Abstract

This research analyzes the challenges for Indonesian economy towards the implementation ofASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) especially on employment opportunity in Indonesia.Using regression technique, the labour cost and change in fix capital are statistically significant ininfluencing the employment opportunity. This result implies that ACFTA will challenge the Indonesiancompetitiveness due to increasing labour cost, while ACFTA also potentially increases capitalflow from China which has ambiguous impacts on labour absorption. The SWOT (Strength,Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) analysis recommends for Indonesian government to improvecomprehensive strategy of national industry to be more competitive to China products. Keywords: ACFTA, employment opportunity, structural equation modelJEL classification numbers: F13, F14, F15, F42

Abstract

This study aims at determining the impacts of economic policies on rice and welfare in Indonesia. It estimates a simultaneous equation model with two-stage least squares method, using secondarydata from 1979 until 2008. The simulation of partial policy will be a trade-off for the producers andconsumers of rice. The policy of the floor grain price is still needed to respond to the increasedproduction of rice. The paper suggests that if the input subsidy is taken out, it should be preferablyfollowed by the increase in output, and at least, the rising percentage should be in the same numberso that the policy will be better off. Keywords: Welfare, trade-off, better-off, simultaneous equation modelJEL classification numbers: Q13, Q18

Abstract

This study estimates recreational value of Taman Nasional Gunung Merapi (TNGM – Mount MerapiNational Park) in Kaliurang, Yogyakarta with a travel cost method. Since the visitors are not the frequentones, the paper estimates the visitor’s utility using a categorical regression technique. Applyingin-depth interview on visitors from August 1st until August 15th 2009, the results suggest that the utilityfunction for recreation at volcano national park is better estimated using the negative binomialdistribution model. It also finds that the economic value of recreation at volcano national park is Rp222,000, and that the total consumer surplus for recreation national park is Rp 31.2 billion. Keywords: Travel cost valuation, binomial regression model, recreation national park valuationJEL classification numbers: D12, L83

Abstract

Assigning autonomy to regency governments in Indonesia has failed to increase regency’s economies. While it increases regency government role in planning and initiating policies, its impact oneconomic development has been insignificant. This stems from the lack of institution’s capacity inorganizing the bulk funds transfer from the central government which leads to inefficiency in resourceallocation. This paper maps these regencies based on their fiscal dependency. This paperalso applies Data Envelopment Analysis to identify the efficient and non efficient regencies in sucha way that the non efficient regencies might use the efficient ones as the benchmark to increase theirefficiency. Keywords: Autonomy, regency government, efficiencyJEL classification numbers: H21, H53, H71, H72

Abstract

This research investigates the trade creation and trade diversion of Indonesia manufactures importfrom extra and intra ASEAN countries after ASEAN economic integration. Using regression analysis, the study suggests that Indonesia manufactures import has been diverted from extra ASEANcountries both in short run and long run. In the short run, the ASEAN economic integration doesnot result in trade creation for Indonesia manufactures import from intra-ASEAN countries. Thismight stems from the insignificant difference Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CEPT) andMost Favoured Nation (MFN) tariffs and the existence of non-tariff barriers. Keywords: Economic integration, trade creation, trade diversion, Indonesia manufacturesJEL classification numbers: F15, O14
