Abstract

This research aims at integrating Islamic Values into English material especially in basic competences 3.8 and 4.8 about Progressive Action for the eighth grade students at MTs Madani Pao-Pao based on 2013 curriculum. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found that the textbook that is used at school is too general and still far from the term integrated with Islamic values. The research design used in this study was Research and Development (R&D). The development model used was ADDIE model. It consists of need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The procedures included analyzing materials needed by distributing questionnaire to the students and analyzing the basic competences used, designing a blueprint of materials, and developing the English materials through ADDIE model. In this research, the expert was involved in order to validate the product. There were three systematic aspects that they validated of the product: the aspect of the content/material, the aspect of learning and the aspect of graphics feasibility. Therefore, the result indicated that based on experts judgment as well as product development result, the developed basic competences 3.8 and 4.8 was applicable to be taught at the eighth grade students of Junior High School as topics in English for them.

Abstract

This research focuses on the students’ writing skills in writing descriptive text. The purpose of this research were (1) To find out if the clustering technique is able to improve the students skills in writing descriptive text. (2) To find out to what extent clustering technique affects the development of the students skills in writing descriptive text. In this research, the population was the First Grade of Senior High School 10 Makassar consist of 15 students from X IIS 1. The method of this study was a Mixed Method, the design of this study was The Explanatory-Sequential (QUAN-qual) design where quantitative data were collected first. Pre-experimental method was applied in this research with a group pre-test and post-test design. The instrument used to collect data were writing test and questionnaire. The result of the research presented that the pre-test of the class got the mean score 40.33. After giving treatment the students got the the mean score 71.00. The outcome of the data analysis revealed that there was a significant improvement in the students’ skill in writing descriptive text after being taught using clustering technique. It can also be supported the strength of clustering technique, that is the students can generate their ideas in writing descriptive text. Subsequently, the result of one sample t-test where Sig. (2-tailed) = 0,000 < 0.05. Therefore, the null (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In addition, the qualitative result from the questionnaire showed there were 4 factors affecting the development of students’ writing skill in descriptive text, those are: teaching materials’ content, method in the teaching process, activities in the teaching materials, task given in teaching materials. Based on the result analysis, the researcher may conclude that using Clustering Technique was effective to improve the students’ skill in writing descriptive text because the learning objective was achieved, that was the students were able to write English descriptive text appropriately in English by following the generic structure and language features.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out students’ perception toward the use of blended learning. The research question of this research was “what is the students’ perceptions toward the use of blended learning in teaching English at the English Education Students in UIN Alauddin Makassar?”. The research sample and population are the English Education Department students with total number of populations were 98 students.This research applied a quantitative method with survey design, using total sampling where the data collected with online questionnaires. The questionnaires were formed by the researcher, using theories from some experts such as a theory about the learners’ knowledge by (Macdonald, 2008), a theory about the effectiveness of blended learning and theories about the benefits of blended learning by (Debra and John, 2010) and (Brown in Buket and Meryem, 2008). The data was analyzed by using the frequencies of Likert Scale and finding the mean score. The findings showed that the highest percentage of students’ response on the students’ perception toward the use of blended learning in teaching English was in the statement 9 namely “I like to learn at my own phase, that is why blended learning is interesting” with 82.24% which is from the effectiveness of blended learning, one of the aspects of question that are included in the questionnaires. And the lowest percentage was in the statement 18 namely “There is no difference between blended learning and any other methods” with 34.69% which also is the same aspect of question as the highest percentage, but was a unfavorable statement. Based on the research findings, the majority of students gave positive responses toward the use of blended learning in teaching English from the aspect of the effectiveness of blended learning itself and the mean score of students’ perceptions toward the use of blended learning was 3.47 which came from 67 positive responses.

Abstract

This research addresses issue of self-regulated learning in students writing performance for the fourth semester of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The research objectives are to find out the students’ who have Self-Regulated Learning in doing Writing Assignment for the fourth semester students’ of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar, and addition to find out do Self-Regulated Learning influence students’ Writing Performance in English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The method of this research used qualitative method. The subjects of this research were thirty two (32) students of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar academic year 2018 which taken by using purposive sampling. The data of this research is obtained from semi structured interview instrument with supporting data from questionnaire. The data analysis techniques in this research used three steps, i.e. reading/memoing, describing and classifying. The result shows that the experience Self-Regulated Learning can organize and control the learning schedule according to the priority scale and plan each learning activity where the student's metacognition will work when he obeys the plan he made. In self-regulated learning there is motivation in which students really need the role of motivation from both a person and the environment. With the existence of self-regulated learning and contributed learning environment can improve and structured learning outcomes behavior in order to get good achievement.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find the empirical evidence of the English summative test administered to the students for the seventh grade at Junior High School of Unismuh Makassar that is appropriate with the indicators of reading and writing skills in the English syllabus and has good content validity. The method of this research is descriptive research. The data was collected by observing and analyzing the English summative test. To know the content validity of the test, this research used the comparative analytic method, that is, by comparing the contents of the test with the English syllabus focusing on reading and writing indicators. The finding of the research was that the test items in the English summative test in the odd semester for the seventh grade students of Junior High School of Unismuh Makassar were appropriate with the recommended indicators in reading and writing skills in the English syllabus. They cover 11/18 x 100% = 61.11%. This percentage obviously falls into the level of 56%-75%, which means sufficient. This research proved that items of the English summative test for the odd semester of the seventh grade students in the Junior High School of Unismuh Makassar have sufficient content validity. It showed that most of the materials of the English summative test are appropriate to the recommended English syllabus referring to reading and writing standard competence.

Abstract

The research aimed to finding out the types of vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) used by students of SMK Negeri 4 Makassar, the differences of vocabulary learning strategies used by the students of SMK Negeri 4 Makassar based on their field of study, and whether or not the significant relationship between vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size of the students of SMK Negeri 4 Makassar. The research applied correlational research design. Three classes different from three majors; accounting, administration, and tourism, were chosen as the subjects of this research obtained through random sampling technique from the population that consisted of 156 students in the academic year 2016/2017. There were 82 samples in this research. The result of this research was accounting students used metacognitive strategies frequently (m=3.39), administration students tended to use determination strategies (m=3.32), and tourism students applied social strategies frequent (m=3.37), and (3) there was a significant correlation between students’ VLS and vocabulary knowledge based on result where r = .225 categorized as low degree of correlation and p = .042 where p<α (α=.05), it means H0 was rejected. Therefore, the result indicated that VLS used of students of SMK Negeri 4 Makassar had correlation with their vocabulary knowledge. The students used vocabulary learning strategies respectively from the most frequent to the least frequent; they are metacognitive strategies, determination strategies, social strategies, memory strategies, and cognitive strategies.

Abstract

This research was an experimental research. This research aimed to find out the improvement of students’ speaking skills with a research objective; to find out the improvement of Students’ Speaking Skills by using visual aids in the Second Year Students of the English Education Department State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar. The visual aids that the researcher used in this research were pictures and videos. This research was conducted at English Education Department State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar the second-year students. In this research, the population was 101 students in the second year of EED. The sample was 50 students. There were 25 students in EED A as an experimental group and 25 students in EED B as a control group. The instrument that the researcher used in this research to collect data were speaking tests. The data were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS 23.0 version. The findings of the research showed that the use of visual aids was able to improve students’ speaking skill in the Second Year Students of English Education Department State Islamic University of Alauddin Makassar.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the development of students' speaking after using the vlogging as medium in learning speaking skills on descriptive text material. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental group design. The population in this study were students of class X SMA-IT Al-Fityan School Gowa 2021/2022. The total number of students is 60 people. The sample was selected purposively, 15 students from Class XA were selected as the experimental class and 15 students from XB as the control class. The experimental class is taught by Vlogging. Both classes took Pre-Test and post-test. The instrument of collecting data is an oral test that focuses on describing one of the historical place. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental class learning achievements on the post-test. The mean score and standard deviation of the post-test in the experimental class were (M=11.73, SD=1.387). The results of data analysis indicate that the Vlogging technique has a contribution to improve students' speaking skills in descriptive text material. In implementing vlogging, the researcher found several benefits, the first being that students really enjoyed learning to use vlogging. second, students can used vlogging to demonstrate ideas and give students' creativity and thirdly in today's era students easily access the internet and can learn where and whenever they want. Based on the research findings, the researcher concluded that the use of Vlogging as a learning medium was significant to improve students' speaking skills, especially in descriptive text material.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the students’ vocabulary size taught by using Learn English with TV Series as a learning medium. The research method used in this research was pre-experimental with a pre-test and post-test group design. The sample was the class XII MIPA at SMAN 2 Maros consisting of 30 students selected using probability sampling with a simple random sampling technique. The instrument used were a multiple-choice, true-false item, matching test, and vocabulary level test. The collected data was then analyzed using SPSS. The result indicated that the average score of the post-test (90.40) was higher than the pre-test (49.97). It was supported by the one-sample T-Test where Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 < 0.05, which had a good and significant effect on students. The result of the vocabulary level test also indicated that the students at level 2000. Therefore, the students’ vocabulary size was increased using Learn English with TV Series YouTube Channel at SMAN 2 Maros.

Abstract

This research was conducted to develop English teaching materials for students based on the 2013 curriculum, especially on basic competencies 3.4 and 4.4 about Ordering, Invitation, and Asking for Permission, for the eighth-grade students at MTs Madani Pao-Pao. The researchers used R&D with the ADDIE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The types of data collection in this research were quantitative and qualitative. The researchers used questionnaires for students as instrument and used validation sheet for experts. The results indicated that the students' needs for English material of Ordering, Invitation and Asking for Permission unit are different, starting from the material organization, the content of the material and the characteristics of students. The English material used in madrasah is still general and it is not integrated with Islamic values. Therefore, "Let`s Break the Fast together" was chosen as the topic for the unit of Ordering, Invitation, and Asking for Permission based on the questionnaire. The product of English language material has been made and validated by the experts using a validation checklist, and the results of the validation checklist show that the material can be used as another references in learning Ordering, Invitation and Asking for Permission in junior high schools, especially in Islamic junior high schools. Therefore, the researchers recommend that the developed material can be used by eighth grade students in MTs Madani Pao-pao to improve their knowledge about Islamic phrases, and other researchers implement the product to evaluate its practicality and efficiency.
