Abstract

Motivation is one of the most important factors affecting foreign language learning. Some studies suggest that motivation has a robust impact on foreign language learning outcomes regardless of learners’ language talent (Wigfield & Wentzel, 2007; Rehman & Haider, 2013; Islam et al., 2013). This is why motivation becomes the most ‘complex and challenging’ problem faced by teachers (Scheidecker and Freeman, 1999). Motivation can shape learners’ attitude, objective (Maehr & Meyer, 1997), increase learners’ learning effort (Pintrich, et al., 1993), and improve learners’ achievement. However, motivation becomes a more intricate issue in the context of pesantren school in Indonesia (Farid and Lamb, 2020). That is because pesantren consists of learners from various socio-economic backgrounds. While pesantren students’ main aim is to learn religious knowledge, some of them perceive learning English irrelevant to their future. Based on contemporary theories on L2 motivation and identity and utilising the authors’ years of experience as they work as English instructors in the pesantren environment, this paper attempts to shed light on possible topics that can be explored by future L2 motivation researchers in Indonesia, especially in the pesantren context.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze learners' vocabulary mastery skills in narrative text. For example, in what kind of word class do the learner have difficulties, how it manifests, and how do the difficulties occur. This research uses only three-word classes: Verb, Noun, and Adjective. To analyze the data, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The participants of this study consist of 4 students at tenth graders of MA Umar Zahid Perak with a score below minimum competency in the final semester test. The data were collected by giving respondents a test on narrative text. This research gives information about students' vocabulary mastery in narrative text. There are four problems encountered by students, namely: Incorrect active/passive voice, diction selection errors, incorrect word order, and incorrect word class. Most errors occur in the Verb word class, and the most frequent error is incorrect active/passive voice. Based on the results of this study, the teacher should anticipate identified errors in the categories of the verb, noun, and adjective.

Abstract

Many factors influence the acquisition of a language. One of the factors influences gender differences. The language used by men and women is sometimes different in terms of time used, words produced, and standard language used. Based on findings from related areas, this research aims to give a comprehensive account of gender differences in second language acquisition in the Access class organized by IIEF (Indonesian International Education Foundation) collaborated with RELO (Regional English Language Officer) under the supervision of the US Embassy. There are differences in talking time used by women and men. women also uttered more words rather than men. But there is not a big difference between women and men in using the standard form of language. The data that was obtained from four men and four women participants showed that women spent more time to respond the questions. Women tend to comment on the statements in detail. The number of words uttered by women and men is different. Men produced the words on average 80 words in unlimited time which was prepared by the researcher. Women uttered more words than men. The average number of words uttered by women is 174 words. Women and men have no differences in using standard forms of the language.

Abstract

This current research was conducted to design a teaching medium for teaching reading on narrative texts for grade X. The methodology applied in the research is a 'design research methodology' covering three phases: Preliminary Research; Design Phase; and Assessment Phase. Based on interview with the teacher, the needs could be identified as follow: there was no appropriate media used in teaching reading, the books used not sufficient for students to practice, e-bank can be applied in the class, reading text was needed narrative text, media can used offline, and provide 100 more exercise practice for e-bank. After getting information about the needs, the product was designed and developed based on them. After the prototype was created it was then validated by an expert. In general, the expert?s evaluation was concerned with: the grammatical error and adding more questions about main idea and generic structure. Besides it was also suggested to add sound in the text. The final stage was done through an assessment by the teacher (the end user of the product). The benefit of this research is to make it the teacher have alternative teaching materials and easy to access because they are too easily accessible via mobile phones. And also the students can use in practicing various questions about reading narrative text more easily.

Abstract

Anecdotal evidence shows that some teachers are still using traditional teaching strategies. Because of the use of traditional teaching strategies, the students feel bored to learn in the class. As stated by Johnson (2008) “A simple behaviorist principle is that if we find something to be enjoyable in learning based on teacher’s strategies, we are more likely to do that thing again. If we find something to be boring, frustrating, or meaningless in learning based on teacher’s strategies, we are less likely to do that thing again.” (p.12). Therefore, if the teacher’s strategies make the students feel bored, the teacher cannot be labelled as an effective teacher. This also applies in teaching reading. In this thesis, the researcher seeks to investigate what strategies were employed a teacher at an Islamic state school. In addition, the effectiveness of the use of the strategies for teaching reading skill in news item text was also examined. In other words, the current study aims to explore how the teacher’s strategies on students’ reading skill in news item text were employed in effective ways. This study used a mixed-methods research design, in which data were obtained from two types of data collection methods, i.e. interview and questionnaire. The data were qualitative and quantitative. The researcher found that the teacher used several strategies for teaching reading to news item text; those are reading aloud, reading comprehension, and small-group discussion. The students reported that these strategies were effective for them to learn the reading skill in news item texts.

Abstract

Sentence problems often occur when students write stories in English such as recount text. There are several types of sentence errors that occur and must be avoided by students. The purpose of this study is (1) to find types of sentence problems the students' writing in recount text. 2) describing and explaining the problems that occurred, and the subject of this study was a class 10 student at MA, Darul Ulum Jombang. This study uses descriptive qualitative analysis to analyze students' writing errors proposed by the theory of Oshima and Hogue (1981). Based on this analysis, it has been found that there are 3 types of sentence errors made by students in writing recount text. The results of this study indicate that the more dominant error made by superior MA students from Darul Ulum Jombang is choppy sentences as many as 6 students, because they repeat the same subject too often in one sentence, and also excrete based on equel and unequel ideas. The second error is stringy sentences, students use too many connecting words that are connected to independent clauses in one sentence. and the smallest error is sentence fragment with 3 total student errors. this needs to be avoided in the process of learning to write recount text.
