Abstract

Use of technology has become an important part of the learning process in and out of the classroom. Every language class usually uses some form of technology. Technology has been used to both help and improve language learning. Technology enables teachers to adapt classroom activities, thus enhancing the language learning process.Technology continues to grow its importance as a tool to help teachers facilitate language learning for theirlearners. It discussed different attitudes which support English language learners to increase their learning skills through using technologies. This can make students passionate about accepting the material delivered by educators so that the effectiveness of learning can be achieved. And can making Classroom fun and not boring when we use technology in study and activities in classroom and Kahoot is present as a learning application to foster motivation and enthusiasm for learners to create conducive classroom conditions for the achievement of the effectiveness of learning.Use of the Kahoot platform used was very suitable to be used in creating interactive and fun learning.

Abstract

It has been being debatable issue for very long time, the early starter verseus late starter in the second language acquisition. Some researchers assumed and found that the early starter can acquire language better than the late starter, because they are in the critical period. While, some researchers found that the late starter can acquire and perform the new language better than the early starter, because they have better ability in understanding some aspects of languages. Therefore, this current paper concerned to find any factors influence someone in acquiring the second language acquisition. This study involved nine International students who are studying in Hungary, they started learning and acquiring Hungarian language when they have passed their critical period. This current study found that the age is not the only main factor in acquiring the language, but there are some other factors, including the society, access to the language, attitude toward language, love, and friendship/relationship.

Abstract

The use of media such as on-line media “The Jakarta Post” newspaper can support teachers and students in teaching English process. It will improve the students ability, skill, knowledge, attitude , language content, reading and vocabulary by providing on-line media ”The Jakarta Post “newspaper . The purpose of using on-line media can be used by the students in the classroom to develop their skill and also used as the learning resources. Teaching English to Government Program has many problem. Commonly the students lack ability in English because of education background and at this program English as Compulsory Subject. At STISIP NH Jambi learning English as Compulsory Subject (MKDU) mata Kuliah Umum. Based on Curriculum the students must follow the English Subject. In teaching process many students lack of ability in English. The students knowledge as long as Junior and Senior High School give the impact of teaching process. The writer for this paper would like to share the information , experience and the way to teach English as a compulsory Subject . The existence of On-Line Media The Jakarta Post for the Government Program. The writer do the technique observation( do direct observation of the students as the object), interview, documentations and library research. The result of the research showed that: The continuously of learning English by using on-line media must be formed to reach the target of mastering English and the students of English Program must relay that the existence of English for Government program must mastery English to can compete in employment field.

Abstract

The use of Google translate (GT) for English assignments is now inevitable. Teachers neither can prevent their students to use GT nor can supervise it since all of the learning process has been running online from home to home. Therefore both teachers and students should bring out the advantages of GT to improve English competence and to reduce the disadvantages of using GT. This study is aimed to investigate the learners’ perspectives of using GT for doing English assignments and to describe the advantages and disadvantages of GT. The study is presented in descriptive qualitative design. The data collection instruments are questionnaires and interview. The participants are 198 students of Information system department, University of Putra Indonesia YPTK Padang. The findings of this study showed that for about 80% of English learners depend their English assignments on GT. Based on the learners’ perspective, the advantages of using GT are time saver and instant results and the disadvantages of using GT are inaccuracy in the results relate to cultural context, idiom, sentences with metaphor and pragmatic aspects and laziness for learning the structure of English language. The study also came with the solution to eliminate the disadvantages of using GT.

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of social media on the student’s academic achievement. The survey research method was used. Subjects were drawn from the second year students of Elementary Teacher Education Department in STKIP Muhammadiyah Muara Bungo The researcher adopted Kendall’s coefficient of concordance and factor analysis as analytical tools for the study. A survey design provides a quantitative description of the population that is sampled through the data collection process. The study also employed the questionnaire as the data collection instrument for the study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data collected. The descriptive analysis tools in the SPSS were employed to develop tables and frequencies which were constructively analyzed. The result revealed that majority of respondents used whatsapp and facebook to find new friends and application for communication. Furthermore, majority of respondents experienced negative effects such as late submission of assignment, less study time and poor academic achievement due to the heavy participation on social media networks. Therefore, there were cases where others experienced improvement in their reading skill as a result of participation on social media networks. Also respondents shared ideas, discussed and shared examination among them on social media network.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to know the students’ speaking ability by implementing Talking Football Game at second semester English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung. This research was experimental research called One-Shot Case Study which used one class as the sample. The population of this research was second semester English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung registering in 2014-2015 Academic Year. The data of this research were collected by using oral test. The data were analyzed by t-test formula. From the calculation of the result of the test, it was indicated that tcalculate was 3, 22 and ttable 2, 02 with a = 0,05. So, it means that tcalculate was greater than ttable and the hypothesis was accepted. The result of this research showed that Talking Football Game increase students’ speaking ability. It implied that Talking Football Game could be used as a technique of teaching speaking ability at second semester English Department students of STKIP Dharma Bakti Lubuk Alung year of 2014-2015.

Abstract

The present paper reviews The Oxford Handbook of Language Attrition edited by Monika S. Schmid and Barbara Köpke (2019). The book is the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive account of the phenomenon of language attrition. It includes numerous experts in the field offering unique insights into the topic from various perspectives (linguistic, psycho-neurolinguistic, and sociolinguistic) so as to give the reader a holistic view and understanding of exactly how the phenomenon takes place and what different factors influence its occurrence and development. The book also draws on previous studies as well as other fields to present a guideline for future research

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe what are students’ need in their effort to learn English at Al Baqiyatus Sholihat Islamic Boarding School. This research was descriptive quantitative research. The subject of this study were 180 respondents. The finding of the data showed that most of students have been learning English for 1,5 and they only learn English at Islamic boarding school and no one of students learn English outside of the school. Based on students attitude towards their English language learning, the majority of students learn English because they want to pass the exam (78.33%) and they can use internet better (75.00%). Based on students’ English language skill, the researcher found that listening (87.22%) became students’ favorite skill and reading (72.2%) became the difficult skill or the skill that students need to more practice. Refers to the way student learn that most of students like to learn English by working as a whole class (92.22%) and reading text/stories (78.33%). Students like to learn vocabularies by hearing new words (81.67%) then, students learned grammar by doing written exercise at school (75.00%) and by oral practice in class (63.89%). Refers to the English favorite topic that most of students like the topic such as family/friends/people/relationship (93.89%) and they like the topic that related with Islam knowledge.

Abstract

In accordance with the title of classroom action research, the subjects of the research are class VIIIA students of SMP Negeri 3 Muara Bungo in the even semester of the 2018/2019 school year, some of whom have more abilities and others have medium average abilities. The learning process in the first cycle using the Example Non example model, media pictures, a puzzle words and a lottery boards in making recount text has not been able to improve student learning outcomes, because only 56.25% or 18 students succeeded. However, in cycle II it can reach 81.25% or 26 students who are successful and there is an increase to reach 37.5%. Therefore, it can be said that using 2 cycles in this Classroom Action Research (CAR) to improve student learning outcomes, the average value of students with success criteria is > 5.6.
