Abstract

Students with intellectual disability require career guidance to develop their creativity and potential. This research aimed to describe teacher career guidance strategies in developing the creativity of students with intellectual disability at SMA Al Firdaus Sukoharjo. The study used a qualitative approach with the case study method. Research participants consisted of guidance and counseling (BK) teachers, inclusion coordinators, and two accompanying teachers. Data were collected via observation, interviews, and documentation. Researchers implemented the Miles and Huberman theory for the data analysis, which involves data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the strategies used for career guidance are instructional (teaching methods) and substantial (interpersonal relationships). With these strategies, teachers can inspire mentally retarded students to develop their talent and interests. In addition, teachers pay attention to emotional closeness, namely by giving creative freedom to students. It was noted that there were mentally retarded students who won at the national level and there were alumni who had businesses after they graduated.

Abstract

Some people experience adversities that affect their psychological conditions, e.g., stress, depression, less happiness, and less psychologically prosperous. One solution to these psychological problems is to increase the attitude of qana’ah/contentment (accepting and being satisfied with what they have). This situation calls for a good qana’ah instrument to provide necessary interventions. This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of the qana’ah instrument. Researchers gathered 670 participants across all Indonesian provinces using the area random sampling approach. The results of the content validity test using Aiken’s formula show that each item in the instrument has a validity coefficient between 0.79 – 0.92. The estimated reliability coefficient of Alpha Cronbach is 0.992. The research also found that the item discrimination index ranged from 0.586 to 0.979, while loading factor of the items ranged from 0.463 to 0.875. The instrument also showed goodness-of-fit based on the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFI=0.987 (>0.900); GFI=0.925 (>0.900); AGFI=0.914 (>0.900); NFI=0.942 (>0.900); and RMSEA=0.0197 (<0.08)). The results of this study indicate that the measuring instrument is valid and reliable.

Abstract

Students are inseparable from their cultural context. This study examined the difference of ethnic identity and subjective well-being between students with Javanese and Chinese ethnic backgrounds, based on two different previous research results. The research design was a comparative quantitative study with two independent samples. The study involved 101 high school students (71 ethnic Chinese students and 30 Javanese students). Sampling technique used was purposive sampling, based on the criteria decided by the researchers. The data collection tools used were the ethnic identity scale and subjective well-being scale. The analysis techniques used were percentage descriptive analysis and independent sample T-test analysis. Data showed a significant difference in ethnic identity between Javanese and Chinese students (t=2.011, p<0.05). Javanese students have a higher level of ethnic identity than Chinese. In addition, this study showed a difference in subjective well-being between Javanese and Chinese students (t=2.197, p<0.05). The results of this study have implications for counseling services to support subjective well-being, especially for ethnic Javanese and Chinese students.

Abstract

The study of post-traumatic growth (PTG) in bullying victims is an effort to understand how individuals can grow and develop after experiencing trauma due to acts of bullying. This study aimed to understand the experience of PTG in victims of physical, verbal, and cyberbullying, and factors that influence an individual's ability to experience PTG after bullying. This study used a phenomenological approach and data collection techniques through in-depth interviews. Five informants were selected using the purposive sampling technique based on criteria relevant to the research including university students, who had experienced bullying and trauma, and had achieved post-traumatic growth. The results showed that bullying could trigger a process of reflection, meaning-making, and emotional growth that led to positive changes in the victim, such as developing a stronger, independent, and confident attitude. The study also revealed that a supportive social environment is very important in helping bullying victims achieve PTG.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the role of psychological hardiness, narcissism, and perfectionism in depression tendency among undergraduate students in Oyo State, Nigeria. A quantitative research design using a correlational approach was adopted for the study. A total of 1,086 participants were selected through stratified random sampling. Four measuring instruments were used to garner data: Depression Proneness Rating Scale-11 (α=0.77), Dispositional Resilience Scale (α=0.73), Almost Perfect Scale-Revised (α=0.87), and Pathological Narcissism Inventory (α=0.91). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s product moment and multiple regression analysis. Findings revealed that predictors accounted for 42% of the total variance in depression tendency (R2=0.417; F(5, 1080)= 154.768; p<0.01). Each predictor indicated a significant relationship with the criterion (p<0.01). The study outcomes showed the need to consider variables analyzed in the present study while diagnosing depression symptoms among undergraduate students.

Abstract

Emotional intelligence and empathy are important in counseling practice and the counselor's life. The aim of this study was to identify demographic predictors of emotional intelligence, empathy, and general health and determine the predictive relationship between the three variables. In the cross-sectional case study, 133 counselors from Accra Metropolis were administered an online self-report survey consisting of the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, Empathy Scale, and General Health Questionnaire. Findings revealed that emotional intelligence and empathy significantly predicted general health (F = 10.159, p<0.01). Other results showed no difference between the general health of male and female counselors (t = 0.470, p>0.05). Additionally, there was no difference in empathy (F=0.887, p>0.05, partial η2=0.021) and emotional intelligence (F = 0.05, p>0.05, partial η2=0.00) between licensed professional counselors and licensed lay counselors. Maintaining the health of counselors is very important because it has an impact on professional competence and on counseling practice. Thus, counselors and training institutions are expected to deepen efforts in creating awareness of the need to protect counselors' health for the benefit of clients and uphold the effectiveness of counselor practice.
