Abstract

Technology integration in English language learning has become a necessity in any educational development. This study aimed at developing Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) based instructional English Sociology course book and measuring the quality of the developed product. The study employed a research and development design as proposed by Sugiyono (2010) and was conducted in Sociology Education Department of Undiksha Singaraja. It involved 2 lecturers and 73 students. The data were collected by means of observation, interview, questionnaire, and document study, which were analysed descriptively. As the results, there were eight units developed in this course book which covered the topics of: introduction, greeting, asking/giving information, family tree, telling time, invitation, preposition of time, giving direction, preposition of place, descriptive text, report text, procedure text, recount text, and exposition text. Three stages of inquiry proposed by Gilbert and Hoepper (2014) were used in developing the course book. Regarding the validity and quality of the product, the results of measurement proved that the content validity of the course book was very high (coefficient validity of 0.98) and the quality of the course book was considered excellent or having a high-quality product where the mean score of the judgment was 4.83 exceeding the criteria of X ≥ 4.18. This indicates that the product of present study is readily used as an instructional material by the students of Sociology Education Department of Undiksha.

Abstract

This study employs a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to investigate secondary school efficiency and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to examine determinants that affect average secondary school student score in Indonesia. Using the DEA, this study measures the efficiency of the region with regards to the average student score using various input indicators including teacher-to-student ratio, number of teachers holding the first-degree qualification, average secondary school expense, average duration to school and average distance to school, while output variable is the average student score for 33 regions in Indonesia. The findings suggest the average technical efficiency of secondary school in the region is 89 percent with the most efficient regions are Sumatera Utara, Kepulauan Bangka Belitung, DKI Jakarta, Jawa Timur, Bali, Sulawesi Barat, Maluku, Maluku Utara and Papua Barat. With the SFA, this study identifies factors that significantly affect the average student score in the region. The results suggest that the higher ratio of teacher-to-student and higher numbers of the teacher with the first-degree qualification significantly affect the average student score in the region. However, there is no evidence that average secondary school expense and school proximity (average duration and distance to school) significantly affect secondary school efficiency.

Abstract

This classroom action research was aimed to improve mathematics conceptual understanding of X A UPW SMK Negeri 1 Singaraja after applied scientific approach with portfolio assessment. The subject of this research was 35 students from X A UPW SMK Negeri 1 Singaraja in academic year 2016/2017.The results showed that the application of scientific approach with portfolio assessment improve the mathematics conceptual understanding of X A UPW student of SMK Negeri 1 Singaraja. The mastery learning increase by 22,86% from 37,14% in cycle I to 60% in cycle II and at last increase to 77,14% in cycle III. The students also give positive response to the implementation of scientific approach with portfolio assessment with an average score 46,4. The increasing of student mathematics conceptual understanding happen because scientific approach give big chance to the student to explore and guide them finding the concept, and the portfolio assessment facilitate them to know better their ability so that the student can improve their conceptual understanding.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating (1) the teachers’ perception on the use of ICT-based Interactive Game in teaching English, and (2) the perception of the sixth graders on the use of ICT-based Interactive Game toward their learning motivation and English achievement. Methodically, this study was quantitative research in which survey was employed. In order to collect the data, different questionnaires were administered primarily as the instrument both for teachers and students. The samples of this study were 6 English teachers and 152 students of the sixth grade in 6 primary schools in Sukasada District, Buleleng Regency. Prior to data analysis, the results of this study were computed by finding out the percentage of each item and its average in order to withdraw the conclusion descriptively. The results were (1) there was a positive perception of the teachers with regard to the use of ICT-based Interactive Game in teaching English to the sixth grade of primary schools in the cluster IV and V in Sukasada District and (2) there was positive perception of the students on the use of ICT-based Interactive Game toward their learning motivation and English achievement.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing why a teacher’s guide in using positive reinforcement strategy for TEYL needed to be developed, developing a teachers’ guide in using positive reinforcement strategy for TEYL and analyzing the quality of the teacher’ guide. The R&D by Gall, Gall & Borg’s (2003) model was employed in this study, comprising 6 steps, including need analysis, product planning and designing, product developing, product evaluation, revision and final product. The results indicated that first, the teacher’s guide needed to be developed  was a teacher’s guide that focused on the aspects of content, presentation, language and illustration and graphics; second, the development of the product was using the analysis of responses from teacher through questionnaires coupled with literature review of the characteristics of a good teacher’s guide, types of positive reinforcement and positive reinforcement strategy and the product was developed into five chapters including praise, symbolic, token, tangible and activity reinforcement chapters; third, the quality of the product met the criteria of a good and excellent product with the score from expert judges were 135, 173 and 174. These findings have important contribution to teacher’s pedagogical and professionalism competence in general or the teacher’s ability to use positive reinforcement strategy in particular.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to develop a science thematic model of science, environment, technology and its validity so that it can be used to improve the literacy of science of elementary school students. This was a research and development. The data collected in this research consisted of model validity data, students’ science literacy, students’ activity, students’ and teachers’ response to the developed learning model. The data collection techniques used was questionnaires, observations and tests. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The result of the research showed that the developed thematic learning model of science, environment, technology and societies got an average score of 4.11 falling into the valid category. The ability of science literacy increased from the previous 41.71 at a very low level (<54) to 62.91 at a moderate level (60-75). The average score of student activity during the learning was in a good category. Students’ and teachers’ responses to the developed learning model were positive.

Abstract

This study was done in response to Farida’s finding ( Farida, 2015) about the analysis of errors made by the eighth grade students of junior high school in one of the schools in solving mathematical story problems which showed that their mathematical ability was still low. The students’ low ability in solving mathematical story problems was caused by their low ability in understand mathematics. This aim was aimed at describing data on students’ ability in understanding mathematics as the result of the implementation of discourse teaching with Mathematical Bet Line strategy. This study was a quasy experiment with nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of all students of the fourht gradde in one schooll in Kuningan district, Kkuningan regency. The study used mathematical ability test based on indicators developed by Skemp (1976). The statistical analysis used in this study was independent sample t-test. The result showed that the improvement in the students’ mathematical understanding ability of those who learned through discourse teaching with Mathematical Bet Line strategy was better than that of those who learned through Direct Instruction in the topic criterion. Fraction the improvement in mathematical ability was shown by N-gain of 0.67 , falling in the medium criterion.
