Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the kinds of students' anxiety in speaking English and the factors that cause students' anxiety in speaking English. The method used in this research was a qualitative method. The results showed that all students felt anxious in speaking English in discussion, this affected the students' speaking performance in group discussion. In addition, factors that make students anxious, are pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary. This is implied by students' anxiety in speaking English skill through group discussion.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the students’ difficulties in learning intermediate grammar courses, especially in modal auxiliaries and reported speech materials as well as the factors of students’ difficulties in learning grammar in English Education Department at IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo. This research study used the qualitative method. The population was 10 students of third semester in English Education Department at IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo. Next, techniques of data collection were observation sheet and interview. The result showed that most students have not understood and confused to use all the modal auxiliaries, the use of “to” and without “to”, and they did not memorize the formulas pattern of positive, negative and interrogative sentence. Also, students were confused in displacement of tenses because they did not know the formula, and were confused how to use pronoun and time pronoun because they did not memorize. Furthermore, factors that affect the students’ difficulties in learning grammar start from a lack motivation, learning strategies, teaching methods, educational background and family environment.

Abstract

This research study aims to investigate the effect of game mastery in learning English toward students’ vocabulary. This research employed the qualitative method. The data sources of this research are the ten international indexed journals and two national indexed journals. There are many studies about the games for learning, but those articles focus on vocabularies. This study approved that the use of games affected students’ vocabulary mastery. By using the games in learning activities, the English teachers are to facilitate the students for improving their mastering in vocabulary. There are some games that can be used to enhance vocabulary skill. They are Scattergories Game, Digital Game Based Learning, Language Games (Crowspuzzle and so on particular primary school. Then, there are Hangaroo Game, and Digital Games for intermediate students. However, this study suggests to the next researcher to analyze deeply an advantage and disadvantage of games to improve students’ vocabulary. Because this study still has many limitations to explore the games.

Abstract

Learning enviroment affects students' learning qualitiyin the class. It needs teachers' ability to manage the seating arrangement. This study aimed to describe the English teachers' perception on the seating arrangement and to find out obstacles faced by teachers when applying seating arrangement. This study employed descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The result of the study indicated that the perception of the English teachers on the seating arrangement pattern is vey important. The class arrangement that has been applied is the seating pattern in the form of a separated table and solo work. With the aim that class conditions are fun and not monotonous. Obstacles that were often faced by the teachers; a) Student conditions, they often make noise when changed the seating arrangement pattern. Even, they were not only hard to manage but also protested to change; b) Classroom condition, a narrow room is also an inhibiting factor for the application of the seating arrangement pattern. Therefore, this research study is to encourage teachers to create the learning environment which affect to the students’ learning quality.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of ICT equipment and to describe the use of ICT in English Language Teaching and Learning by English teachers at MAN I Kota Gorontalo. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with interviews and documentation from lesson plan in the data collection. Ten students of class X and XI in the second semester of 2019/2020 and two English teachers were involved in this research. The data were analyzed by reducing data, displaying, and then drawing the conclusions. The result showed that the first was the type of media used by the teachers in teaching and learning process are: laptops computers, LCDs, Sound systems, Power Points, Google Classroom Google Forms, and WhatsApp groups. Second, the teaching and learning process of ICT-based media has been included in Lesson Plan (RPP) by supporting applications such as PowerPoints for presenting initial material creating WhatsApp groups for assignment submissions, and Google class Google forms for evaluation. Apan from the use of ICT-based media, other learning resources are in form of English books There is also collaboration between media and methods in learning Suggestion are given to schools, teachers and further researchers.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' Students Reading Fluency through Choral Reading Method at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP N. 1 Botupingge. This research is a Classroom Action Research (PTK). The subjects of this study are the students of grade VII SMP N. 1 Botupingge who numbered 22 students. This study consists of two cycles. Each cycle consists of four stages, namely planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Data collection techniques used in this study is test observation, and documentation. The research instruments used include the observation sheet, the test of reading fluency (accuracy, Rate, and Prosody) and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis technique and supported by quantitative data. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of choral reading can improve students’ reading fluency in students of class VII SMP N. 1 Botupingge both in terms of process and product. The improved processes can be seen in student activities in the learning process. This is indicated by the increase of students in attention to learning, enthusiastic liveliness, and atmosphere of learning in the classroom more conducive. Improving process quality has a positive impact on product quality improvement. This is seen in the test results of reading fluency starting from cycle 1 up to cycle 2. Based on this result, it can be concluded that choral reading method can improve students’ reading fluency at seventh grade of SMP N. 1 Botupingge.

Abstract

The study discusses the effect that technology can have on a student's reading behavior. Where students now a day spend a lot of time with cell phones. Rapid advances in telecommunications technology, media and information technologies and the widespread development of global information infrastructure transform learning and reading patterns into global paradigms. It was this paradigm that became dominant and effectively became involved in the revolution of information networks, which would later determine the future of national welfare. Technology, however, remains the initial hypothesis before research is carried out. In this method is use qualitative method. Study using qualitative method provided a comprehensive and clear picture of the social situations studied, comparative events from one social to another or from one time to another; or be able to find patterns of connections between certain aspects and others, and be able to find hypotheses and theories. In a study that described the work done by 12 respondents. Based on Moleong, the aim of the writer is to examine how the student's behavior, habits, and perceptions of how technology affects reading habits for them. The purpose of this study is to know whether technology has a major impact on student reading behavior. The results of this study indicate that technology had a positive impact on the interest in reading students, but most students prefer reading nonfiction rather than reading lessons. And technology can has a negative impact on the student as student interest is distracted and they are sedated with the modern technological sophistication of gadgets.

Abstract

Mastering of vocabulary is part of mastering a language, especially English, because if someone mastered the language, it means that person mastering of vocabulary. In other words, the more vocabulary students have the easier for students to compose words and communicate well. Such as learning English they say that the main reason was found difficulties to understand the lesson and the solution to all of these problems was the teachers should make learning media as attractive as possible the can, so that they can attract students to make small notes for the vocabulary they get from media learning. Besides, the teacher can motivate students to be more active in adding new vocabulary trough pop up method. In this research using a qualitative method in which the process of research was observed the students vocabulary. In the results of this study was the weakness of vocabulary mastering in high school. Teachers also was implemented several methods in order to help students in the process of mastering words. Not only the Teacher, but also the researcher suggests several methods to be used so that students can easily understand English quickly.

Abstract

This research aims to know error analysis in using transition signal on students’ Paragraph Writing. The subjects of this research were sixth semester students of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Sultan Amai Gorontalo. English Education Department, in academic year 2018/2019, consisted of 20 students. The method used in this research was a qualitative method with a descriptive design. Technique of collecting data was carried out through interview. Data analysis was performed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the types of error in using transition signal that existed in Paragraph Writing namely; punctuation for transition signal, sentence and clause connectors, types of transition signal, placement of transition signal and repetitive transition signal. The implication of this research was students did not have good competence in using transition signal according to their function and grammar, but some transition signals were still used inappropriately.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the students' difficulties in the Essay Writing course. The subjects of this study were fifth semester students of the Department of English Education at IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo for the 2019/2020 academic year, totaling 5 students. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive design. Data was collected through observation sheets, interviews and documentation. Analysis data is done through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that there were four difficulties in the Essay Writing course, namely Lack of vocabulary, Lack of grammar mastery, Lack of organization and mechanics mastery in writing. The researcher implies that lecturers must pay attention to students' vocabulary mastery and students' grammatical skills.
