Abstract

A symbol is an object that represents an idea, image, visual, belief, action, or material. They are used to convey ideas and beliefs. This means symbol can give the direction for those in choosing certain tools that are used to get their mission. Here, symbol is the expression of a thing that cannot be signed with the right sign. Symbols are alive as long as they have the meanings. Every place in Indonesia has its own culture. One of them is Sikka Krowe’s culture of Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara. Sikka Krowe is the special call for one of the ethnic groups in Maumere. It is in Sikka regency area. Sikka itself is the name that refers to a small traditional village known as Sikka Natar (Kampung Sikka). Krowe refers to people in countryside from Nele (west of Sikka regency) to Tanah Ai (east of Sikka regency). Therefore, the researcher is interested in studying this culture in debt by formulating three research questions: (1) How is the procedure of Sikka Krowe’s weding ceremony of Maumere. (2) what kinds of symbols used in Sikka Krowe’s wedding ceremony of Maumere? (3) What are the meaning of those symbols?. The researcher found the kinds of symbols that are revealed in Sikka Krowe’s wedding ceremony like in daily life such as wua ta’a, tua/moke/arak, manu ama and manu muhun, wair hu’er, bala, mu’u, kalar gelang, jarang, tudi, wawi ireng,reng-reng, utan, kila, pagat uma, bolo plagar and lensu widin tilun. . This is the symbol of the simplicity of life. The process of wedding ceremony requires some conditions regulated and set by the norms and traditions.

Abstract

In every place have some unwritten rules depend on the countries, beside people use a language, they use a politeness also. Politeness is important thing that people must know when they communicate with other people and make a polite conversation. Politeness strategies are used to formulate messages in order to save hearer’s face when face-threatening acts are invitable or desire. Brown and Levinson stated four main types of politeness strategies: bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record (indirect). In this study is intended to analyze politeness strategies that used by characters in “The Big Wedding Movie”. There is a problem that is discussed in this study (1) what politeness strategies are used on “The Big Wedding Movie”? (2) why do characters in “The Big Wedding Movie” use politeness strategies? This analysis focus on the politeness strategies that used by characters in the conversation of “The Big Wedding Movie”. The researcher applied the qualitative research and used descriptive methods in this study because all data are in the form of words. Meanwhile, the type of the research is content analysis because it intended to analyze the content of the data which are in the form of movie script to find the politeness stretegies. When analyze the data, the researcher used the theory of Brown and Levinson about politeness strategies. Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that there are eighty six utterances that use four politeness strategies. They are bald on-record with twenty nine utterances, positive politeness with thirty eight utterances, negative politeness with ten utterances, and off-record with twelve utterances. The most frequently used politeness is positive politeness, bald on-record, off-record, and the less frequently used is negative politeness. For supporting the study, the researcher needed source of the theories related to politeness strategies such as : bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record (indirect). From the findings, the researcher expected that the result of this study will useful for English learners to get the information from politeness strategies found in the movie of “The Big Wedding Movie”.

Abstract

Belis tradition is part culture in Sumba and a condition to marriage someone. Many kinds of symbols used on it. Belis tradition is not separated from culture. By of culture, Belis be an own culture that has different process and symbols. Because every culture have different process based on that place. Therefore, the researcher has been interested in studying this problem by formulating four researcher problems such as: how the process of Belis tradition, what are the symbols and symbols meaning used in Belis tradition process, what kinds of terms used in Belis tradition?. There are so many symbols and terms used in Belis tradition. The symbols used such as sirih pinang, parang, gading, mamuli, stallion, pig, kombu cloth, rau nyau (janur), gong, kayu kaba (white cloth), and nibu pahori (spear). Every symbols has the meaning itself such as stallion as symbol of masculine. Sirih pinang as symbol of welcoming, and etc. And the terms used in Belis tradition such as year, layewa, ngaba wini, wunang, pahalaku hilu, kadehang, jedi, ahu papalu, and hangera. After the researcher found and discussed the problems of terms and symbols used in Belis tradition, the researcher made a conclusion of the research finding and discussion. From the result of this research, it was obvious that in Belis tradition used some symbols. And every symbol has own meaning. the researcher really hopes that this researcher to complete this study to be perfect. In addition, the researcher really hopes that this research can help other researcher who wants to continue or conduct research in the same field of the study or discuss about language aspect that occur in the Belis tradition especially in Anakalang.

Abstract

Linguistic analysis is an analysis of language study which include language form, language meaning, and language in context. Study of linguistic can learn the kind of approaches in language. For example, grammar, language and culture, like the study of cultural discourses and dialects is the domain of sociolinguistics, which looks at the relation between linguistic variation and social structures. Language is one of human characteristics because people living with language. Indonesia is well known of one thousand islands country and as 1000 languages country. So, in Indonesia, there are many vernaculars from each ethnicity in every region of Indonesia. Javanese language has the most speakers of the existing another language speakers. As a language that has a lot of speakers, Javanese language has a lot of kinds or dialect forms as a result of the space and time process. One of the examples is Selogudig-an language which is found in Probolinggo district, especially in Selogudig village, Pajarakan sub-district, Probolinggo district. From the linguistic aspects, Selogudig-an language is a dialect of the Javanese language. To analyze this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research design. It is intended to describe about how Javanese language ­­Selogudig-an dialect is formed, the phonological, lexical and accent differences of Javanese language Selogudig-an dialect.

Abstract

Suro is the first day of the month of Javanese calendar, sura or suro which coincides with the first of Muharram in the Islamic calendar.One suro usually celebrated in the evening after sunset on the day before the date of the usually called Malam Satu Suro or the night a suro. Many kinds of symbols used on it. It is interesting to study Symbolism on Satu Suro in linguistics way, especially in semiotic. Therefore, the researcher has been interested in studying this problem by formulating four researcher problems such as: what are the functions of the ritual before the celebration of Satu Suro? Why ritual must be done before the celebration of the Suro? What are the functions of symbol which are used in celebrating Satu Suro? Why are symbols of Satu Suro reflected on celebrating Satu Suro? The research of this thesis is qualitative descriptive research. It is intended to describe about the symbols, and also the symbols meaning used in Satu Suro celebration. The instruments used in this study are documentation, observation, and interview. The analysis of the data includes studying and reading the theory. Understanding the data and then analyzing the terms and symbols meaning based on the theory. The researcher found that celebration Satu Suro in Yogyakarta Palace there are 5 Devotion or Lima Dharmabakti that must be done before the celebration of the Suro such as; Samadhi, Ruwatan, Clean the tomb, Alms Earth, and Sedekah. And there are 24 kinds of offerings that must be used in celebaring Satu Suro. Every symbol has the meaning.All these things must be done because they believe that if you miss the ritual alone, there will be a disaster. Finally, the researcher really hopes for the further researcher to complete this study to be perfect. In addition, the researcher hopes that this research can help other researcher who wants to continue or conduct research in the same field of the study or discuss about language aspect that occur in the Satu Suro celebration. And also the researcher hopes that further researcher can analyze literary devices used on Satu Suro celebration or the other ceremony on Javanese cultural especially in Yogyakarta.

Abstract

Acculturation is a process which is growth and appear if the society face with a new culture. And this new culture influence in their society, so they are adapting from the old culture become as new culture. Concerning with aculturation of islamic and javanese culture it is an interesting term, people not being aware to analyze something closer with their envinronment, something that not be watched and language is one of the interesting term to be anayze. Therefore, the researcher is interested in studying this problem by formulating three research problems: (1) what are the acculturaturation betweeen Arabis language and Javanese language in Bululawang?. (2) what are the meanings of those acculturation? (3) how the process of acculturation between Arabic language and Javanese language in Bululawang?. Hopefully of the findings of the acculturation between Arabic Language and Javanese language, people can catch the language philosophy, they know that some of language that they used is made from the acculturation. And for the younger generations must know well about the process from this acculturation, it can add more knowledge for them.

Abstract

Kidung doa song composed by Sunan Kalijaga are analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative approach in finding denotative meaning. The research method is used from the researcher itself because for analysis the data use interpretation of own words. The data is taken three lyrics from kidung doa song by Sunan Kalijaga such as”Kidung Rumekso Ing Wengi”,”Ilir- ilir” and “Kidung Lingsir Wengi”. The researcher choose this lyrics because it contains the high valuable meaning related on Islamic religion which is designed in Javanese language with using in Java culture substances in every song’s lyrics. Kidung “Rumekso ing Wengi” is a kidung doa composed by Sunan Kalijaga in his journey/dakwah to spread Islam religion in Javanese Island, He uses this song (kidung) as the medium for dakwah. And the second song Kidung Lingsir wengi was composed by Sunan Kalijaga, when he conducted a meditation in the midnight after he did the midnight prayer/tahajud. He composed this song used for worship to ALLAH SWT. In Kidung Rumekso ing wengi, Ilir-ilir and Kidung Lingsir Wengi, Sunan Kalijaga used simple word to his listener, because it would be more affective to deliver the message to the listener. In first song also contain the religious messages that we should be aware of our life, when we want to have a better lives, the comfortable life, the prosperity and the protection for our body, we must stay in the path (Islam), and obey to ALLAH SWT (Syariat). Because our life, destiny, fortune, etc. has in ALLAH SWT controlled. In the second song contains the messages the Moslem should did the mid-night prayer/tahajud and the early morning prayer, because that time is very special time for Moslem compare to another prayer time, the angle watched our prayer in this time, and we can more close face ALLAH SWT in this time.

Abstract

Gua Ceremony is part of Olaia tradition and an event which is interesting to analyze because there are many kinds of symbols used in it. Gua ceremony is not separated from language. By using language, we can express our thought, idea, emotion, and feeling, because language is an important aspect of human life and social communication among the members of society. It is interesting to study Gua ceremony linguistically, especially in semantic. Therefore, the researcher is interested in studying this problem by formulating five researcher problems such as: how does the process of implementation of Gua ceremony on Olaia village, sub-district Aesesa, District Nagekeo,what are the symbols and symbols meaning on Olaia village, sub-district Aesesa, District Nagekeo. What are functions of Gua ceremony on Olaia village, sub-district Aesesa, District Nagekeo, and What are values appeared from Gua ceremony on Olaia village, sub-district Aesesa, District Nagekeo? This study has two significances of the study, theoretically and practically. Theoretically, the result of this study will give the description about the symbols used in Gua ceremony. Practically, the researcher hopes this research is useful to enrich the description of Gua ceremony and as additional knowledge for people or student both from Nagekeo or others. The research of this thesis is qualitative research. It is intended to describe about the symbols, and also their meaning used in Gua ceremony. Besides the researcher himself as the key instruments, the instruments used in this study are documentation, observation, and interview. From the result of this study, it was obvious that Gua ceremony used some symbols. And every symbol has its own meaning.

Abstract

In life, there are so many problems. Problems also happen in novel. We find various kinds of problems in novel which reflect the main characters’ daily life. The problems are sometimes in the form of psychological conflict. this kind of conflict is harder to solve especially for minority people such as lesbian. It is interesting to study about psychological conflict in novel, especially in Nancy Garden novel entitled Annie On My Mind. The novel is about Liza Winthrop as the main character faces her problem as a lesbian. This novel also was banned and burnt because Nancy garden was the first author for young adults to create a lesbian love story. Therefore, the researcher has been interested in studying this problem by formulating three research problems such as: (1) How is psychological background of Liza Winthrop as the main character in Annie On My Mind novel by Nancy Garden? (2) What are psychological conflicts that Liza Winthrop got when she realized that she fall in love with Annie Kenyon in Annie On My Mind novel by Nancy Garden? (3) How Liza Winthrop character in the Annie On My Mind novel by Nancy Garden overcomes her psychological conflict ? The research design which used in this research is descriptive qualitative research since the researcher intends to describe psychological backgorund, psychological conflict, and the way overcome the conflict. The data in this research analyzed into six steps, i.e data collection, data analysis, data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and data reportation. The researcher found there are five of Liza’s Winthrop character or psychological background that is formed based on her life environment. Those are introvert, masculin, responsible, idealis, and kind-heart person. Those Liza Winthrop’s psychological background influence Liza in overcome her psychological conflict which there are two of the most of psychological conflict faced by her, they are approach-approach conflict and double approach-avoidance conflict. Finally, the researcher really hopes for the student to learn fiction deeply and enjoyed analyzing literary works. And for the lecturer in English Literature Department, lecturer can give explanation about analyzing another aspect in the literary works in order students will not bored in learning or studying fiction. Last, but not least, for the further researcher, they could take different way in analyzing the literary works.

Abstract

So’a is a district where known as one of ethnics group which has many kinds of traditional ceremony. This region is located in the north side of Flores island. There are appear the variety of culture ceremony that certainly inherited from the ancestors. In each of the ceremony appears many kinds of symbol which has a certain meaning related to the human life. One of those is Para Zedhe ceremony. This traditional ceremony is held by some people who want to reach the highest social class and they will be acquainted as Mosalaki. The study was aimed to observe the meaning of symbols used in So’a Para Zedhe ceremony. The research design used descriptive qualitative method. The key instrument of this research was the researcher himself and the tools that used in this research were observation, documentation, and interview and. The analysis of the data included separating all the data that obtained from the sample and also learned the theory. Then, understanding the data and analyzing the meaning of symbols based on the theory. The result of the data analysis revealed the meaning of every symbols used in the ceremony. The symbols meaning that appeared in Para Zedhe ceremony reflected about the existence and So’a society life. Basically, these symbols were represented by the tools, animals, plants, actions, and social life. Mostly, the symbol of animals and plants were often used by people of the tribe in So’a. Moreover, the result showed that in the investigation revealed not only about the symbols, but also the values and functions in society life.
