Abstract

This research aims at integrating Islamic Values into English material especially in basic competencies 3.7 and 4.7 about Daily Routine for the eighth-grade students at MTs Madani Pao-Pao based on the 2013 curriculum. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found that the textbook that used in the school was too general and still far from the term integrated with Islamic values. The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R&D). The development model used was the ADDIE model. It consists of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The procedures included analyzing materials needed by distributing questionnaires to the students and analyzing the basic competencies used, designing a blueprint of materials, and developing the English materials through the ADDIE model. In this research, the expert was involved to validate the product. There were two systematic aspects that they validated of the product: the aspect of the content/material and the aspect of learning. Therefore, the result indicated that based on experts’ judgment as well as product development result, the developed basic competencies 3.7 and 4.7 about Daily Routine materials was applicable to be taught at the eighth-grade students of Junior High School as topics in English for them.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether collaborative writing is effective to improve students' writing skills or not and to know students' perceptions of collaborative writing. This research was conducted at SMAN 3 Majene. The samples of the research were 40 students from grade X or tenth grade. The researchers employed mixed research methods. Researcher used tests to collect data about the ability to write descriptive texts and interviews as research instruments to collect data about the extent of the influence of collaborative writing on motivation and self-confidence in learning. The data analysis technique uses Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) 20 to analyze quantitative data and qualitative descriptive analysis techniques to analyze qualitative data and the results of this study indicate that there is an effect of collaborative writing on learning motivation. Based on the results of the N-Gain score test which were analyzed using SPSS, it showed that the average N-Gain score for the experimental group (collaborative writing) was 52.5034. It is categorized less effective category with a minimum N-Gain value of 36, 17% and a maximum value of 66.67%, it indicates that the effect of collaborative writing on students' learning motivation is able to improve students' writing skills with category less effective. Thus, this collaborative writing is recommended to improve students’ writing skills.

Abstract

The development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is globally unavoidable since it becomes a booster for all life aspects, including but not limited to teaching and learning. Internet provides limitless resources teaching and learning media, one of those are videos in YouTube. The objective of this study is to know, whether or not YouTube media can improve students’ listening skill in English teaching. The subject of the study was eleventh grader (11) SMK Negeri 2 Majene. The total population is 65 students from two classes, as the sample is consisted of 30 students. In this study, researcher used quantitative method on pre-Experimental research, with one group pre-test and post-test. The pre-test result was compared to the post-test result to determine whether or not the trajectory is successful. This research uses quantitative research. Result from pre-test to post-test students can hear English well. Thus, using YouTube media in learning process is effective to improve students' listening ability. This is proved by the mean score of pre-tests which is 17 and post-test obtained score of 30.1. That means the ability to listen to students increase 13.1 points. T-test value is 6,89 and T-table is 1,699 with degree of freedom (df) 29 and significant level at 5% is 1,699. Based on the analysis data, alternative hypothesis (HI) in this research is accepted because the result of T-value is higher than T-table (6.89> 1.699). It indicates that YouTube media can be effectively applied in learning English for the 11th students in SMK Negeri 2 Majene.

Abstract

This study delineated the lecturer’s teaching strategies in listening for general communication course and described the impacts of those strategies in listening for general communication course toward the students’ engagement in the class. The participants were the first semester students in English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Sulawesi Barat that consisted of five classes which contained of 135 students. While the lecture became a part of the reserch process itself. The technique of data collecting consisted of doing observation in learning process and also giving open ended questionnaire for the students. While technique of data analysis consist of transcribing data from recorded classroom observation and open ended question into written text. In brief, it could be concluded that in this class, the leacture applied two types teaching strategies namely autocratic style and permissive style. In autocratic style the lecture applied lecturing strategy and in permissive style the lecture applied Question answer strategy, Group discussion, Role playing, and Independent study. Based on the research, the most effective strategies in listening for general communication course were question answer strategy, role playing, and Independent study because those strategies made the students contributed in learning process like asking a question, giving opinion, tutoring their friends, and giving feedback weather in written or sopken form after listening the audio. While lecturing and group discussion were not appropriate for listening course because the students be more passive with less engagement. Therefore, it was suggested for the lecture to modify the way in using lecturing and group discussion strategies in listening for general communication course, in order those strategy be more efective in the other class session.

Abstract

Nowadays, there are a lot of online learning platforms. New technologies developed to make learning process easier. One of the examples of online learning platforms is VOA (Voice of American) News. The research aimed to measure the effect of VOA News toward the students’ transactional speaking at Gandra Islamic School Soppeng. This research employed an experiment exactly quasi-experimental research, where the data obtained from the pre-test and post-test. The subjects of this research were 31 students which divided into two groups such as control group which consist of 15 students and experiment group which consist of 15 students at Ganra Islamic School Soppeng. The data was analyzed by using SPSS and found that the H1 was accepted. It proved that the implementation of VOA News improved students’ speaking skill because there was an improvement score from the pre-test to post-test. Based on the finding and discussion of the research, the researcher proposed to provided recommendation especially for an English teacher of Ganra Islamic School Soppeng to imply VOA News as a technique to improve students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

This research was an attempt to find evidence of the influence of the Pair Work Technique on speaking ability. It was conducted at SMPN 2 Sa’dan with a total of 34 students. This study was carried out by Speaking test and Questionnaire in the classroom. It was conducted in 6 meetings. To determine whether the Pair Work Technique for the teaching of speaking was effective, a speaking test was given at the Experimental group in IX-A class to know the students’ speaking ability. The percentage of the students’ speaking ability in Pre-test, namely; 1) 0% students were got excellent, good, and fair category, 2) the percentage of the poor category was 10% (there are 2 students), 3) the percentage of the very poor category was 90% (there are 18 students). And the percentage of the students’ speaking ability in Post-test, namely: 1) the percentage of the excellent category was 0%, but 2) the percentage of the good category was 10% (there are 2 students), 3) the percentage of the fair category was 85% (there are 17 students), 4) the percentage of the poor category was 5% (just 1 student), 5) the percentage of the very poor category was 0%. While to determine whether the Pair Work Technique for the teaching of speaking was effective, a questionnaire was given in the Experimental group to know the students’ motivation. The percentage of the students’ motivation it was found that: 1) the percentage of the strongly motivated classification was 15% (there are 3 students) 2) the percentage of the motivated classification was 75% (there are 15 students) 3) the percentage of the fairly motivated classification was 10% (there are 2 students). It can be concluded that the Pair Work Technique was effective to improve the students’ speaking ability and students’ motivation for the 9th-grade students of SMPN 2 Sa’dan North Toraja in the academic year 2020/2021.

Abstract

This study aims to find out (1) the techniques applied by the English teachers in teaching reading comprehension, (2) whether or not the teaching technique is effectively applied in reading comprehension. This study applied a qualitative method. The participants in this research were 4 English teachers and students consisting of 4 classes for observation, and 10 students per class for interview in SMKN 1 Mamasa. Which was taken through purposive sampling technique. The data of this study were collected by observation, interview, and documentation. The obtained data were analyzed in four major phases namely data collection, data reduction, presentation of data and conclusion drawing. The result of this study revealed that, (1) there are four techniques that are applied by English teachers in teaching comprehension, namely read aloud technique (read aloud together / reading aloud one by one), read over and over, questions answering, and enrich vocabulary through translation and memorizing, (2) when teachers taught using those techniques students become enthusiastic about learning, active, participating, able to understand the contents of the reading, and able to answer the questions given by the teacher. The result also shows that the four teachers applied all the techniques effectively in teaching reading comprehension and based on students’ response all of the techniques applied were more than 80% effective. Therefore, the result of this study indicated that the techniques used by the teachers in SMKN 1 Mamasa, such as Read aloud together/reading aloud one by one, read over and over, questions and answering and Enrich vocabulary throung transalation and memorizing, are effective to the students in learning reading comprehensive of English language.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students’ needs in learning materials by integrating Islamic values into English. This study used quantitative method. The participants were eighth-grade students, consisting of 29 students. This study employed a close-ended questionnaire divided into three sections: organization of the learning material, learning content, and learners' characteristics. Data were analyzed using quantitative data analysis techniques. The results indicated that there are three characteristics of the students' needs. They were the organization materials, the content materials, and learners’ characteristics. In the organization materials, most of the students needed the instructional objectives in English learning materials. Regarding the content materials, the students wanted the virtue of studying, helping parents, and environment as learning topics by integrating them with Islamic values. For the learners’ learning characteristics, they preferred the visual learning style.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the implementation of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension as well as to determine students’ perceptions of the use of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension. In this study, the researcher used a qualitative case study design where the source of the research data was class IX of SMPN 1 Pangale, from the 25 students in class IX, the researcher took 5 students’ to be interviewed in the research sample using random sampling. The researcher collected data using observation and interview instruments. Observations were made to find out the formulation of the problem regarding the implementation of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension. Whereas, the interview was conducted to determine the formulation of theproblem regarding students’ perceptions of the use of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension. After achieving this research, the researcher concluded that the implementation of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension has a good effect on the students’ reading comprehension. It could be seen from the steps or methods taken such as the teacher starting with greetings, praying, checking the attendance list, and conveying an outline of the scope of the material. Then the teacher gave a text according to the students’ abilities and desires such as narrative text. Next, asked students to read the text and then asked students to find out the extent of students reading comprehension. As it is known that many students were active when answering the questions of the English text. After that, the teaching-learning process ended by concluding and giving assignments to students. While the results of interviews of the students’ perceptions regarding the used of extensive reading in teaching reading comprehension have a good effect because most class IX students of SMPN 1 Pangale enjoy the learning-teaching process. This could be seen from the results of the interviews: First, most of the students agreed that extensive reading was effective to be applied in teaching reading comprehension. Second, increase students’ interest in reading and increase students’ knowledge of vocabulary. Third, extensive reading could increase students’ motivation to reading. Abstract

The purposes of this study were to determine the types of errors that Senior High School students make in pronouncing words silent letters and the causes that influence students to make errors in pronouncing words containing silent letters. The approach used in this research was qualitative descriptive. The research subject chosen by using purposive sampling technique were class XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Campalagian in the 2022/2023 academic year. The data were collected by test and interview, then analyzed it by using analytical technique of Miles and Huberman, namely by reducing data, displaying data and drawing conclusion/verification. The results of this study indicated that the types of errors made by students in pronouncing words containing silent letters exist two, Pre-systematic errors and Systematic errors. The results of this study also showed that the causes that influence students in made errors were the lack of experience of students in learning English, pronunciation viewed as one of difficult subject, influenced by the mother tongue and students learning model. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that there are still many students who made errors in pronouncing words that contain silent letters and do not understand how to pronounce the sounds of these words correctly.
