Abstract

This paper attempts to describe the Islamic discourse echoed by the National Sharia Council (DSN) as an ideal solution in products/programs that are suitable in Islamic law, but in practice it becomes a sheath of domination that is accepted by the Muslim community as taken for granted. The practice of sharia discourse that create new capitalism occur in Banks Syariah, BPJS Syariah, and Cooperatives Syariah. The power relations of the National Sharia Council which claime sharia discourse as an ideal concept, behind which there are capitalist interests that are networked with non-sharia (conventional) products / programs. Through the power of the DSN as a knowledgeable authority, the Muslim community as a target began to hegemony over the sharia discourse, because the cult of the DSN represented the intellectual authority in Islamic law. Meanwhile, consumptive practices in the sharia discourse can be seen in the concept of sharia tourism, sharia hotels, and syar'i hijab. The syar'i hijab, which is the mainstay of capitalism in fashion products targeting the Muslim community, forms excessive consumerism in decoration (tabarruj) rather than the simplicity idealized in Islamic law (zuhud / asceticism). Ideal sharia practices and in accordance with Islamic law in economic terms can be echoed again through the maximalize management of Baitul Mal as an accommodating forum for Zakat Mal, Infaq, waqf and others.

Abstract

This research discusses the relation between Islam and the State among Muslim scholars. Many discuss the relation between Islam and the State from Sharia and historical viewpoints. However, this study examines the relation from education standpoint. The literature research looks at academic publications from prominent Muslim scholars around the world. This research asserts that the study on relation between Islam dan the State can be divided into three main categories: integrative, substantive and secular. In relation to education, those studies reveal that educational institutions attempt to align their teaching ideology with the ideology of its founder or stakeholders. Despite their significant differences, all Muslim scholars derive their thought and discussion from thelogical foundation of Al-Qur’an and Hadith. They also seem to show a common ground in defining Islamic Education. Nevertheless, Islamic education institutions present various views on teaching the ideology in relation between Islam and the State, from moderate teaching to radical teaching or understanding.

Abstract

The religious tolerance of the Dayak people towards converts in their families in Central Kalimantan shows that there are several problems which must be faced. Because apart from being a minority (Dayak converts), the Dayak people still uphold the culture that has been passed down from generation to generation. This study is conducted using a field study with purposive sampling on converts who are identified based on the specified classification. Data are reviewed through literature studies and strengthened by in-depth interviews, then analyzed using the Nvivo 12 application. This study reveals that in practice, the Dayak people uphold religious principles while maintaining tolerance as a habitus which comes from historical products by producing collective individual practices or behavior. Furthermore, religious practices, tolerance, and habitus play an important role in the daily life of the Dayak community towards converts. This is because they respect each other's beliefs, customs, and culture through a system of mutual assistance between one another in social interactions and everyday life. An open attitude and mind are also the reason for harmony in respecting differences and maintaining goodness among others, but not forgetting religion and culture.

Abstract

This paper aims to fill the gap in the study of tarekat (Sufi orders) and politics in Indonesia. It specifically wants to reveal the determination of the tarekat network and movement within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and their influence on the socio-political dynamics of this organization. The hypothesis that underlies this paper is that tarekat not only has religious potential, but also holds social, political, economic, and cultural potential. Socio-religiously, tarekat becomes a medium for instilling and transmitting religious values; it becomes a transmitter for ethical and spiritual values in society. Meanwhile, institutionally, tarekat is also a vehicle for articulating social interests and power. In this sense, the tarekat figures are not only active in religious activities but also able to form and be involved in the political arena. They created undercurrents to promote democratization and even collaborated with power holders to control political agendas and respond to socio-religious issues. The 2019 electoral political contestation shows that NU has succeeded in becoming the channel for democratic forces when competing with the forces of Islamism. Next, this study also indicates that the tarekat networks, as a force that can gather spiritual and political support, make NU a socio-religious organization that helps determine politics in Indonesia. Using Bourdieu's theoretical framework of social capital, this paper shows that the tarekat movement, as a religious institution in dialectic with social and political situations, will be primarily determined by habitus, capital, and arena. In general, these findings imply that the conception of tarekat often seen as apolitical mysticism needs to be reviewed and reconceptualized since, in fact, it is socio-politically relevant.

Abstract

The Neighborhood/Syuran tradition is not a mere socio-cultural phenomenon, but there is a deep philosophical meaning behind this annual event. The Banyumudal Panjer Kebumen Environmental Tradition places culture and local wisdom as the locus of faith in communicating with God. So that the actualization of culture is created that not only reflects syncretism and aculturalism but is also full of sacredness and nuances of Islam and faith. The encounter between Islamic values and local culture is evidence of a reception between religion and culture. This study aims to determine the process and results of the interaction between the teachings in the Qur'an and the culture of the Banyumudal Panjer Kebumen Society. This study uses a field research method, using Malinowski's theory of functionalism. Through this theory, researchers can uncover and examine more deeply the meaning and function of Syuran rituals. The results of this study show that 1) there are four forms of reception of the Qur'an in the environment/Syuran culture: symbolic receptions, historical receptions, aesthetic receptions and exegesis receptions. 2) Environment/Syuran is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines three important elements, namely religion, culture and economy. The integration of these three elements is represented by three important symbols of civilization for the people of Banyumudal, namely the triangle formed between the Environment/Syuran as a culture, the Banyumudal Mosque as a religious center and slaughtering chickens as part of the community's economy.
