Abstract

ABSTRACT Attribution theory derives from psychology in language teaching. This theory believes that success or failure in language teaching might be upon four main sets of attribution: ability, effort, luck, and task difficulty. Some L2 learners, specifically non-English department students find difficulty in speaking due to either they view themselves as incapable in learning English, they do not push themselves hard enough to learn English, or they perceive that the task given is too difficult to be completed. Target Operation (TO) Game is proposed to accommodate the problems that later, determines the success or failure of learning speaking. This research provides some examples of tasks of TO Game, descriptive results of the four sets of attribution, and the outcome of the implementation of the game. Keywords: attribution theory, Target Operation (TO) Game, speaking

Abstract

Abstract Assessment is an essential part in teaching and learning process as it usually provides opportunities both for teachers and students to learn. In the context of second or foreign language teaching, assessment is usually conducted to elicit information regarding students’ second language ability. This paper reports and analyzes the results of an interview with a university lecturer in Central Sulawesi who was once involved in the construction of a test to place students in different classroom levels. Although it is apparent from the analysis that there are several weaknesses found in the placement test viewed from the six qualities proposed by Bachman and Palmer (1996), there are other essential aspects that need to be learned from the results of the interview by second or foreign language teachers in other teaching contexts. Keywords: assessment, placement test, washback

Abstract

ABSTRAK Wujud dari tanggung jawab tersebut adalah dengan meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran. Pelaksanaan pembelajaran merupakan hal yang sangat penting dalam pendidikan. Dalam perkembangan teori pemerolehan bahasa. Long dalam (Budiono, 2005: 6) berpendapat bahwa bahwa segala kegiatan yang berlangsung dalam kelas merupakan salah satu unsur yang sangat penting dalam menentukan siswa memperoleh bahasa. Dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran dikelas setiap guru memiliki model pembelajaran yang berbeda satu sama lain. Tetapi tetapi memiliki 1 tujuan yaitu materi pembelajaran dapat tersampaikan dan mendapatkan hasil yang maksimal. Yang tercakup dalam model pembelajaran adalah pendekatan, metode dan teknik pembelajaran. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah pendekatan yang digunakan adalah pendekatan formal, pendekatan behavioristik, dan integral. Metode pembelajaran yang digunakan adalah: metode terjemahan, metode partispatori, dan metode integrative. Selanjutnya teknik pembelajaran yang digunakan adalah Listen and repeat (mendengarkan dan mengikuti), Substitution (Substitusi), Question and answer (tanya-jawab), In-pair (berpasangan), Ceramah Kata Kunci: Model Pembelajaran

Abstract

Abstract Customary law is the law or unwritten rule that grow and thrive in a society that is only obeyed bycostom society in Belu. One of the most important customary law in Belu is the marriage law. Matrilineality system in south Belunese descent is traced through the mother and maternal ancestors.However, in this matrilineal system, there is still a customary law that maintains the father’s lineage based on customary law by adopting which called matamusanwhich is really ineresting  because it is dfferent with matrilineal system in Minangkabau as the most popular matrilineal society. The research design of this thesis is descriptive qualitative research. It is intended to describe about matamusan as customary adoption system, chronological step of matamusan determination, the development of matamusan implementation, factors influencing the development of matamusan determination, and the effectiveness of customarylaw toward matamusandetermination.From the result of this study, it was clear that customary law is still effective in handle the violation of matamusan determination. Key words :  Customary Law, Custom Society, Matamusan Determiantion and Wewiku   Wehali

Abstract

Abstract: There are many methods applied by educators in teaching languages in the world. Some of them believe that traditional classroom method is considered the best, while others prefer to implement new way of teaching, using computers to assist students in learning a language. This new method is known as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). However, not all students who are good in using computers succeed to do self-study. Such students failed to enjoy Life on the Screen, it is not about computer, it is about people and the relationships into which they enter with machines and, first of all, with themselves through computer-mediation (Debski ,1997, p. 29). To review and consolidate ideas and conditions that can be the obstacles and drawbacks to the CALL application; Debski and Gruba did a project-oriented computer assisted language learning (PrOCALL) at the University of Melbourne in two second semesters (12 weeks each) over the years 1998 –1999, involving many languages (Chinese, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian, and English as Second Language (ESL)). The result of their ProCALL project is that CALL is proven to be beneficial to tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, this success takes place both within the group of students who have both advanced and low computer skill. Australia, for example, starts to insert CALL in the curriculum, although it is limited to year 12 students only. It is a good start. Australia’s policy proofs that CALL is beneficial in schools, it means that CALL is not only beneficial for tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, but also in Victoria. This paper will also discuss about crucial matters like integrating this sophisticated technology to suit the curriculum and the importance to attract the interest of big softwares companies to invest money in CALL projects.Key words: CALL, ProCALL, Australia, The University of Melbourne

Abstract

Abstract: English students are expected to be able to produce an effective essay for the sake of their academic writing. For this purpose, they should pay attention to the rhetorical aspects of writing such as content, organization of ideas, discourse, syntax, vocabulary, and mechanics. This article presents the result of classroom action research conducted to overcome practical problems of writing an essay by using peer-assessment strategy. The subject of this study was 14 fifth-semester students of CiptaWacanaChristianUniversity of Malang taking essay writing class. In general the strategy proves effective in improving the students’ ability in writing an essay. In addition to the writing achievement, the strategy is able to improve the quality of learning process of essay writing. The students are motivated to write an essay more enthusiastically and are much aided to be a better writer; they no more think that writing is a burden, so they have a good response and an attitude to the strategy.      Key Words: Improving, Essay Writing Ability, Peer-Assessment Strategy

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini berdasar pada penelitian yang bertujuan untuk membuat  pembelajar menilai sendiri hasil karangan mereka dengan menggunakan metode self-assessment.  Hal ini dilakukan untuk memberi kepastian dan keyakinan bahwa metode ini bisa diterapkan di dunia pendidikan. Penelitian yang dilakukan adalah dengan mengkorelasikan antara nilai writing  yang diberikan pengajar (teacher assessment) dengan self -assessement. Dari analisa data, ditemukan bahwa pembelajar yang menilai tinggi dengan metode self-assessment juga mendapatkan nilai tinggi dari pengajar  (teacher assessment) sehingga hipotesa dari penelitian ini diterima. Itu artinya bahwa reliabilitas self assessment saat diterapkan di kelas masih bisa diterima, sehingga pengajar bisa melatih para mahasiswa melakukan  self-assessment untuk mengetahui kemampuan diri mereka sendiri, terutama dalam bidang kecakapan menulis. Penemuan dari penelitian ini penemuan dari penelitian ini bisa meyakinkan pengajar yang hingga saat ini masih meragukan reliabilitas dari metode self-assessemnt ini. Pada awal tahun 1900-an, penilaian hasil belajar dilakukan secara ekstensif untuk mengukur kemampuan  dan kecerdasan pembelajar, namun hal ini tidak dilakukan untuk membantu proses pembelajaran dan kemajuan mereka menjadi lebih baik (Becker & Shute, 2010:5). Tetapi jika pada abad ini tidak menutup kemungkinan untuk dilakukan self-assessment di mana pembelajar mengevaluasi kinerja mereka sendiri. Brown, (2004:251)  mengatakan bahwa semua kecakapan (skills) bisa diukur dengan mengunakan tes tradisional, meskipun (2004:252) mengakui bahwa evaluasi alternatif seperti self assessment bisa berakibat kotraproduktif karena akan menimbulkan implikasi baru dan berbeda jika dibandingkan dengan model evaluasi belajar yang sudah ada atau teacher assessement. Kata kunci: self-assessment, teacher-assessment, writing
