Abstract

This study aims to describe types of verbs and their realizations in clauses in French. The data were collected from books on the French language system. The data were analyzed using a structural approach combined with referential semantics to check the acceptability of verb uses in clauses. The results are as follows. First, an intransitive verb in a clause serves as a predicate that describes the subject action without an object. Second, a transitive verb must be followed by a direct or an indirect object which can be placed in front of the verb. Third, a dual-type verb can be a transitive verb or an intransitive verb. Fourth, in the passive voice, the construction of the main verb is ‘participe passé’ that must be accompanied by the auxiliary verb ‘etre’.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the associative and dissociative reasoning in politicaldebates. The data sources were communication events in the political debates emerging inthe reform era, before the 2009 general election. The data were analyzed using a qualitativedata analysis adopted from Miles and Huberman. The fi ndings show that associativereasoning includes quasi-logic, analogy, generalization, causality, and co-existence.Dissociative reasoning includes policy and ideological dissociation. The diff erence inperspectives results in the diff erence in the ways of looking at political issues and debatecomplexity. This study aims to describe the reception of critical language awareness (CLA) in the fiction writing process among senior high school (SHS) teachers and students. It was a content analysis supported by qualitative data collected through focus group discussions. The subjects were SHS teachers and students in Yogyakarta Special Territory. The data analysis in the process of interpreting meanings of their works was based on the CLA elements. The findings showed that their reception of CLA in fiction writing was reflected in both the process and the outcome. The teachers were still not optimal enough in developing methods, using media, and selecting the assessment system in the learning of fiction writing. Abstract

This study aims to describe the pragmatic functions of metaphors in the discourse of letters to the editor in Indonesian. The data were collected through non-participant observations using a note-taking technique. They were analyzed using referential, distributional, introspective, reflexive, and abducting inference techniques. The findings show that the metaphors in the discourse of letters to the editor show assertive, directive, and expressive pragmatic functions. Such functions indicate indirectness of meanings in metaphorical expressions. The indirectness of meanings shows the writers’ politeness strategies to maintain good relations with the readers. The writers give freedom to the readers to agree or disagree with the proposed discourse.
