Abstract

Eggs from commercial laying chicken are comestibles from animal source that are easy to deteriorate and rot in room temperature. Consequently, a method to improve eggs’ storage life is needed. Preserving eggs using Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) may be taken into consideration. This research aimed to identify the effects of VCO usage as antibacteria on storage life and quality of eggs of commercial laying chicken in Kupang district. Samples used were 63 eggs of commercial laying chicken aged 0 day from Candra Farm in Oesusu, East Kupang, Kupang District. Experiment design used was a completely randomized design with three repetitions. Preservation method, comprising 3 treatments which are non-VCO (T0), with VCO by smearing (T1) and by spraying (T2), in seven times observation, which were held on 10th day (P1), 15th day (P2), 20th day (P3), 25th day (P4), 30th day (P5), 35th day (P6) and 40th day (P7). Quality assessment of the eggs were organoleptic quality, physical quality comprising yolk index, albumen index, air sac depth, egg pH and microbiological quality determined from Total Plate Count (TPC). The results showed that VCO usage has a significant effect (P<0,05) on storage life and egg quality during the 40 day storage. Eggs treated with VCO has better storage life and better quality compared to those without VCO when saved in room temperature (28-32 oC). The Least Significant Difference test showed that there is no significant difference between eggs treatment with VCO by smearing and spraying (P>0.05). this means that both of the methods can be used to improve storage life and quality of the eggs. It can be concluded that eggs that are not treated with VCO are well consumed within 10 days, while eggs treated with VCO and stored in room temperature are safe to be consumed within 20 days

Abstract

Blood chemistry profile is one of the parameters that can be used to aid the diagnosis of a disease that involves damage in organs e.g. liver. Liver damage can be diagnosed by the examination of elevated liver enzymes such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The range of normal values of ALT and AST is required as a reference in the diagnosis, especially in bali cattle. East Timor is one of the distribution areas of bali cattle with a total population of 504974 cattles. This number has decreased from the previous year because of the many factors such as health problems. This study aimed to determine the range of the value of ALT and AST bali cattle in the district of Kupang and TTS based on gender and age ranges. The data obtained can be used as the reference value in the bali cattle in the district of Kupang and TTS. Samples were taken from 80 bali cattles (22 females, 18 males, 20 with age 2 years old or more, and 20 with age 2 years old or less) that were clinically healthy. Blood samples were taken through the jugular vein and assayed using MicroLab 300. The results were obtained using descriptive analysis SPSS 16. The results showed that the level of ALT and AST in bali cattles on East Timor have an average 36.45 (U/L) (±11.87) and 85.51 (U/L) (±39.11). Based on the results, the value of ALT and AST level of bali cattle in East Timor in May-June 2016 were not influenced by gender and age. The results provide a reference value normal blood clinical chemistry bali cattle on East Timor.

Abstract

This study investigated the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) population and the habitat condition currently located in the Monkey Cave Recreational Park in Tenau. The long-tailed macaques in Monkey Cave Recreational Park in Tenau were originally brought by the colonialists of the Netherlands as pets. The population was dispersed during World War II when Japanese imperialists invaded Timor island. The habitat of the macaque in Tenau has since been improved by the Tourism Office in cooperation with Kupang City’s Central agency of Forest Area Consolidation. In 1998 a land area of 0.8 ha was allocated to form a habitat for the long-tailed macaque population. Since the formation of this protected ecosystem, there has not yet been any research on the population and habitat conditions of the macaques. Data and information related to these animals can be useful to support management plans, especially for primate-based ecotourism development. This study aimed to determine the structure of these populations as well as the habitat conditions of long-tailed macaques in Monkey Cave Recreational Park in Tenau.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to compare the effect of the ethanol black sea cucumber (Holothuria leucospilota) extract with betadine in the healing wound process of incised skin of mice (Mus musculus) through observation of gross pathology and histopathology. This research used mice with age of 6-8 weeks, male and divided into three groups, which were negative control (aquades), the positive control (betadine), and the treatment (ethanol black sea cucumber extract). All mice were incised by surgical blade in the middle of the back with the depth of up to layer of dermis. Furthermore, the wounds were lubricated directly by aquades, betadine and ethanol black sea cucumber extract. The gross pathology data were obtained in eight days through the observation of color, dry cuts, the closing time, the scab formation and the increase the length of hair around and the wound size. The parameters used in histopathology analysis of healing wounds process were the presence of increasing number of cells fibroblast, angiogenesis, and the number of the inflammation cells around the wound. The results showed that the effect of ethanol black sea cucumber (H. leucospilota) extract accelerated the wound healing process in the incised skin of mice (Mus musculus). It was caused by the bioactive content of black sea cucumber, such as saponin, flavonoid, lectin and amino acids which can speed up wound healing wound.

Abstract

Snakewood’s active compounds have known to be potential as anti-plasmodium by the in-vitro study. However, the inhibition activity mechanism of snakewood active compounds against Plasmodium is not yet known. In this study, we determined the activity of snakewood’s active compounds by in-silico approach. Firstly, We identified the pharmacodynamic properties of snakewood’s active compounds, which are SA1, SA2, SA3, SA4, and SA5. Furthermore, drug-likeness and pharmacokinetic: absorption-distribution-metabolism-excretion (ADME) analyses were also carried out against snakewood’s active compounds to determine the most potential candidate for anti-Plasmodium falciparum drug. Molecular docking analyses using Plasmodium falciparum lactate dehydrogenase (PfLDH) enzyme against the active compounds were undertaken to observe their specific interactions. The result of molecular docking based on binding energy and inhibitory constant showed that SA3 (3-ethoxyacetophenone (C9H10O2)) active compound is the most potential inhibitor of PfLDH than others. It’s caused by the binding energy and inhibitory constant of SA3 lower than the other snakewood’s active compound. Therefore, SA3 can be a potential candidate for the anti-plasmodium agent.
