Abstract

Karimata strait is located in the western Indonesian, separate the Kalimantan and Belitung island, that has an important role for the distribution services. The information about its dynamics such as tidal behavior, and wave is the key to support the navigation activities in this area. This research describes the results of measurements of the physical oceanography parameter on the eastern side of the Karimata Strait, Pasir Mayang Beach. The tidal data were measured for 15 days in February 25th March 12th, 2017 and sea current were observed for 24 hours on February 27-28th, 2017. The result showed that tidal type in this area is diurnal tide with amplitude of M2, S2, K1, and O1 respectively are 0.085 m, 0.086 m, 0.455 m, and 0.342 m. Significant waves high is ranged from 0.12 0.31 m with significant period of 5.32-6.9 s. The wave direction is south western. The current velocity is ranged from 0.087- 0.112 m/s and average current velocity is 0.092 m/s. The tidal current direction is northeast at low tide and south western at high tide. This study also reveals important information that wave energy variability is not only affected by seasonal conditions but also influenced by tides. The tides have responsibility to change the propagation medium of wave that is originated dispersive to non-dispersive medium. This study opens a new study of correction of wave measurement procedures by including and taking into account the effects of tides.

Abstract

As it has been widely known that the spectacular characteristics of nanomaterials are strongly dependent on their particle size, crystal structure, and molecular arrangement. The fine structure formation of nanomaterials is inevitable in an attempt of optimizing their promising applications in various fields. One of the notable nanomaterials up to now is hausmannite or Mn3O4. This paper presents a combination of coprecipitation and sonochemical routes in a concurrent way to produce spinel-structured hausmannite nanomaterials. The pH was varied during the synthesis at values of 9, 10, 11, 11.5, and 12. The crystal structure properties were evaluated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) with the diffraction angle range of 15° - 80°. The functional groups were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry having wavenumber from 400 to 4000 cm-1. In this study, pH 10 was found to be the best synthesis parameter in producing Mn3O4. Both XRD and FTIR data analyses have agreed on the formation of spinel hausmannite nanomaterials.

Abstract

The use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) characterizations have been indispensable techniques in distinguishing purity of the samples. These techniques give spectra that will be used to analyze the composition, morphology, purity, among others, of the material. One of its interesting applications is to assess elemental and chemical contaminations on second hand clothing. In this study, second hand (Ukay-Ukay) cotton garments from selected flea market sites in Valencia City, Bukidnon, Philippines were examined quantitatively for microbial and chemical contaminations by using FTIR, SEM, and EDX. The FTIR results obtained in both sites showed broad peaks at ~3336 cm-1 attributed to OH functional group, and absorption peaks at 2901.30 cm-1 associated to C-H bond, 1159.70 cm-1, 1107.44 cm-1 and 1053.82 cm-1 attributed to the stretches of CO bond. All of them were characteristics of cotton material. We observed degradation of the cotton material on both sites evident in the decreasing intensity of OH stretching (at peaks around ~3334 cm -1 [site A] and ~3332 cm -1 [site B]) and C-O stretching (around ~1500-1700 cm-1). These were due to the presence of microorganisms such as fungi (e.g. Aspergillus species). The degradation was also observed in the SEM results. Furthermore, peaks related to carboxylate contaminants were observed in both sites around ~1600 1800 cm-1 that may be caused by the exposure of the cotton garments in hydrochloric acid (HCl). In general, the characterization results on both sites indicated traces of microorganisms and that the second-hand cotton clothes were contaminated by hazardous chemicals.

Abstract

The quantum Diesel of a single fermion in 1D box system has been explored. The Fermion particle meets the Dirac's relativistic Hamiltonian with a chosen mass worth zero. This Relativistic Diesel engine research aims to obtain Diesel engine efficiency that utilizes massless fermion particles as a working substance. This study implements a modified analogy model of the classical analogue model to quantum with the implementation of the first law of thermodynamics for quantum systems so that quantum thermodynamic processes can be defined explicitly. The exploratory results of a single quantum fermion Diesel engine of a single massless system are efficiency formulation that is suitable for the efficiency of a classic Diesel engine, but its heat capacity ratio is unique, that is 2. Based on the value of heat capacity ratio, the efficiency is higher than the classical.

Abstract

Natural science, as a fundamental science, requires a series of observations to be understood. For the subject about structure of earth, earthquake, and volcano, the students need the direct observation because the nature of the subject that tends to be abstract. In order for the students to be able to observe directly about the subject of earth that tends to be formed in an abstract concept, therefore the students need the learning media that is able to change that concept into the concrete one moreover also can change it into a fun education for the students. The media that is able to solidify the abstract concept is a media in a form of interactive multimedia. In order to make the students become ecstatic during the learning process, it is a need to do the edutainment approach. Therefore, it is a necessary to do an observation with a purpose to produce the product in a form of interactive multimedia named science edutainment with the topic of earth that is applicable and valid for seventh grade of junior high school students. This research used 4D method without dissemination step. The applicability of the developed product is obtained from the validation of product and the readability test. According to the results of media validation done by the expert, the media was considered appropriate by the percentages of 76.4% for media appropriateness and 88.5% for content appropriateness. On legibility test, it obtained 91.3% by teachers and 93.5% by students, which mean that the media was very appropriate. Hence, the interactive multimedia of science-edutainment on earth topic for the 7th graders of Junior High Schools is considered appropriate and valid.

Abstract

Gowa regency is one of the areas in the province of South Sulawesi that has a high potential of lightning events. This is influenced by its geographical location which is close to the mountainous area. This research purpose to analyze the risk level of lightning strike hazard in Gowa regency using Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. This research uses lightning strike data from lightning detector boltek sensor recorded by LD2000 software. The data used is event data in 2015 with sensor coordinates of 5.218° S and 119.470° E and using a density grid of 0.01o. The results for Gowa district have a total density of 26797 strikes/kilometers with clustered areas are Tinggi Moncong subdistricts and Bungaya subdistricts which each have a density value of 10443 strikes/kilometers and 5197 strikes/kilometers. The results of this study are expected to represent the level of lightning vulnerability as a reference for making adequate grounding system in areas with high lightning activity in Gowa regency.

Abstract

Volume magnetic susceptibility measurements have been widely used in numerous studies related to river sediment characterization. A study of the transport distance effect toward the frequency-dependent volume magnetic susceptibility is needed to identify the superparamagnetic grain behavior in river sediments. The purpose of this study is to identify the presence of superparamagnetic grains and to obtain the relation between transport distances and frequency-dependent volume magnetic susceptibility in river sediments. The sediment samples were taken and measured by using the Bartington MS2B Susceptibilitymeter at two different frequencies of 470 Hz and 4700 Hz. The measurement results show that the sediment transport distance is directly proportional to the frequency-dependent volume magnetic susceptibility. Superparamagnetic grain content is identified to tend to be higher as the distance of sediment transport increases.
