Abstract

Indonesian higher education today is faced with serious challenges that will threaten the existence of some universities. An increasing international competition will require that universities take a progressive approach to attract enough students to ensure their survival. One way the universities must improve is in the quality of their administration management. While universities in Indonesia do not compare well internationally, steps can be taken to improve the quality. There are potential lessons to be learned from corporate experience in quality control management. The present study is aimed at achieving an alternative method, a hybrid model for managing and determining the proposed International class based on many criteria of academic performance in university. The model combines two different methods in decision support system: Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and linear weightage model, the proposed model uses the AHP pairwise comparisons and the measure scale to generate the weights for the criteria which are much better and guarantee more fairly preference of criteria. Findings show that applying the system as decision-support facility for the management has resulted in significant acceleration of planning procedures and implementation, raised the overall effectiveness with respect to the underlying methodology and ultimately enabled more efficient academic administration

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the effectiveness of Chempuzzle on increasing studentss understanding of atomic structure, elements periodic system, chemical bonding, and basic laws of chemistry concepts. This study has been done in four high school in Province DIY on 2008/2009 academic year. There are 247 students become participants of this quasi-experiment study. Instuctional methods including chempuzzle was conducted in this study came into three stage: chempuzzle introduction, chemdoku problem solving exercises, chemkuro problem solving exercises, and discussion. The data collection was devided into two steps. First, measurement of students priorknowledge and the second is measurement of students concept understanding. The result of Anacova test showed that the concept understanding of student from Gunung Kidul (Fo = 12.041; p = 0.001), Kota Yogyakarta (Fo = 6.918; p= 0.010), and Kulon Progo (Fo = 15.923; p = 0.000) were significantly different for the two groups, meanwhile those from Sleman (Fo = 1.418; p = 0.237) were not different for the two groups. This results showed that Chempuzzle is effective to be implemented on learning process of atomic structure, elements periodic system, chemical bonding, and basic laws of chemistry concepts in the three of four high school. To be an effective method on improving student concept acquisition, it need more time for preparing and introducing the game, and need teacher creativity to make the puzzle form interesting.

Abstract

This study is aimed at knowing the influences of librarians’ service qualities on E-catalog use. It tries to split service quality into two main blocks, i.e. physical service quality and process service quality, and synthesizes service quality constructs in four different constructs based on SERQUAL constructs. A total of 220 valid samples from four universities with almost similar academic library E-catalogue systems were used for testing 5 hypotheses by means of the Smart PLS 2.0 software. The results show that reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy positively influence librarians’ service qualities. However, librarian service quality does not significantly influence E-catalog use.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding  out: (1) the types of grammatical errors in the narrative writing of the first grade students of SMA 6 Yogyakarta, and (2) the causes of the grammatical errors in their narrative writing. The study was a case study. The participants were 30 students of the first  grade students of Senior High School Six Yogyakarta in the academic year of 201112012.  The study comprised five  steps, namely collection of data, identification of errors, quantification of errors, description of errors, and explanation of errors. The research instrument was in the form  of a writing assignment. The data were obtained from  the students' writing works. The results of the study were as follows.  First, fourteen  types of the grammatical errors of the students'  narrative writing were found concerning  verb tenses, finite  verbs,  non-finite verbs, pronouns,  prepositions,  spelling, agreement of singular and plural, punctuation,  contexts of usage, contexts of meaning, redundancy, word choices, word orders, and unintelligibility. Second, the verb tense errors occupied the first  rank (24.47%), followed  by the pronoun errors (11.56%),  and the finite verb errors (10.51%).   Third, five  types of the causes of errors were: (1)  interference in copulative verbs, word orders, verb tenses, and article usages; (2) ignorance of rule restrictions in articles, relative clauses, causative verbs, and verb + gerund constructions; (3) incomplete application of rules in prepositions, verb phrases, subjects of the sentence, and objects of the sentence; (4) false  concepts hypothesized in past verb tenses, non-finite verbs,  agreement  of  the  singular  and plural,  and  adverbs  of  degree;  and (5)  over generalization in irregular past verbs, articles, verb phrases, and plural nouns.

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the kinds of DMs employed by Indonesian and Thai students in their argumentative writing, to compare the use of DMs by both groups in terms of its nature and problems, and to find out whether the use of the DMs produced by Indonesian and Thai students contributes to the coherence of the text they write. The 46 argumentative writings composed by the Indonesian and Thai students were analyzed following Halliday and Hasan (1976) and Halliday and Matthiessen (2004). The findings of this study revealed that the most frequently used discourse markers was the addition ones (for Indonesian students) followed by concession and contrast, cause and result, and enumeration and order ones; and was the concession and contrastones (for Thai students), followed by addition, cause and result, and enumeration and order ones, respectively. In addition, it was also found that there were several problems in the use of DMs (i.e. the various type of the use of DMs, missing verbs in finite clauses, use of DMs in complex sentences, run-ons, overuse of the DMs, and repetition of the use of DMs) and were encountered differently by both groups of students. Moreover, this study also revealed that there was a relationship between the use of the DMs and text coherence. Finally, instead of being caused by the matter of the use of DMs, this study revealed that the incoherent text was also triggered by several problems including grammatical errors, irrelevant sentences, and out-of-topic sentences.
