Abstract

This research was Research Design. It was conducted using three phases of Hanafin and Pecks’ model design. The phases are need assessment, design and implementation. The need assessment was to analyze the students’ need. It was conducted by giving test. Meanwhile, the sampling was taken using cluster random sampling. This research took 21 students from the eighth class. The finding of this research as follows, a) the students mainly had difficulty in answering the test of simple past tense topic, b) some students common errors found in this research were the use of time signal, error in using auxiliary and “to be” past, changing regular and irregular – infinitive verbs to past form and arranging the sentences of verbal and nominal of simple past tense. Abstract

In supporting student teaching and learning activities at school, there are several tools used, one of which is the students’ worksheet (LKS). This kind of tool is commonly chosen because it is considered more practical and more affordable in terms of price. Because of its wide usage, it is necessary to analyze the suitability of the worksheet for thelearning process. This research aims to find out the types and voices of the sentences in the students' worksheet (LKS) Interactive English, Workbook for Junior High School Year VIII first semester 2013 Curriculum Revised Edition, and its relevance with the characteristics of emergent readers. This current study applied descriptive qualitativewith content analysis. The data were the sentences in reading and dialogue texts collected from the English worksheet especially declarative and interrogative sentences, Interactive English Workbook for Junior High School Year VIII first semester 2013 Curriculum Revised Edition. The result showed that most of the sentences were simple sentences and the voices of the sentence were active voices. The dominance of simple sentences and active voice were relevant to the characteristics of emergent readers. Therefore it is suggested that the LKS be used in the learning process for the students in grade 8 of Junior High School.

Abstract

This study is entitled An Analysis of Negative Politeness Strategy Used by Anna in Anna and the King Movie (A Sociolinguistics Approach). This study describes negative politeness strategies in a sociolinguistics approach based on negative politeness strategy theory proposed by Brown and Levinson and adapted on sociolinguistics theory by Holmes. The purpose of this study was to investigate negative politeness strategies in a sociolinguistics approach, to explain negative politeness strategies in a sociolinguistics approach, and to explain the reasons of the dominant strategy was applied by Anna in Anna and the King movie. The study used the descriptive qualitative method (Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña., 1994), which explained the data narratively. The data of this study were Anna's utterances which contain negative politeness strategy in Anna and the King movie. This study found 9 out of 10 strategies used by Anna on her utterances. The strategies are as follows; 1) Be conventionally indirect, 2) hedging, 3) Be pessimistic, 3) Minimize the imposition (MTI), 5) Give deference, 6) Apologize, 7) Impersonate S and H, 8) State the FTA as a general rule, 9) Nominalize. Each strategy contained a social dimension of sociolinguistics namely; Social Distance, Social Status, Formality Form of Language, and the Purpose of the interaction. In addition, the hedging strategy was the dominant strategy used by Anna because of the flexibility, and the social dimension of sociolinguistics in Anna’s utterances in Anna and the King movie.

Abstract

How children acquire their first language has always been a question of debate between generativists and cognitive functionalists. Crain and Nakayama (1987) attempt to support the notion that children are innately equipped with syntactic rules and such rules are not learned by the child. They want to persuade functionalist linguists with the rightness of the innateness of the structure-dependent hypothesis (i.e. Universal Grammar/UG and poverty of the stimulus notion). To be precise, Crain and Nakayama discuss the Chomskyain “movement transformation” hypothesis (.i.e. subject/aux inversion in structures with relative clauses). They claim that children do not make errors when attempting to make polar interrogatives from relative clauses; as a result, they reserve the verb inside the relative clause and move the auxiliary in the main clause to the front. For example, children would not form structures like *Is the author who writing this task is confused? This is attributable to the claim that children are innately wired with structure-dependent rule. That is to say, children resort to what so-called innate schematism (UG principles) when they form yes/no questions. This assertion is based on nothing more than the claim that no structure-dependence errors were found so far in the child’s speech. Also, they conclude that grammar and meaning are disconnected from “the autonomy of syntax”. To support their view, Crain and Nakayama conducted a study on thirty children whose age ranged from three to five. This paper is primarily intended to critically review Crain and Nakayama’s article and discuss the structure-dependence rule in favour of both a formalist and cognitive functionalist point of view.

Abstract

One of important aspects that needs to be considered to make good writing is ‘cohesive device’. It is used to connect the parts of a text. This study is focused on analyzing errors on cohesive devices that are made by senior high school students in writing narrative text. The design of this study was qualitative. It was found that the students made 3 types of errors in using cohesive devices: transitions, pronoun references, and repetition of key nouns consisting of 8 errors of transitions, 4 errors of pronoun, and 6 errors of repetition. Considering the findings, it is expected that teachers formulate a new strategy or ways of corrective feedback to improve students’ writing.

Abstract

Whether there is a critical period for second language learning or not remains a mystery. Many researchers have attempted to investigate the effects of age on a second language acquisition, but they come up with different results (c.f. Lenneberg, 1967; e.g. Oyama, 1976; ; Snow & Hoefnagel-Hohle, 1978; O’grady, 1989; Long, 1990; Newport, 1989; Chiswick and Miller, 2008; Rothman, 2008). By reviewing a range of scientific studies in age effect on the acquisition of second language, the authors attempts to reveal whether younger learners acquire language better than their older counterparts and whether critical period in language learning affect all language modules. The studies indicate that, in terms of phonology, the younger the learners exposed to a second language the more likely they achieve native accent. In contrast, learners who are exposed to a second language at a later age would most likely speak a foreign accent. For the acquisition of syntax, the same circumstance applies.

Abstract

Dice Board Game is a type of modified board game that aims to encourage students to have interactive communication while learning through games. It is suggested that teaching materials should meet the needs of students. However, the suitability of teaching materials is often not considered. Therefore, it is necessary to design a media that can provide more opportunities for students to build their interactions as they need to acquire speaking skills. The design of this study is based on design-based research as proposed by Akker et al. In this study, in-depth interviews with teachers were conducted to find out the needs of students. In addition, observations were made on the syllabus and materials for media development. In addition, media implementation and interviews with English teachers were observed to assess the implementation and quality of the Dice Board Game. The results showed that the Dice Board Game media could motivate students to speak more. In addition, it was found that the activity met the practicality of speaking learning.
