Abstract

Manggarai is an ethnic group who lived in the west side of Flores islands. As an ethnic group they have custom which was certainly precious and inheritance from generation to generation. At traditional ceremonies they used Manggarai language (tombo manggarai) and there are so many terms contained in the language. One of the terms which was inheritance of the Manggarai accentors and thrive in the life of Manggarai society was ata pe’ang ko ata one. The research used of qualitative method. Meaning was of essential concerned to the qualitative. The aim of this study here was to investigate the meaning of social phenomena as experienced by the people themselves. Most of the data in this study got by using interview between researcher and informants and in validity of data the researcher used data triangulation and methodological triangulation. The resulted of the study; the term of ata pe’ang-ata one, still close related to the status of authority in managed the household, the genes, and the rights of ownership. Ata pe’ang-ata one was symbolism language which used when a baby birth in Manggarai socitey. Ata pe’ang (outsiders) was symbol to infants who sex female while ata one (insiders) was symbol to infants who sex male. Along with development of the era, traditional ceremony at the moment that baby birth inch by inch not used by Manggarai society. The researcher suggests that this study can be used as an example in pragmatic, meaning and semiotic and in order to this research to develop theory about pragmatic, meaning and semiotic. In practical the researcher suggests to the English students, lecturer, and further researcher in order that will be using this study as a reference and the study also can upgrade their knowledge.

Abstract

This thesis analyzes the Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. The story is about Bannet family. It is interesting to discuss, this novel since it reflects solidarity of family, and the power of woman who always opposed the marriage culture when their got married with a man it is seen when Elizabeth try to contrary her parents mindset especially to all parents in that era. She faces many problems in her life. With all of her ability she can solve it and gain her happiness. This study contains two problems formulation to be analyzed. The first is “What issues of feminism are reflected in the Pride and Prejudice novel?” And the second is “What are the dominant roles of women deserted in the Pride and Prejudice novel?”. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative method because beside the data are taken from the novel (primary data), the researcher also use secondary data (theories, explanation, different news form about feminism). These secondary data are used to support the result of analysis of the primary data. Finally, the researcher suggests on the findings of Feminism Reflected in the Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen to the readers to comprehend that Pride and Prejudice novel also provide insight to the community to determine the role of women on the early nineteenth century were always viewed as weak and does not have the ability in his capacity as a human being. The results of this study can be used as a reference in the research literature itself in educational institutions and so on. The result of this study is also expected to be useful in several ways. This study gives significance for the researcher to understand and provides more knowledge about feminism. This study may be expected to give significant to the future researchers who conduct studies about literature focusing on feminism or on Pride and Prejudice novel by providing preliminary study.

Abstract

Reba Tradition is part of Guru Sina’s tradition and an event which is interested to participate, many kinds of symbols used on it. Reba Tradition is not separated from language. By using language, the researcher can express our thought, idea, emotion, and feeling. Because language is an important aspect of human life and social communication among the members of society. Therefore, the researcher has been interested in studying this problem by formulating four researcher problems such as: What is the background of Reba Tradition at Guru Sina? How are the implementation process of Reba tradition at Guru Sina? What are symbols and meaning of those symbols are used in Reba tradition at Guru Sina?and What are functions Reba tradition for people at Guru Sina? This study has two significances of the study, theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the result of this study will give the description about the symbols are used in Reba tradition. Practically, the researcher hopes this research is useful to enrich Reba tradition and as additional knowledge for people or student both from Ngada or others. The research of this thesis is descriptive qualitative research. It is intended to describe about the symbols, and also the symbols meaning used in Reba tradition. Key words: and

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a process to recognize or identify text, and then recall the contents of the text. Reading comprehension can also be meant as an activity to make a sequence of descriptions, can be evaluated as well as to respond to what is expressed or implied in the text. Reading comprehension, especially in Japanese is required by students majoring in Japanese language in the course dokkai 2 (reading comprehension), due to a lack of proficiency in reading comprehension Japanese will make Japanese language is difficult, it is to help students understand the reading in Japanese, used active learning methods type of reading aloud. Active learning methods type of reading aloud can help improve students' understanding of the discourse, to remember vocabulary constantly, and recognize new words that appear in the context of the passage. The use of active learning methods type of reading aloud to facilitate the understanding of the Japanese language discourse. Because it was evident the students better understand Japanese discourse after use active learning methods type of reading aloud. In addition, the use of active learning methods type of reading aloud can create active learning and independent and attractive, so as to motivate the students to understand the discourse of Japanese.

Abstract

Penggunaan bahasa tulis dan bahasa percakapan pada kenyataannya sangat berbeda. Seperti diketahui secara umum bahasa percakapan jauh lebih singkat dibandingkan dengan bahasa tulis. Pemendekan kalimat dalam berkomunikasi mempunyai tujuan untuk menghemat waktu dan energi yang keluar tanpa mengurangi makna yang ada sesuai dengan kaidah bahasa yang berlaku. Tanpa disadari masyarakat pengguna bahasa telah mengimplementasikan prinsip ekonomi dalam berkomunikasi. Hal ini seperti yang disampaikan Verhar (1999: 85) bahwa “ekonomi bahasa adalah usaha yang dilakukan oleh pengguna bahasa untuk “menghemat” energi pada saat melakukan kegiatan berbahasa dengan menyingkat apa yang diucapkan selama hal tersebut tiidak berlawanan dengan kultur dimana bahasa tersebut digunakan”. Prinsip ekonomi yang diterapkan dalam berbahasa tidak bisa terlepas dari proses morfologi. . Hal ini dijelaskan oleh Ramlan (dalamSamsuri, 1988: 5) bahwa pada dasarnya yang dibahas dalam morfofonemik adalah perubahan fonologis yang disebabkan oleh penggabungan 2 morfem.Perubahan tersebut bisa berkaitan dengan penambahan, pengurangan, perubahan atau penggeseran fonem. penelitian ini adalah penelitian diskriptif kualitatif dengan tujuan untuk menegetahui 1) perubahan bunyi, 2) bentuk percakapan dan 3) perubahan bentuk kata kerja. hasil yang diperoleh dari penelitian ini adalah perubahan bunyi yang paling sering terjadi adalah pemendekan bentuk kata. selanjutnya bentuk percakapan yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah kata diakhir kalimat dihilangkan, perubahan bentuk kata kerja yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah katakerja bentuk Te.

Abstract

Cerita merupakan salah satu wujud budaya yang berupa hasil karya masyarakat Indonesia. Penyebaran cerita pada umumnya dilakukan secara lisan. Melalui kelisanan tersebut, penyimak cerita dapat memahamai kejadian, sejarah, dan asal usul sebuah tempat. Cerita yang ditujukan khusus untuk anak-anak sering disebut cerita anak. Cerita anak mengandung pesan yang bermanfaat bagi perkembangan moral anak. Cerita anak dapat dijadikan media pembelajaran yang berpotensi besar mengembangkan karakter siswa, khususnya siswa SMP.

Abstract

This study analyzes discrimination toward black woman which appears in Maya Angelou’s poems. In this case, the researcher chose three poems of Maya Angelou. Those are “Still I Rise”, “Phenomenal Woman”, and “Caged Bird”. In other to discover them, the study was conducted by using feminism theory and also historical and biographical approaches. It focuses on words, lines, and stanzas of the poems. The research was conducted with the following statement of problems: (1) What is the dominant type of feminism in Maya Angelou’s poems? (2) What are the reasons of using feminism perspective in Maya Angelou’s poems? (3) How are the images of black woman described in Maya Angelou’s poems?. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative method because the researcher does not use statistical numerical but is requires descriptive analysis of the object. The reseach is conducted by descriptive qualitative because the result of the data is word, sentence, and language. After collecting the data from the poems, the reseacher put them into some groups which relates to the problem focuses. The researcher analyzes every datum by using content analysis. Based on the research questions mentioned above, the result of the study are as follows. First, the reseacher concludes that the dominant type of feminsm in Maya Angelou’s poem is Radical Feminism because discrimination toward black women are related to the bad history of black people. Second, the reasons of using feminism perspective by the poet is the image of her bad life experiences. The last result is the image of black woman in Maya Angelou’s poems which shows the discrimination toward woman in her era. The result of the study can be used as a reference in the research literature itselt in educational institution and so on. It also expected to be usefel in saveral ways. This study gives significance for the researcher to understand and provide more knowlegde about feminism. The study may be expected to give significance to the future researcher who conduct studies about literature focusing on feminism or on poems or in using biographical and historical approaches.

Abstract

This study is aimed at implementing speech contest to improve students’ fluency in speaking. The subject of this research was 15 students of intermediate level of speaking class. The preliminary study indicated that fluency was students’ problem in speaking since they tended to produce incomplete sentences with many pauses in performing speaking task. The instruments used to collect the data were test, questionnaire and interview. This technique was a real world speaking task in which it required students to deliver speech on a stage in front of audiences individually. The analytical scoring rubric with four criteria, including fluency, accuracy, content, and method of delivery, was used by three raters to determine students’ score. This technique was successfully done in 1 cycle since it met the criteria of success, that was 80% students (12 students), got score 80 or above and 84% students (13 students) showed positive response toward speech contest. Speech contest helped students to show their potential and directed students to work hard eliminating their negative feelings that might hinder their confidence to speak fluently.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at evaluating the validity of TOEFL test as instrument for placement test. The three sections of the test including listening, structure, reading, and vocabulary were used to measure 96 freshmen basic competences in English, before attending courses. Based on the result of TOEFL test, students were classified into four classes from the highest to the lowest competency levels, namely A, B, C, and D. To measure the correlation level, the two sets of score were compared by using Pearson product moment correlation, the TOEFL score and students’ achievement score. The score of students’ achievement was derived from the final test of Integrated Course. There were 2 language skills and 2 language components that were tested: listening, reading, grammar and vocabulary. The medium positive and significant correlation level (0.41) indicated that TOEFL test was quiet valid to be used as instrument for placement test. However, students’ characteristics and background should be considered to achieve the high and significant correlation level.Keywords: placement test, TOEFL test, and validity

Abstract

The development of social media recently in this era is really attractive to be discussed. Almost all students use their mobile phone to access it. So that why we as teacher cannot use this brilliant tool in learning English. Qodriani (2013) said that Facebook is not just a great way for people to find old friend or know about what happening recently but it is also an incredible learning media that can support teaching and learning activity. Attractive media makes learning enjoyable. The design used in this research was descriptive design with 12 students as participants. This research focuses on the English learning through Facebook. How Facebook used in English language class, how students’ perspective of using Facebook in learning English and how Facebook maximize their English will be described in this paper. This activity offers students in learning English and makes enjoyable learning. Moreover students can write and share what they have done or something happened to them without any worrying of making mistake.
