Abstract

Feedback is one of the important elements of teaching and learning which aims to help learners to improve their quality of learning, including in writing activity. This research aims at conducting a library research on how teachers can give their effective feedback in writing classes. Several opinions by experts and previous research related to feedback for writing skills are compiled to provide some strategies that can be used by the teachers for giving effective feedback in writing activity. It is found that by considering the students’ need and purposes of writing, effective feedback that given by teachers can help the learners to know their level of proficiency and their weaknesses. By doing this, students can appreciate their own achievement and fix their weaknesses to make betterment in writing. Teachers can decide which certain kinds of feedback based on the writing purposes and the students’ needs. Therefore, by giving effective feedback, teachers are expected to encourage students’ motivation in improving their writing skills. And it is hoped that the further research will provide in information about oral and written feedback for writing activity.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the relationship between students’ motivation and their English learning achievement of the tenth grade students of a Senior High School. 100 students were randomly chosen as the sample to evaluate and determine the students’ motivation and their English learning achievement. A set of questionnaire consisting of 18 items was used in this study to see the correlation between the two variables. Pearson correlation and descriptive analysis were used in analyzing data by using SPSS version 22.0. Pearson correlation shows an average level of correlation between motivation and English learning achievement. The finding shows that there was a significant relationship between students’ motivation and their English learning achievement. The findings could be useful for researchers and teachers in improving students’ achievement by conducting effective teaching and learning strategies to develop students’ motivation.

Abstract

This research contains an analysis of grammatical differences in British and American English in the students’ Instagram accounts of the Nahdlatul Ulama University of Purwokerto (UNU Purwokerto). The purpose of this study was grammatical differences in British and American English that were used by students in developing writing skills. This study uses a qualitative approach using descriptive analysis methods. The sampling technique was carried out by means of purposive sampling of the captions used for English writing practice. The Instagram accounts were analyzed 50 students accounts. The results of this study are; (1) Grammatical Differences in British and American English, (2) The Using of Grammatical British English and American English on Caption Writing.

Abstract

This was a descriptive research project. The goal of this study was to find out how well students could write descriptive texts. The goal is to evaluate the pupils' abilities to write descriptive material. The study looked at five aspects of the students' writing. They're working on formulating ideas, organizing them, using syntax, vocabulary, and mechanics. In addition, there are five categories in which students' writing might be evaluated. Excellent, good, satisfactory, weak, and poor are the four options. The findings of this study concern text composition, the difficulty of performing well-organized writing, the processing of writing order, and language selection. They write the words that aren't appropriate. They use words that are inappropriate for the circumstance. It's all about the grammar here. The kids were grammatically correct. That is the present tense in its simplest form. The students can also put mechanics together well. In their writing, they are things like punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. It occurred as a result of the students' own lack of effort. The kids are aware of the rules of writing, but they are unable to apply them. As a result, the students' writing skills are still lacking.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how English educators in Indonesia feel about preparing higher-quality English teaching by performing an interlanguage analysis based on students' existing English language skills. Hence, this qualitative study was undertaken to evaluate the attitudes of 10 English educators in performing an interlanguage analysis. They were chosen specifically because they had prior expertise, ensuring that they were well-versed in the study's topic and that the data the shared would be clear. The research data were gathered by handing out semi-structured questionnaires to English educators. Despite certain particular and situational restrictions, the findings demonstrated that all English educators had a favorable attitude toward performing an interlanguage analysis of students' English ability from an emotional, behavioural, and cognitive perspective. This research is significant because it can guide English educators who want to enhance their teaching quality.

Abstract

The research aims to reveal the responses to English summative Mobile-Based assessment during the Study from Home period of the vocational school members of State Vocational School 1 of Banyumas in Central Java, Indonesia. This kind of Mobile-Based assessment was administered due to the circular letter about the implementation of National Education during the emergency of Covid 19. Therefore the school adopted the policy to carry out the summative assessment by using students’ mobile device at home. The participants of this study were the stakeholder (Vice Principal of curriculum), an English teacher, and three students. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. The data was transcribed (write down verbatim) and analyzed inductively. The data analyzed showed that the schools members responded to English summative Mobile-Based assessment positively, although there were some negative responses for certain cases. The findings are able to answer the research question which is dealing with the participants’ response. The participants gave various responses which are different from one another. Above all, in the conclusion the researcher could obtain the advantages and few disadvantages of the implementation of English summative Mobile-Based assessment.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the effectiveness of a local story entitled Babad Pasirluhur for teaching past simple and students’ voices on its usage. Therefore, the method employed was quasi-experimental research, and the instruments used were a multiple-choice item test and a closed questionnaire. The result revealed that Babad Pasirluhur story was effective to teach past simple because the value of Mann Whitney test result (97.5) was lower than Mann Whitney table (324). The significance level was 0.05. Furthermore, the result of the questionnaire showed that most of the students had positive responses toward Babad Pasirluhur. Overall, a local story entitled Babad Pasirluhur was effective to teach past simple, and the students mostly gave positive responses to the story.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of grammatical errors on Instagram captions written by K-Popers. The existence of social media has become a common communication among K-Popers national and international boundaries. Instagram is one of the social media platforms which has received a lot of attention from K-Popers. K-Popers usually upload their idols’ photos or videos on Instagram, and they usually use English as their caption to make it is easy to understand by K-Popers around the world. Through the English captions on Instagram, grammatical errors often occur in their English. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher chose the accounts from hashtag #kpopshoutout. The researcher had figured out the data which were posted on January to April 2021 from six K-Popers which have been chosen in the form of sentences on Instagram captions. Five K-Popers in different accounts which have been chosen by the researcher, they were: @jsoo.yaaa_, @do.exokyung, @bts.bighotofficial, @bts.bighitotfical, and @nutshell.skz.The researcher analyzed 50 captions from six K-Popers accounts. Based on the analysis result by using Dulay’s theory, there are four types of grammatical errors based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy, they are omission, addition, mis-formation, and mis-ordering. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that omission was the most type of grammatical error and addition was the least type of grammatical errors that the researcher found in this research.

Abstract

Ferdinand de Saussure effectively identified the way that language acts in both a diachronic and synchronic approach. The present work intends to demonstrate that de Saussure’s synchronic approach can be adequately applied to cultural constructs to enhance cultural dialogue and learning. Synchronic terms and general concepts will be applied to cultural terms and general concepts. The primary example used to develop this concept is the cultural construct of shame and its social expressions within the modern Chinese cultural context. First, Chinese culture will be established as a predominantly honor-shame culture and point to the common honor-shame aspects of patronage, kinship, purity, and tight culture. Then, specific examples of shame as it manifests itself within Chinese culture. These examples include the second-generation rich, leftover women, lying flat, and the general fear of losing face. The result is a rich and meaningful read on culture that will further dialogue and enhance cultural understanding.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to categorize the various figurative language that Audre Lorde employed in her poem From the House of Yemanjá. The study of figurative languages such as Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Simile, Metonymy, Synecdoche, Irony, Antithesis, Symbolism, Alliteration, Onomatopoeia, Litotes, Idiom, Allusion, and Paradox are the subject of this study. A content analysis strategy was employed in this study together with a qualitative methodology. The researcher served as the main analytical tool for figurative language. The results of the analysis showed that From the House of Yemanjá, a poem by Audre Lorde, employed figurative language (29) times. The researcher concludes that Lorde's use of figurative language to symbolize the sentences results in beautiful language. The majority of her poems discussed her past experiences, which were influenced by the history of prejudice against American-African women or black women.
