The article highlights one of the local wisdoms of the ethnic Lio Mego, namelyloka po’o. The tradition is a ritual for the fertility of the soil. Loka po’o offers a meaningful value when people have been discussing about ecology. In the ritualloka po’o, the Lio Mego are convinced that the nature is just a reflection of the Highest Reality. The nature has a soul, namely the anima which is supposed to be preserved and not to be exploited blindly. Human beings are participating in the nature. Abstract

Based on his personal experiences in North Sumatra, the writer offers in this article some insightful ideas in doing mission and being missionary crossculturally. First of all, every missionary should realise himself as guest in any mission field. What is important for a guest is just learning to know the local people and their cultural values. As a Divine Word Missionary, the writer underlines the legacy of St. Arnold Janssen, the founder of the Society of the Divine Word, namely interculturity. Internally, members of the Society are united from various ethnic groups, languages, and cultures into a fertile and dynamic community. Externally, everybody has been trained and conditioned to be able to adjust himself into any new cultural milieu. Involve in mission such as in North Sumatra, every new missionary is expected to open himself to the Batak culture. To be a good missionary among the Batak, then, one must know quite well the Batak cultural values and speak their language. There is no other strategy for being a good missionary, namely a good preacher, than to first of all be a good learner, a good disciple. That is what exactly means an intercultural person.

Abstract

Identification of a group of people does not come out of the blue. There is a long history and a lengthy process which makes a group identity comes up. In Indonesia, the ethnic Chinese, formerly called ‘orang-orang non-pribumi’ (nonnatives, immigrants), are one of many groups of people with their ambiguous identity. Such ambiguity of the ethnic Chinese remains so up to the present day, even though the term ‘Cina’ has been altered into ‘Tionghoa’’.Their presence has been considered as ‘the others’ amidst the people of the country and their identity as ‘immigrants’ has been perpetuated. Nobody knows when such stigma will be over. Although they have been in the country for generations, their status as ‘immigrants’ seems unchanged. The article tries to explore the background of the natives-immigrants stereotype and the discourse on ethnic Chinese identity in the post-Soeharto era.

Abstract

The writer tries to analyse the encounter between Christian faith and the local culture particularly that of Muna culture of Southeast Sulawesi. Formerly the missionaries seemed to come in with their particular theological framework, while the local people live in their inherited way of life and traditional rites, such as worshipping their ancestors, ritual to sacred places, etc. The missiological challenges would be, how the Christian faith could be accepted fully by the local people and the Christian values could also support the dynamic of the local culture. The answer would be openness of both sides. From the Church’s side, it is actually a challenge in fostering contextual theology, particularly following the anthropological model. Opennes to learn the richness of the local culture is jus a must.

Abstract

The term ‘Islam Nusantara’ (Archipelagic Islam) has been used not only to cover the Indonesian territory but also the neighboring countries. The term contains humanistic values and humanism, people in humane face, tolerance and moderate. All this reflects Islam as religion of peace. Besides it could contribute for promoting humanistic values as well as peace in the world.Such humanistic appearance of ‘Islam Nusantara’ adapts local genius of the country and highly regarded traditions of the local peoples before the coming of Islam. This accommodation could avoid any kind of both physical and verbal violences from the society and keep the people away from any possible harmful act toward their neighbour.

Abstract

Diverse ethnic, religion, race, and culture have often been the reasons that people could not live side by side in harmony. The Nation-State of Indonesia founded on Pancasila as its way of life and ideology, seems to be in crisis. Some particular group, emerges from within Moslem society, makes any effort to found a state on the basis of Syariah Law. On the other hand, during his life time, the Prophet Mohammed seemed to praise highly the plural society. Even in Madinah he was struggling to protect peoples from diverse backgrounds. For the writer, Pancasila and the Madinah Charter could meaningfully have similar role for any plural society.

Abstract

A struggle to live out Pancasila appropriately has always to face other ideologies which in a way wants to substitute it. As the ideology of the people of the Republic of Indonesia, Pancasila has always been shakened by diverse movements for the sake of certain, particular groups. One of such groups is the socalled radical-fundamentalist Islamic movement. It has struggled to erect the syariah law in place of Pancasila. The writer tries to analyse philosophically this movement, while his position is on the other side, namely to put diversity forward as the constitutional basis of the Nation-State of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

The encyclical letter Ecclesia de Eucharistia of Pope John Paul II,which states that the Church lives from the Eucharist, is the essence of the mystery of the Church. The faithfuls live from the Eucharist where Christ himself is present and sacrifices himself for human beings. Thus, the Eucharist is the heart of the life of the Church. Eucharist as communion signifies that it creates a brotherhood and communion among the faithful, who shall be stated in brotherhood with other fellows outside the Church. The Eucharist as memorial signifies that the memories of the work of God’s redemption in His son, Jesus Christ, are actualized here and now so that the work of salvation presented in the Eucharist should energize the daily life of the faithful. Eucharist as celebration of life indicates that the work of the loving God given to mankind invites people to celebrate it along with others who do not know Christ. The mission dimension of the holy Eucharist means that the work of salvation must be carried out by every Christian throughout the world.

The concept and understanting of marriage in Christianity (Catholic and Protestant churches) based on the marriage of the couple that cannot be separated. Yet the approach of moral influence how the marriage application should eventually divorce. Moral approach is input for each of the Church, considering a case by case basis, so that marriage law should be able to answer in a new language and relevant to the context at hand. Dialogue to discuss and share about the application of this moral approach is treasures in the Church of Christ. This wealth should be marked humility, a willingness to learn from each other and away from judgment. Each party must have the humility to be amazed by the other as a gift from God, which sometimes are not discussed in detail by each church. The dialogue on the concept of marriage is indissoluble, reinforces the identity of each church without fear of being threatened by the other. The laws are not seen normatively but in situation of compassion and deep meaning.
