Abstract

This study seeks to determine the types and frequency of tactics employed by teachers in teaching English speaking. This study focused on the English instructors in Jambi. The data was qualitatively examined. The findings revealed that the teachers employed four distinct tactics. These were enhancing student discourse, developing role play, developing narratives, and training interviews. In teaching English as a second language, role-playing was the most prevalent approach employed by teachers. Teachers determined that by implementing the developing role play technique, pupils became more active and confident when playing a role based on the materials provided by the teachers. In addition to making students more passionate about learning English, role-playing encouraged them to engage in more conversation with their classmates and peers. Keywords :Analysis, Strategy, Public Speaking

Abstract

Literature and culture are two elements that cannot be separated as overall general knowledge. Thus, it is evident that EFL learners are suggested to learn literature and study it when learning English as a foreign language. This is due to the reason that literature can be used as motivating material that is represented in the value listed in the story. Clearly, literature is able to provide EFL students access to other people whose language they are studying. Unfortunately, research shows that teachers in high school find it difficult and seems boring to teach literature in the EFL classroom. Thus, this paper is aimed to show several strategies that EFL teachers might use to teach literature in their classroom as part of a genre-based approach application. The strategies are divided into pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity.

Abstract

The research on the fifth-grade students of SD Negeri 093 Sungai Abang Village was driven by the researchers’ desire to enhance students' learning outcomes, especially in the subject of English. The researcher's findings indicated that the average student achievement scores were still low, below the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) set by the school. Out of a total of 12 students, only 2 students or 16.7% reached the KKM. As an alternative solution to this issue, the researcher conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) by implementing the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) method. The research was conducted in the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic year, involving 12 students. The data analysis results from Cycle I showed that the average class score had reached the KKM, with 9 out of 12 students (75%) reaching the KKM. Students' learning outcomes improved in Cycle II, where almost all students, 11 out of 12 (91.7%), reached the KKM. This research demonstrates that the use of CTL was appropriately applied in English language learning, particularly in the material taught in the higher grade levels as the subject of the research.

Based on the paired sample t-test table, the t_count value is 30.797, this t_count value can be compared with t_table with dk = (N-1) so (28-1) = 27 at a 5% significance level, namely 2.056. Which means H_0 is rejected and H_a is accepted. So the hypothesis states that "there is an effect of using sociodrama-based Project Based Learning on Javanese language learning in class V SD Negeri Sambirejo Surakarta Academic Year 2022/2023" can be stated as true.

Abstract

The TOEFL test is globally acknowledged as the foremost assessment tool for evaluating English proficiency levels (Warfield, 2013:133). This study explores the English department students' readiness for the TOEFL examination, with a specific focus on 4th-semester students enrolled in the TOEFL preparation class at STKIP MB. An observed issue pertains to reading comprehension difficulties encountered by students in this class. This difficulty primarily stems from the complexity and length of the texts, making it challenging to grasp the core ideas. Furthermore, students have been exposed to Academic Reading and Extensive Reading prior to the advanced Reading (TOEFL reading) section. This context demands specific skills such as extracting key ideas from passages, addressing direct and indirect questions, and enhancing vocabulary (Phillips, 2001). This research identifies a link between reading comprehension and reading techniques. Patel and Jain (2008:80) distinguish intensive, extensive, Aloud, and Silent reading techniques, with students struggling to maintain focus and comprehend texts effectively. Inefficient strategies often lead to time-consuming responses to reading comprehension questions. Another significant hurdle is that students tend to read passages word by word, hindering their ability to retain information. Harmar (2018:25) aptly notes, "Reading is an exercise dominated by the eyes and the brain," emphasizing that reading serves as a medium to obtain information and understand the meaning of text. However, the reality reveals a deficit in understanding words or sentences in English among some students, indicative of inadequate reading comprehension and limited vocabulary. This research also highlights the challenges faced by college students preparing for TOEFL, wherein tests exhibit varied formats, making them significantly different from typical assessments. The abundance of seemingly correct answer choices often perplexes students, leading to confusion and inconsistency in selecting the right answers. Furthermore, the students frequently grapple with tense usage and vocabulary limitations in the English language. Notably, reading comprehension consistently emerges as the lowest-scoring section in the TOEFL test. In conclusion, this study aims to address the reading comprehension difficulties encountered by STKIP MB 4th Semester Students in the TOEFL preparation class. By examining the correlation between reading techniques, comprehension strategies, and vocabulary enhancement, the research strives to provide effective solutions to improve TOEFL reading scores and overall English proficiency among students.
