This journal gives readers the state of art of the theory and its applications of all aspects of fisheries and marine science. Abstract

Highlight Research Research on pirik endemic fish (Lagusia micracanthus) was first conducted in the Gilireng River. Based on the length-weight relationship, the growth type of pirik fish in the Gilireng River is isometric. The average size distribution, total length, and body weight of female fish were greater than those of male fish though not statistically significant. The Gilireng River water conditions are sufficient to support the growth of endemic pirik fish. Abstract Lagusia micracanthus or locally known as pirik fish and is the only endemic freshwater fish from the family Terapontidae. To date, published information related to biological aspects of this species in the Gilireng River, Arajang Village, Wajo Regency, is unavailable. This study aims to determine the length−weight relationship and condition factors of L. micracanthus fish populations in the Gilireng River. Fish sampling was performed once a month January 2022 to June 2022.The fish collected from Gilireng River comprised 69 male and 66 females during the study period. Pirik (L. micracanthus) in the Gilireng River demonstrated nearly an isometric growth pattern. Condition factor values ranged from 0.6455 to 4.3239, and the average condition factor values for female fish were smaller than male fish. The result of this study has contributed to the knowledge of the endemic pirik fish population in the Gilireng River that could assist fishery management scientists in conducting studies on the management of these fish.

Abstract

Highlight Research This is the first study of microplastics in four beach sediments in the east part of Java Island. Bahak and Pesona Beach are connected to Java Sea (north part), while Tambak Rejo and Balekambang Beach are connected to Indian Ocean (south part). A higher microplastics were observed on the beaches of the north part compared to the south part. Local sources and oceanographic parameters of the beaches influence the presence of microplastics in the study areas. Abstract Microplastic pollution in beach sediments has been studied intensively worldwide, but there are limited studies in the beach areas of the eastern Java Island, Indonesia. This study aimed to identify the distribution of microplastic in four beaches in Indonesia: Bahak, Pesona, Tambakrejo, and Balekambang. The first two beaches are located in the north of Java Island and influenced by the east Java Sea, while the last two are located in the south and influenced by the Indian Ocean. Sediment samples were collected along the strandline inside the 1 í— 1 m transect quadrate in the top 5 cm using a stainless-steel shovel. Microplastic and granulometry analyses were conducted to obtain microplastic and sediment grain size data, respectively. Physical parameters of the beaches, such as wind, wave, and ocean current, were calculated using Copernicus and NASA (PODAAC), respectively. The total abundance of microplastic ranged from 54.7 ± 48.6 to 103.3 ± 4.7 particles kg-1 with the following descending order: Bahak > Pesona > Tambakrejo > Balekambang. Although there was no statistically significant difference in microplastic concentrations among the beaches, the beaches connected to the Java Sea accumulated more microplastics than the ones connected to the Indian Ocean. Fiber and blue were the dominating type and colors of microplastic. The results confirm that the distribution of microplastic is associated with the morphology of the beaches and the local source.

Highlight Research The optimal condition for production of water-soluble collagen from Alaska pollock fish skin was the pretreatment with 0.15 M acetic acid followed by hydro-extraction at 40oC with 150 rpm for two hours. Higher acetic acid concentration at a pretreatment step enhanced the higher yield of water-soluble collagen via hydro-extraction process. Hydro-extraction was an environmentally friendly method for converting Alaska pollock fish skin to water-soluble collagen. Alaska pollock fish skin could be used as an alternative source for collagen production. Abstract To date, there is no information on skin of Alaska Pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) being used as a source for collagen. In order to produce water-soluble collagen from the skin of Alaska Pollock, a process known as hydro-extraction is utilized. This technique does not need a long extraction time or a large amount of chemical reagent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of acetic acid pretreatment on hydro-extraction of water-soluble collagen from Alaska Pollock skin. The skin samples were pretreated using acetic acid at different concentrations (0.01 M; 0.05 M; 0.1 M, 0.15 M) for two hours at chilling temperature. The pretreated skin samples were further processed to produce water-soluble collagen using the hydroxy-extraction method. The obtained collagen was analyzed for proximate compositions, yield, and amino acids compositions with high performance liquid chromatography. It was found that the proximate compositions of the collagen products, specifically the protein content (75%) and fat content (1%), met the requirements of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 8076:2014). The collagen yield ranged from 2.6 to 3.13%. The predominate amino acids in collagen were glycine, arginine, proline, glutamic acid, serine, and alanine. Pretreatment of skin sample with 0.15 M acetic acid resulted in the highest yield of water-soluble collagen (3.13%) and protein content (91.13%). The skin of Alaska Pollock fish could be used as an alternative raw material to produce water-soluble collagen for medical, pharmacy or food processing applications.

Abstract

Highlight Research Alginate content produced by Sargassum cristaefolium in three different parts of the thallus has food grade quality. The alginate chemical profile of cristaefolium in three different thallus part had a significant effect. Antioxidant activity of cristaefolium extract was in the moderate category. Antibacterial activity of cristaefolium extract against aquatic pathogenic bacteria has moderate and strong effectiveness. Abstract Sargassum, an ubiquitous variant of algae in North Sumatera, has grown wildly on Pane Island with the type, namely, Sargassum cristaefolium. This study aimed to determine the characteristics of alginates, antioxidative ability, and antibacterial ability. Alginate was extracted via the acid pathway method from three different parts of the thallus and was then characterized physically and chemically. Antioxidant activity using the DPPH method and the total phenol with a gallic acid standard. Antibacterial activity using the well diffusion method. The characteristics of alginate include yields of 53.61% ± 2.21%, viscosity of 11.44 ± 1.54 cPs, whiteness index of 56.55 ± 1.71, acidity degrees of 9.83 ± 0.34, moisture content of 9.63% ± 0.53%, ash content of 23.17% ± 0.76%, Pb and Hg levels of 0.065 ± 0.01 ppm, 0.034 ± 0.003 ppm. The IC50 value of antioxidant activity being 134.408 ± 0.04 ppm, moderate category. Extract concentration of 8 mL can inhibit the E. coli and E. tarda with inhibitions of 10.60 ± 0.72, 14.03 ± 2.97 mm. Although other pathogenic bacteria can be inhibited optimally at an extract concentration of 10 mL with inhibitions of 11.03 ± 1.43, 9.07 ± 0.20, 11.20 ± 1.56, 12.80 ± 3.01 mm. Alginates isolated in S.cristaefolium from Pane Island met food grade standards except for its viscosity. S. cristaefolium from Pane Island is a moderate antioxidant. Likewise, its antibacterial ability was moderate however it was strong against aquatic gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract

Highlight Research Immersion of tuna skin using NaHCO3 at low temperatures effectively reduces the fat content. The DH value, MW, and amino acid composition are in line with the antioxidant activity of tuna skin hydrolysate. The ABTS method showed the highest antioxidant activity in tuna skin hydrolysate. FPH of tuna skin shows functional group characteristics and amino acid composition that are similar to collagen hydrolysate products. FPH of tuna skin has the potential as a source of antioxidants, ACE inhibitors, and antifibrinolytics. Abstract The tuna fillet industry produces abundant skin by-products with high protein, which has the potential as a raw material for fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) for a source of bioactive peptides. Exploration of bioactive peptides from fish skin is generally from hydrolyzed gelatin and collagen. The study aimed to produce FPH directly from tuna skin as an antioxidant and identify potential bioactive peptides. The research began by defatting using multiple concentrations of NaHCO3 and immersion times. The defatted fish skin was produced as FPH by enzymatic hydrolysis method using different papain enzyme concentrations and hydrolysis times. The selected treatments were assessed for antioxidant activity and bioactive peptides. The results showed that the defatting process using a 0.50% NaHCO3 for 30 minutes generated the highest reducing fat content in value was 80.53%. Using papain enzyme gave a significant effect on the DH of FPH, with value was 29.72-67.64%. Therefore, FPH obtained from different concentrations for 4 hours was chosen to characterize the antioxidant activity and bioactive peptide. Hydrolysis using 5% enzyme papain showed the highest antioxidant activity of DPPH, ABTS, and reducing power with values of 0.965 mg/mL, 0.495 mg/mL, and 0.415 absorbances, respectively. FPH possesses a molecular weight of 10.15-48.50 kDa. Functional groups detected were amides A, B, I, II, and III. Glycine, proline, and arginine became amino acids dominant of FPH. Based on the diversity of biopeptide compounds, several biological function candidates were detected, namely antioxidants, ACE inhibitors, and antifibrinolytics which have the potential to be used as nutraceutical products.

Highlight Research Economic performance of commercial fishing industry in Pahang State, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Comparison of accounting profit between the two prominent fishing gear types: trawlers and purse seine in Pahang State Comparison of accounting profit between the different zones of fishing operations by the trawlers and purse seine Research findings showed that trawlers give more profit than purse seine vessels in Pahang State and overcapacity and over exploitation is distinctly found in Pahang State commercial fishing industry. This study suggested that other analysis such as biological performance by this study area should be done in future coupled with the analysis of impact of management policies on the sustainability of the fishery. Abstract Marine capture fisheries in Malaysia plays prominent role in economic growth and commercial fisheries makes great contribution to country's economy. The commercial fishing industry in East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia are mainly operated by trawlers and purse seines which rises a major concern in managing and achieving the goal of sustainable fishery. This study aimed to account the differences of accounting profit level in commercial fishing industry in Pahang State, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. In this study, comparison of accounting profits using revenue and profit approach among trawl and purse seine fishery in two different zones: Zone C (offshore) and Zone C2 (deep sea) was carried out based on the intensive survey on fishing capacity and other economic factors. The survey was carried out with the commercial fishermen and total respondents of 156 fishers at landing port. The result showed that trawlers incurred low cost yet provided higher profit than doses by purse seine. Moreover, there are more trawlers vessels operating in the Pahang state fishing ground and the open access nature of the fishery like larger profit invites more effort to use in the fishery which is leading to the over exploitation of fishery resources and threatening the sustainable condition of the fishery. The findings of the research inform the possible impact of fishing profit to overcapacity in sustainable fishery management in Pahang State fishery.

Highlight Research The 17β-estradiol hormone induction reduces the percentage of R values in skin and fin color by as much as 50-60%. The 17β-estradiol hormone induction increases total length and body weight, estradiol content, GIS and HIS, and also glucose content. The 17β-estradiol hormone induction shows mature development of the gonadal profile from functional male to functional female. Abstract   As maroon clownfish (Amphiprion biaculeatus) is a protandrous hermaphroditic fish, feminization process with 17β-estradiol hormone can be applied to accelerate the female broodstock candidate supply for further spawning effort. This study aimed to evaluate the feminization of A. biaculeatus with 17β-estradiol hormonal induction. This study used a completely randomized design with several hormone dosage, namely P0 (without 17β-estradiol hormone induction), P1 (0.5 μg 17β-estradiol/g body), P2 (1.0 μg 17β-estradiol/g body), and P3 (1.5 μg 17β-estradiol/g body). These treatments were applied with three replications. Five fish composed of α-fish, β-fish, and three γ-fish were reared in each aquarium for 90 days with a flowing water system. The α- and β-fish were then removed, while the γ-fish was injected with hormone. Otohime pellet feed was fed three times a day until apparent satiation. The results showed that the 17β-estradiol hormone could induce 100% of the feminization process of male A. biaculeatus. The dosage of P3 obtained the lowest value percentage of red, green, blue (RGB), but showing the highest total of length and body weight (6.67±0.42 cm and 6.40±0.78 g, respectively), estradiol content (149.73±4.24 ρg/mL), GSI and HSI (0.38±0.07% and 3.59±0.49%), and glucose content (4.67±0.64 mg/dL), followed by more mature gonad profile than other treatments. This condition indicates that fish in P3 treatment has been reversed as functional female. The average survival rate for the treatment was as high as 60%. Therefore, the application of 17β-estradiol hormonal induction is effective for the feminization process in A. biaculeatus as a protandrous hermaphroditic fish.

Abstract

Highlight Research Each species of microalga has a preferable nitrogen source for their optimal growth. The nitrogen sources in the grown media affected the growth rate and biochemical composition of Chlorella FNUB01. (NH2)2CO (urea) was found to be the best alternative nitrogen source for Chlorella FNUB01. For producing 1 g of Chlorella FNUB01, the use of urea reduced the cost of medium by 72.6%. Abstract Chlorella sp. is a potential microalgae species to be produced commercially for feed, growth accelerator, and immuno-modulator in fish and shrimp culture. This study aimed to evaluate the various nitrogen sources on the growth, biomass production, and biochemical composition of Chlorella sp. FNUB01. The nitrogen sources used in this study were urea (NH2)2CO, potassium nitrate (KNO3), and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3). Sodium nitrate (NaNO3) was used as a control as it is a part of the commercial medium BG-11. Generally, the sources of nitrogen in the media affected the growth and chemical composition of Chlorella sp. FNUB01. This green microalga grew better in the urea-containing medium which accounted for 1.5 times the concentration of that cultured in BG-11 (40 x106 cells. mL-1). Meanwhile, this microalgae species experienced the lowest growth when cultured in NH4NO3-containing medium. The biomass productivity of Chlorella sp. FNUB01 cultured in urea (0.93 g.L-1) was comparable to those grown with NaNO3 as the N source. A similar pattern was recorded for protein, chlorophyll, and carotenoid content as these biochemical contents were affected by N availability in the medium. Urea was an alternative low-cost N source for the culture of Chlorella sp. FNUB01. Replacement of NaNO3 with urea could reduce the cost of the medium by 72.6%.
