Abstract

Heavy metal contaminants like mercury is a serious problem to human, animals, and some plants’ health. Phytoremediation is an alternative technique, which can remediate the contaminants from soil using a hyperaccumulator plant. The goal of this research was to study anatomical changes of plant main organs (roots, stems, and leaves) of  Ipomoea reptans which are assumed as a hyperaccumulator plant that grows in mercury contaminant. The mercury concentration of the growth medium was 0, 61.871, 92.258, and 107.046 ppb. Ipomoea reptans were harvested after 27 days. The anatomical changes of the plant’s main organs were observed by preparing the cross-section of roots, stems, and leaves of I. reptans. The result showed that mercury treatment has caused anatomical damage at the xylem vessel of the root, and decreased bulliform cell size. The anatomical damage was found only in the root of I. reptans. The mercury concentration in media decrease to 0 ppb (P0), 50,420 ppb (P1), 58,583 (P2), and 96,120 (P3).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to screen and to evaluate anticancer activity and apoptosis induction of Chromolaena odorata (C. odorata) leaves extract and its fractions on HepG2 cancer cell lines. The C. odorata leaves were extracted by maceration using ethanol 80% then fractionated by using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol. MTT assay method was used to evaluate anticancer activity and flowcytometri method used to evaluate the induction of apoptosis. The phytochemical analysis and  characterization of the major compound of the extract and the fractions were done by using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LCMS). The phytochemical analyis showed that the crude ethanolic extract and fractions of C. odorata leaves contains alkaloid, flavonoids, phenolic, steroids, tannin and saponin. The result of LCMS shown the major compounds of the extract and fractions are 5,7,8,3′,4′-Pentamethoxyflavonone, 1-Carboethoxy-β-carboline, 3-Methylcanthin-2, 6- dion, Canthin-6-one. In the n-hexane fraction obtained 5,7,8,3′,4′-Pentamethoxyflavonone, Methyl ophiopogonanone A and Pd-C-Ⅱ. Meanwhile, in the ethyl acetate fraction contained, 3-(3′,4′-Dihydroxybenzyl)-7-hydroxychroman-4-one, 3-(4'-Hydroxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8- methoxy-chroman-4-one, Methyl opiopogonanone A and Sinensetin. The ethanol fraction, contained the compound 3-(3′,4′-Dihydroxybenzyl)-7-hydroxychroman-4-one, 3-(4'-Hydroxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8- methoxy-chroman-4-one and Methyl opiopogonanone A. The crude ethanolic extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate and ethanol fraction extract have anticancer activities with IC50 value of 23.44 mg/mL, 84.52mg/mL; 88.51mg/mL; and 167.49 mg/mL respectively. This research suggests the crude ethanolic extract of Chromolaena odorata leaves has a potential candidate for hepatocarcinoma treatment.

Abstract

Kipas Merah Bireun is one of the superior soybeans which was once widely cultivated in Bireun Regency, Aceh Province, used to be as a centre of origin of Kipas Merah Bireun variety. The weaknesses of the Kipas Merah Bireun variety are relatively small seed size (dry weight 12 g/100 seeds), long harvest period and less resistance to drought stress. Therefore it is necessary to improve the quality of Kipas Merah Bireun variety soybeans in order to get soybeans with better properties, one way is to use mutation techniques. The objectives of the study reported here were to evaluate the genetic variability for seed size of single plant selection for large seed in the mutants of gamma irradiated population. The research successfully selected 41 lines soybean mutant with both of high weight seed per plant and large seed size. Several mutant lines of Kipas Merah Bireun were promising to be investigated and developed further in accordance with attempts to increase productivity in Aceh province. Therefore, further research is needed to see how the growth and production of selected mutant soybeans with large seeds in this study in various locations and planting seasons.

Abstract

Crocidolomia pavonana is an important pest of broccoli plants. Pest control is currently still using chemical pesticides that negatively impact the environment. It is hoped that Beauveria bassiana will become one of the environmentally friendly bioinsecticides. The research aimed to study the virulence level of conidia density of B. bassiana as a bioinsecticide against C. pavonana pests on broccoli plants. This experiment used a completely randomized design consisting of 5 treatments and four replications so that 20 experimental units were obtained. The Basic Plant Protection Laboratory and Plant Pest Science Laboratory Faculty of Agriculture, Syiah Kuala University as the research location, which was carried out from January to September 2021. The parameters observed were larval mortality, pupae formed, imago appeared, an incubation period of B. bassiana conidia, and average time of C. pavonana. The results showed that B. bassiana with conidia density of 108/mL distilled water was effective as a bioinsecticide against C. pavonana. The highest percentage of C. pavonana mortality observed at 6 Days After Application (DAA) occurred at a density of 108 conidia/mL of water (97.50%), and the lowest was at a density of 102 conidia/mL of distilled water (62.50%). The percentage of pupae formed was observed. At 7, DAA was 15% using a density of 102 conidia /mL aquadest. Produce 5%, a density of 104 conidia/mL of distilled water was used. The percentage of imago that appeared with a conidia density of 102/mL of distilled water killed at 14 DAA yielded 15%, and 5% resulted from a density of 104 conidia/mL of distilled water. The fastest incubation occurred at a density of 108 conidia/mL of distilled water with a time of 3.50 days. Death of C. pavonana at 3.03 days required conidia density of B. bassiana 102/mL of distilled water.

Abstract

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the education sector includes the learning system that cannot be conducted directly (offline). With the change in the learning system, it is necessary to evaluate whether the implemented online learning system can run well and provide results as expected. The level of student satisfaction is one of the factors that can be used to evaluate online learning. This study analyzed the student satisfaction level with online learning for the Mathematics Statistics II course at the Mathematics Department of Andalas University, related to service quality by lecture and the level of student understanding. Data analysis was conducted using causal modeling, namely Partial Least Square Structural Equations Modeling (PLS-SEM). By using The PLS-SEM, it is known that there is a significant and positive effect of service quality on student satisfaction in the Mathematics Statistics II course. In addition, the service quality also affects the understanding level significantly and positively. However, the level of student understanding has no significant effect on the level of student satisfaction. The coefficient of determination (R2) from the structural model of student satisfaction toward the Mathematics Statistics II course online learning is 0.774. This value indicates that the resulting model is good because it has relatively high accuracy.

Abstract

The objective of the current study is to evaluate and determine the effect of monomer concentration of ClAETA on the grafting copolymerization of oxidized cellulose which isolated from peel durian. Four concentrations of ClAETA were used in this study, e.g., 40, 50, 60, and 70%. Several analyses were performed to determine the material characteristic, e.g., degree of grafting, FT-IR, surface morphology, contact angle, degree of swelling, and antibacterial activity. The result showed, monomer concetration plays a significant role to the physical and surface morphology of DAC-ClAETA. The degree of grafting of ClAETA was found in the range of 15-31%, and at the concentration of 50% the grafted oxidized cellulose has 30.4% of degree of grafting. SEM images showed the pore volume has linear correlation to the monomer concetration, it increased the surface roughness. Also, the contact angle confirmed the hydrophilicity and degree of swelling of grafted oxidized cellulose was increase that linear to ClAETA concentration. DAC-g- ClAETA was found antibacterial active against S. aureus, S. epidermis, and C. albicans than DAC.

Abstract

Renewable energy has been in great demand by the public, even some countries have set regulations for substitution and transition from fossil energy to renewable energy. This study aims to modify the fuzzy control system with a metaheuristic method, namely fuzzy entropy. The entropy value of the fuzzy set in the previous stage becomes the basis for calculating the foot of uncertainty in the new fuzzy set. This process makes the entropy method parallel to other optimization methods that have been carried out on fuzzy control systems. The results obtained indicate that the modified fuzzy control system successfully controls the angle and angular velocity of the solar panel. The error value shown is very small and the time to reach stability is below 5 s. This is a rapid development of several previous studies. The modified system has no overshoot and steady state error below 1%. Based on these results, entropy research can be developed again by changing the fuzzy set to a more complex form.

Abstract

Heroes Park City Forest has  a high vegetation density in Purworejo Regency, Central Java province, absorbing and storing carbon from the atmosphere. This study analyzes the value of carbon stock, sequestration, and tree composition in the Heroes Park City Forest. Data collection was carried out in February 2021, using three randomly distributed 20 x 100 m plots. Analysis of carbon stock data, important value index, and diversity index was carried out quantitatively descriptively. The results showed that the carbon stock value of trees was 116.84 tons ha-1, which according to Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation or REDD+, was included in the high carbon stock category. The value of carbon sequestration in Heroes Park urban forest is 428.80 tons ha-1, which is higher than some city forests in Indonesia. The sampling location is covered with 157 tree species, dominated by Acacia auriculiformis, and has a moderate level of tree diversity. Vegetation dominated by Acacia auriculiformis from Fabaceae contributed 43 percent of the total carbon stock in Heroes Park. Abiotics such as rainfall, air temperature, and humidity in Purworejo City support the growth of plants from the Fabaceae. Therefore, Heroes Park City Forest in Purworejo Regency has high carbon storage or carbon stock and sequestration values and needs to be monitored annually to maintain this potential.
