Abstract

Background: This study aims to discover the practice preparedness and dentists’ mental condition in Semarang during Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Method: This is an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional online study design. Subjects in this study is 171 members of persatuan dokter gigi Indonesia (PDGI) Semarang branch. Research subject was asked to fill questionnaire on practice preparedness during COVID-19 pandemic and depression anxiety stress scale (DASS-42) in Indonesian shared by researchers through Google form link. Data was analyzed using Spearman correlation, Mann-Whitney, and multinomial logistic regression tests.Result: Bivariate test result showed significant correlation between practice preparedness and DASS depression score (p =0.021 and r=-0.176) and anxiety DASS score (p=0.018 and r=-0.181). There was a significant correlation between training and DASS score depression (p=0.023), anxiety (p=0.025), and stress (p=0.040). Multinomial logistic regression multivariate test result depicted a significant relationship between training and moderate depression (p=0.04 and OR=5.65). Dentists with no training have a higher risk of 5.65 times on moderate depression compared to those with training during COVID-19 pandemic and infectious disease prevention and control training. Conclusion: The better practice preparedness, the milder depression and anxiety of dentists during pandemic. Practice preparedness does not affect dentists’ stress during COVID-19 pandemic. Training may also have an impact on dentists’ depression during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Background: Pulp tissue can regenerate if damage occurs. The pulp differentiates into new odontoblast-like cells in Progenitor cells. Nestin is a marker of the presence of new dontoblast-like and expressed in pathological conditions. Bovine's milk casein and lactoferrin contain proteins that accelerate cell growth. This study aimed to determine the effect of casein and lactoferrin on the expression of nested cells in the exposed dental pulp.Method: The research method is an experimental laboratory with male 30 Spraque Dawley rats. Rats were grouped as : casein, lactoferrin, casein-lactoferrin, and Ca-(OH)2. Each group consisted of 15 samples of molars which were divided into 5 samples of teeth for observation on the 7, 14, and 21 days. The first molars of rats were prepared until the pulp was exposed. The data of nestin quantity with immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis on histological preparations were analyzed using two-way ANOVA then the least significance difference (LSD) test.Result: The results of the average number of nested cells on 7,14 and 21 days were highest on combination of casein and lactoferrin. Two-way ANOVA statistical proved that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in each observation period and group and the number of expressions of nestin cells. LSD test showed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between groups compared to the control group. Conclusion: Combination casein and lactoferrin extracts affect the expression of the number of nestin cells as a marker of new odontoblast-like cells in the exposed dental pulp.

Abstract

According to Riskesdas 2018 the prevalence of dental and oral diseases in Indonesia is still high (57.6%) and the most cases are caries and periodontal disease. Periodontal tissue infection is a local oral infection that can be a focal oral infection, and has a risk of affecting systemic conditions. Microorganisms, toxins and inflammatory reactions in infected periodontal tissues can spread systemically to other parts of the body, thatcan cause infections in the area or worsen existing conditions. Systemic conditions that can be affected by periodontal tissue infections including coronary heart disease / arterosclerosis, stroke, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, chronic pulmonary obstruction, acute respiratory infections. The purpose of this literature review is to refresh about oral focal infection, as well as more convincing that periodontal infection was a risk factor for systemic conditions, in terms of inflammatory reactions.Influencing inflammatory reactions are inflammatory mediators, including interleukin (IL-1α, IL-β, IL-6, IL-8), tumor necotic factors (TNFα) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Biological mechanisms support the role of periodontal infection as a potential risk factor for a number of systemic conditions.Future multidisciplinary research should better illustrate the role of periodontal infections in systemic health, so that the influence between periodontal infections and systemic conditions such as premature LBW, diabetes, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases will be increasingly proven

Abstract

Background: ulcer is a pathological condition characterized by the loss of epithelial tissue. The average prevalence of ulcers in the oral cavity ranges between 15-30%. Paste of mangosteen rind which agent called xanthone can accelerate ulcer healing process, however histopathological observation of PMN (Polymorphonuclear) numbers and fibroblasts cells are required.Purpose: to determine the ability of mangosteen rind in treating ulcers caused by infection, mechanical and chemical trauma from the numbers of PMN and fibroblasts cells.Method: experimental studies, pre-posttest control group design, with randomized technique, total sample of 36 Male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups @ 6 where 3 treatment groups were smeared paste of rind mangosteen and the others without treatment, then from each group were decapitated onday 3rd, 7th and 10th. Result: Ulcer from mechanical and chemical trauma had been healing on 7th day compared with untreated on 9th day. Similarly ulcer infection has been healing on 9th day compared with untreated on 10th day. Anova test(repeated) shows that there is diameter difference significantly between day 1 to 8 (pvalue<0,001). The usage of xanthone decreases amount of PMN cells during inflammation phase and increases amount of fibroblast cells during proliferation phase. Conclusion: xanthone could accelerate healing process as well as shrinkage of ulcus diameter compared with untreated ulcer.
