Abstract

This research was done to test the variant of the knife edge shape on the effective capacity of the equipment, percentage of material unpeeled, and fuel consumption on mechanical coconut peeler. This research was using non factorial completely randomized design. It was found that the effective capacity of the equipment, percentage of material unpeeled, and fuel consumption were 231.24 unit hour-1, 6,67%, and 2.37 litre hour-1 respectively triangle knife edge,  301.97 unit/hour, 13.33%, and 2.62 litre/hour respectively cone knife edge, and 192.48 unit hour-1, 13.33% and 1.85 litre hour-1 respectively nail knife edge. The results showed that the variant of knife edge had significant effect on the effective capacity and fuel consumption and had no effect on the percentage of material unpeeled. Abstract

The aim of this study was to quantify and to compare the modulus values of wetland ricefield drainage in the village of Sei Beras Sekata. Drainage modulus value is used as a reference to throw out water from the wetland ricefield. Drainage modulus values was calculated by three methods i.e plotting maximum daily rainfall, daily inundation simulations with a daily water balance in the mapped fields, and using the formula of the Department of Public Works. It was found from the research, that the drainage modulus values on daily maximum rainfall plotting methods was 29 mm day-1, the daily inundation simulation methods with high daily water balance mapped fields was 40.3 mm day-1, and formula of the Department of Public Works was 61,2 mm day-1. Key words: drainage modulus, wetland ricefield, Sei Beras Sekata

Abstract

Nowadays, the increasing human need for water, is in sharp contrast with the increasingly limited water availability, especially in agriculture so that adversely affect the crop production. Therefore it is necessary to use the availability of water effectively and efficiently by creating an appropriate irrigation technologies and efficient in water as drip irrigation. This study was aimed to analyze the efficiency of drip irrigation and crop water requirements of mustard using inceptisol soil. The measurements were made by direct observation in the field at three growth phases, namely the initial, middle, and late phases. The results showed that the crop water requirements of mustard in the early phase was 2.88 mm.day-1, in the middle phase was 6.58 mm.day-1 and in the late phase of growth was 6.1 mm.day-1. Efficiency consumption produced was very high with average of 100% and storage efficiency was low i.e < 90%. This indicated an imbalance between water usage efficiency and storage, so that the production of mustard plant that produced was not optimal. Key words: efficiency, drip irrigation, inceptisol soil, crop water requirement, mustard

This research was held to analysis the efficiency of drip irrigation and crop water requirement of watermelon on ultisol soil. The parameters observed were water discharge, crop water requirement, physical properties of the soil, and the efficiency of drip irrigation (water usage and water storage). The results of this experiment indicated that the average value of water discharge was 898.4 ml.hour-1. The highest crop water requirement in the middle phase of growth was 6.23 mm.day-1 and the lowest crop water requirement occurred in the early phase of growth was 2.80 mm.day-1. Ultisol soil has sandy clay loam texture with a bulk density of 1.18 gr.cm-3, 2.12 gr.cm-3 particle density, and porosity of 43.20%. The largest water consumption efficiency was 100% and the lowest water consumption efficiency was occurred in the middle phase of growth i.e 96.7%. The largest water storage efficiency was occurred in the middle phase i.e 89.13% and the lowest water storage efficiency was occurred at the early phase of growth i.e 33.12%. Abstract

The RPM of coffee roaster mixer tool is needed to care. The machine RPM will affect the roasting quality. Various level of PRM were tested to know the quality of coffee produced. Research had been conducted at agricultural engineering laboratory, faculty Agricultural USU in Juni – September 2012 with using factorial randomized block design with one factor i.e 10, 35,5 and 61 revolution per minute. Parameters observed were organoleptic test, yield, process capacity and water content. The results showed that the RPM had no effect on the organoleptic test, yield and process capacity, and had highly significantly effect on the water content. Key words: Coffee roaster machine, RPM test, Coffee quality

Abstract

This study is aimed at testing the number of sprocket groove on coconut fiber mechanical peeler. The study was conducted to determine the number of sprocket groove to get optimal effectiveness of equipment, the percentage of material that is not peeled and less broken yield and the amount of power needed. The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Faculty of Agriculture, Agricultural engineering, University of North Sumatra in April-June 2012 using the of non-factorial randomized block design using number of sprocket grooves of 27, 29, and 31 pieces. Observed parameters was the effective capacity of the tool, the percentage of material and broken pieces and the amount of  power  needed to strip the coconut husk. The results showed that the number of sprocket groove significantly affected the effective capacity and had no effect on the percentage of defect peeling and broken pieces. The highest effective capacity was obtained on sprocket groove of 27 pieces i.e 537 coconut / hour and the percentage of unpeeled material and broken pieces was 11%. Key words: The number of sprocket groove, coconut fiber peeler.

Abstract

Roasting is an important step in the production of coffee powder, wherein the formation of aroma and distinctive flavor of coffee is determined at this stage. Of the national production of coffee beans, only 20% are processed and marketed in the form of secondary products such as roasted coffee, ground coffee and instant coffee. This study was plan to build a rotary mechanical device of coffee roasters. The study was conducted with literature study, experiment, observation and testing of the tool. The parameters measured were the effective capacity of the tool. The results showed that the effective capacity of the coffee roasters was 2.151 kg.hour-1. Key words: postharvest equipment, coffee, roasting, effective capacity.

Abstract

Information system in Perbaungan irrigated area still done manually, so the storage, processing and delivery of information to be ineffective and inefficient. In the information management most the result were done by human role and took a relatively longer time. Moreover, the information seekers-and decision-makers also have difficulty in obtaining the data they need. Therefore, it is necessary to further develop of the information system. Web-based information system is considered to be a solution in order to access information faster, systematicaly and easy to use. For that a web-based information systems in the management of irrigation in Perbaungan irrigation areas Serdang Bedagai Regency was designed. Irrigated network information system was designed using PHP programming language, MySQL database and the method of system development life cycle (SDLC). Key words: information system, irrigation system, Perbaungan irrigated area, web

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find the effect of addition of wheat flour with some kind of flour and the amount of eel meat on eel nugget. This research was an initial step to find the best quality of eel nugget. The research was conducted in April-May 2012 in the Laboratory of Food Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, USU, Medan, using a completely randomized design with two factors, i.e : the mixture of wheat flour with some kind of flour (T): (wheat:rice, wheat:corn, wheat:sago, wheat:mocaf) and the amount of eel meat (B): (60%, 65%, 70%, 75%). Parameters analyzed were moisture content, ash content, protein content, fat content, organoleptic values of color of frozen eel nugget, and organoleptic values of color,  flavour, taste, and texture of  fried eel nugget. The results showed that the effect of the mixture of wheat flour with some kind of flour had highly significant effect on ash content, protein content, organoleptic values of color,  flavour, taste, and texture of fried eel nugget. The amount of eel meat had highly significant effect on the moisture content, ash content, protein content, fat content, and organoleptic values of flavour, taste, and texture of fried eel nugget. Interaction of the  two factors had highly significant effect on the ash content, protein content, organoleptic values of color of frozen eel nugget, and organoleptic values of color,  taste, and texture of fried eel nugget but had no effect on moisture content, fat content, and organolaptic values of flavour of fried eel nugget. Substitution of wheat flour and sago flour and 75% eel meat  produced the best quality of eel nugget.
