in solving mathematical problems. The research subjects were students in the odd semester of class XII IPA 1 SMA Negeri 22 Makassar, the 2019/2020 school year. This subject was chosen by giving a personality questionnaire to students. The data was collected using a mathematical problem solving test instrument on the number sequence material and interviews. The validity of the data was checked by using the triangulation method. The results showed: Students with choleric personality in solving mathematical problems. In question number 1, the subject had difficulty in finding the formula for the nth term. But the subject kept trying and the spirit of trying until finally found the correct formula for the nth term. The subject of the choleric personality type is also said to be able to fulfill the three indicators of creative thinking, namely fluency, flexibility, and novelty. In question number 2, the subject had difficulty finding many ways to solve the problem and only met one indicator of creative thinking, namely fluency.
