Abstract

The world of facebook is the social phenomena of life in this era. Facebook does not only build a fraternal communication, but also has become a social problem. This essay tries to comprehend the dialectic phenomena of facebook from the phenomenological perspective of Peter L Berger. Berger perceives facebook as a dialectic process between the creator and the user of facebook or between the positive communication and the negative one. He looks into facebook in a systematic way with regard to dialectic relation between the structural fact and human act in reality. For Berger, facebook shows itself to the subject as it is, genuine, authentic, and there is no falsity. On the other hand, the user of facebook could exploit negatively for spreading hate. Dialectic of thefacebook world is exactly the social dynamic of our modern world.

Abstract

Malang is a city which is always on its development. As the city is developing, so the life of the church is also ever-changing. The question would be: “Is the change of Christian faith on its way for better or for worse?” The writer tries to discern the question through field research among the faithful Christians in the city. As the sample, the writer has chosen a group of Christians within St. Andrew Parish, namely the St. Paul neighbourhood. The findings have been reflected referring to some source books as well as Church’s documents and lay spirituality. The writer concludes that involvement of lay people has great contribution to, even determines the whole life of the church.

Abstract

The youth of today is living in a so-called urbanized culture. This kind of culture is present everywhere, spreading along the time, and arrives to the city of Malang as well. With its counterpart, popular culture, it gives way for both positive and negative impacts, which are very challenging for the youth.This young generation, the future of the church and of the society at large, is expected very much but not without anxiety. The writer assumes that the coming of new culture such as urban culture, globalization, and all kind of development dan progress provides the youth, on the one hand, an opportunity to find out and elaborate their individualistic identity and, on the other, a crisis in their faith. The article then tries to work out these two opposing sides of life, the spiritual aspect and the physical one.

Abstract

Christian families have the task and demand to carry out, namely to make into practice or to realize Christian values within the families and the society at large. At the present time, modernity with all its impact has penetrated the very core of the society, particularly the families. This is practically a great challenge for Christian families, on the one hand to internalize Christian values and, on the other hand, to give some impact to the society. This research investigates the impact of modernity to Christian families in the city of Malang. The article then tries to encourage Christian families to be more open to this present trend and be wiser in coping it as a new field of their mission. The Christian families are expected to be able to actualize their faith in a new way within this new era.

Abstract

As a historical civilized city which has developed towards an urban city. Malang is the focus of this article. The writer found out that Malang of today has shown its new face as an urbanized one which has offered a new kind of life values. He calls it the ‘face’ of an urban culture. He argues then that the new phenomena of Malang ought to be continuously imbued by the ‘spirit’ which has traditionally been well-known in the watchword of Malangkuçeçwara. From the Christian perspective, the spirit that has to be promoted is the Spirit of Christ, the ‘Urban’ as such. The society of urban Malang, particularly the Christian community is expected to let itself be animated by this ‘Spirit’ which is the source of the dynamic of urban life. The writer concludes that the urbanized city of Malang for the Christians is the very locus of pursuit and encounter with Christ, the Urban.

Abstract

The long history of journalism is in line with the progress of the concept of public sphere. This artidle tries to analyse the public journalism using Jürgen Habermas’ idea on the ontology of public sphere, the history of press, and the relation between public sphere and press. This research was carried out using the bibliographical study on journalism and public sphere. The findings show that the concept of public in the public sphere is quite different from the one in history. The writer finally found out the concept of public sphere which is in accordance with our contemporary concept. Public sphere in Habermas’ opinion has two forms: public sphere in politics and in literature. With these two concepts, the writer will explain the connection between public sphere and press in Habermas’ opinion in such a way that finally came out the concept of public journalism.

Abstract

The theme of power is always relevant for our discussion. Understanding the face of power, however, tends to change from time to time. In this modern age, with the development of technological devices, power has undergone a shift of understanding as well. Power is not only in the real world, but also runs in the cyber world by certain parties. Manipulation of power, as initiated by Michel Foucault, is increasingly prevalent in the cyber world. Through the cyber world, the governmental institutions in power are increasingly sophisticated. Power is increasingly difficult to identify the shape and face. Who is the master of technology, he is the one who has the power, he is the new ruler. The manipulation of the truth of knowledge produced by the rulers is also the more we receive. The rulers are regarded as the true source of knowledge, although knowledge is a lie or a manipulation. The writer argues, in order to build a good power, it takes the spirit to escape from instant culture and to foster an integral spirit in the social media that includes the environment, social and spiritual realm.

Abstract

The focus of this article is the problem of identity of the Catholics in the urban city of Malang. Based on observation and discussion with the Catholics in the St. Christophers’ neighbourhood, St. Vincent de Paul Parish of Langsep, has come up to an idea that people in the city are individualistic. The writer presumes that today globalization of the cities affects the way of thinking of the Catholics. The people practice their religious duties as far as such activities do not disturb their business. On the other hand, the spirit of urban societies is so dynamic in line with the spirit of the times. Every citizen seems to be motivated by the condition to adapt him-/herself within the progress of the age. In this urban rhythm the Catholics in the neigbourhood feel oblige to protect themselves from these influences and then strive to keep themselves away from the noise of the city. As the minority group, they seem to be reluctant to associate with the majority, since it may disturb their comfort. This is practically their challenge, how to open their exclusiveness and build a communio of the faithfuls who go forth and engage in dialogue with people of other faiths dan with the local culture.

The yout his the future of the nation, the state, and the church. Meaning, the presence of this generation is expected to offer a great impact for the whole society (nation, state, church). In Malang, the second largest city for students after Yogyakarta, there are plenty of youth. They come into the city from all parts of the country for higher education.The considerable amount of this generation in the city gives a great contribution for the church in particular. This article tries to explore their contribution, especially those who are Catholics, for the missional life of the church in the city.
