Abstract

Both the Islamic and Catholic Scriptures speak about Jesus. They recognize Jesus as the revelation of God’s Self to humans. However, Islam only recognizes Him as an ordinary human being, while Catholicism recognizes Him as truly God and truly human. Why do these two major religions (Islam and Catholicism) have different views about Jesus? The Qur’an says that Jesus was not the third Person of the Trinity, not the Son of God, and was not even a god. Islam believes that Jesus was just an ordinary man. Al-Ghazali added that God is perfect in Himself. The nature of humanity cannot be united like divinity. Catholicism recognizes Jesus as truly God and truly human. The explanation of the doctrine can be found in the description of the historical Jesus and faith. In Christian faith, Jesus was historically believed to be both God’s revelation of himself and human’s response to this revelation, through the event of the Incarnation. The mystery of Incarnation shows that God loves human beings. The article argues then that only through this mystery of Incarnation in Jesus, one could approach God who is beyond human understanding.

Abstract

The focus of this article is to compare the religiosity of St. Teresa of Avila and Candi Borobudur in achieving unity with the divine. The purpose of this analysis is to understand the concept of religiosity that is stored in the Borobudur temple and in the reflections of Theresa of Avila. Through a comparative methodology, the writer tries to compare the thoughts of both sides to find out their similarities and differences. The findings then reveal that there are several differences between them. These differences include the concept of God and the symbols they use. Through the inner castle,Teresa of Avila teaches that pilgrimage in human life are directed to God. While the Borobudur Temple does not explain that humans in their existence on this pilgrimage are directed to achieve unity with God. The similarity of both sides presents that unity of the people and the divine is the peak of human pilgrimage.

Abstract

The Mee tribe in Papua has an emawa owaada philosophy of life. These two words (emawa meaning house; owaada meaning garden, field) have a living symbolic meaning. Emawa is defined as the house of truth, a place for people to get education, build relationships with others, and be grateful for life. Owaada is a symbol of mother who gives life. In this article the authors try to reflect on the philosophy of emawa owaada in the light of Christian theology, especially the theology of koinonia (communion) which culminates in the celebration of the holy Eucharist. As the Mee people are ‘called home’ to warm themselves, dialogue, exchange ideas, share life and give thanks to Ugamate (the Holy One), so the Church invites people to come together in communion to share life and give thanks to the Almighty and Living God. The authors argue that the path to true inculturation is still a long way to go, but the possibility is very open.

Abstract

This article attempts to interpret the weaving culture of Sikka-Maumere, Flores, in a Christian way. First of all, the weaving tradition is described as a cultural heritage which has social, economic, artistic and religious meanings. It takes a long process and involves many people to create this beautiful woven cloth that is characteristic of the local community in Sikka-Maumere. The process of working on it and its completion can be interpreted in a Christian way, especially from the perspective of an ecclesiastical community. Like the work of weaving, life in an ecclesiastical community requires integrated cooperation between the various parties and a constructive rigor, because the life of an ecclesiastical communion can be compared to the work of weaving. All members of the Church are called to share in this work of weaving together with the main weaver, namely the Lord God Himself.
