Abstract

Abstract: There are many methods applied by educators in teaching languages in the world. Some of them believe that traditional classroom method is considered the best, while others prefer to implement new way of teaching, using computers to assist students in learning a language. This new method is known as Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). However, not all students who are good in using computers succeed to do self-study. Such students failed to enjoy Life on the Screen, it is not about computer, it is about people and the relationships into which they enter with machines and, first of all, with themselves through computer-mediation (Debski ,1997, p. 29). To review and consolidate ideas and conditions that can be the obstacles and drawbacks to the CALL application; Debski and Gruba did a project-oriented computer assisted language learning (PrOCALL) at the University of Melbourne in two second semesters (12 weeks each) over the years 1998 –1999, involving many languages (Chinese, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian, and English as Second Language (ESL)). The result of their ProCALL project is that CALL is proven to be beneficial to tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, this success takes place both within the group of students who have both advanced and low computer skill. Australia, for example, starts to insert CALL in the curriculum, although it is limited to year 12 students only. It is a good start. Australia’s policy proofs that CALL is beneficial in schools, it means that CALL is not only beneficial for tertiary education at the University of Melbourne, but also in Victoria. This paper will also discuss about crucial matters like integrating this sophisticated technology to suit the curriculum and the importance to attract the interest of big softwares companies to invest money in CALL projects.

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini berdasar pada penelitian yang bertujuan untuk membuat pembelajar menilai sendiri hasil karangan mereka dengan menggunakan metode self-assessment. Hal ini dilakukan untuk memberi kepastian dan keyakinan bahwa metode ini bisa diterapkan di dunia pendidikan. Penelitian yang dilakukan adalah dengan mengkorelasikan antara nilai writing yang diberikan pengajar (teacher assessment) dengan self -assessement. Dari analisa data, ditemukan bahwa pembelajar yang menilai tinggi dengan metode self-assessment juga mendapatkan nilai tinggi dari pengajar (teacher assessment) sehingga hipotesa dari penelitian ini diterima. Itu artinya bahwa reliabilitas self assessment saat diterapkan di kelas masih bisa diterima, sehingga pengajar bisa melatih para mahasiswa melakukan self-assessment untuk mengetahui kemampuan diri mereka sendiri, terutama dalam bidang kecakapan menulis. Penemuan dari penelitian ini penemuan dari penelitian ini bisa meyakinkan pengajar yang hingga saat ini masih meragukan reliabilitas dari metode self-assessemnt ini. Pada awal tahun 1900-an, penilaian hasil belajar dilakukan secara ekstensif untuk mengukur kemampuan dan kecerdasan pembelajar, namun hal ini tidak dilakukan untuk membantu proses pembelajaran dan kemajuan mereka menjadi lebih baik (Becker & Shute, 2010:5). Tetapi jika pada abad ini tidak menutup kemungkinan untuk dilakukan self-assessment di mana pembelajar mengevaluasi kinerja mereka sendiri. Brown, (2004:251) mengatakan bahwa semua kecakapan (skills) bisa diukur dengan mengunakan tes tradisional, meskipun (2004:252) mengakui bahwa evaluasi alternatif seperti self assessment bisa berakibat kotraproduktif karena akan menimbulkan implikasi baru dan berbeda jika dibandingkan dengan model evaluasi belajar yang sudah ada atau teacher assessement.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Attribution theory derives from psychology in language teaching. This theory believes that success or failure in language teaching might be upon four main sets of attribution: ability, effort, luck, and task difficulty. Some L2 learners, specifically non-English department students find difficulty in speaking due to either they view themselves as incapable in learning English, they do not push themselves hard enough to learn English, or they perceive that the task given is too difficult to be completed. Target Operation (TO) Game is proposed to accommodate the problems that later, determines the success or failure of learning speaking. This research provides some examples of tasks of TO Game, descriptive results of the four sets of attribution, and the outcome of the implementation of the game.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Malang Mask dance is an example of traditions in Java specially in Malang. It is interesting even to participate. This study has two significances for readers and students of language and literature faculty. Theoretically, the result of the study will give description about the meaning of symbols used in Malang Mask dance and useful information about cultural understanding, especially in Javanese culture.

Abstract

Abstract Customary law is the law or unwritten rule that grow and thrive in a society that is only obeyed bycostom society in Belu. One of the most important customary law in Belu is the marriage law. Matrilineality system in south Belunese descent is traced through the mother and maternal ancestors.However, in this matrilineal system, there is still a customary law that maintains the father’s lineage based on customary law by adopting which called matamusanwhich is really ineresting because it is dfferent with matrilineal system in Minangkabau as the most popular matrilineal society. The research design of this thesis is descriptive qualitative research. It is intended to describe about matamusan as customary adoption system, chronological step of matamusan determination, the development of matamusan implementation, factors influencing the development of matamusan determination, and the effectiveness of customarylaw toward matamusandetermination.From the result of this study, it was clear that customary law is still effective in handle the violation of matamusan determination.

Abstract

Abstract: English students are expected to be able to produce an effective essay for the sake of their academic writing. For this purpose, they should pay attention to the rhetorical aspects of writing such as content, organization of ideas, discourse, syntax, vocabulary, and mechanics. This article presents the result of classroom action research conducted to overcome practical problems of writing an essay by using peer-assessment strategy. The subject of this study was 14 fifth-semester students of CiptaWacanaChristianUniversity of Malang taking essay writing class. In general the strategy proves effective in improving the students’ ability in writing an essay. In addition to the writing achievement, the strategy is able to improve the quality of learning process of essay writing. The students are motivated to write an essay more enthusiastically and are much aided to be a better writer; they no more think that writing is a burden, so they have a good response and an attitude to the strategy.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Reading is one of language skill, which must be developed with practice. The students learn how to read well in order to comprehend texts, either in a short text or long one. The researcher got research at English Department of FKIP of Muhammadiyah University of Malang especially Second Semesters that had a problem to comprehend English Text. The data collected from the reading test were analyzed to find the answer of problem. The steps in process were as follows: firstly, the writer corrected the student’s answer sheets; secondly, give score for each answer sheet, thirdly, identified the student’s score. This study uses descriptive method by collecting data in order to answer the question concerning status of subject of study. The subjectis second semesters that consist of 200 of students. The instrument uses to collect the data is reading test that are to know their ability in English text.The result of the analyzing of available can be interpreted that the students of English Department have mastered the English texts, and many students get problem namely 32 the students getting high score, 8 students getting lower score and the mean of value reliability items are 12,425. It means that the student’s ability in comprehending texts is good. It is hoped that teacher will make to use of this findings by giving more attention to comprehend English text in teaching and learning of English so that the student’s ability in comprehending texts can be improve.

Abstract

 ABSTRACT This research was held in SDN Gadang 1, SDN Ciptomulyo 3 and SDN Bandungrejosari 1. This research involving English Zone participants from the aforementioned three state elementary school which taken from grade 3 to the grade 6 with 560 (five hundred and sixty) of total populations. From the amount of population we decided the most representative sample using Yaname and Slovin theory with level of precision at 10%. Then, the gained sample is filtered again using the proportional allocation theory to get the expected sample. We use these theories because of the targeted population is the heterogenic community that consist of various level grade of class. To test the hypothesis of Ha: rxy ≠ 0 which means there is significant relation and effect of English Zone to the speaking ability. In analyzing the hypothesis we use the theory of correlation of Pearson Product Moment continued to the T-Test analysis and Coefficient Determination to find the amount of variable contribution percentage. The instrument of this research taken from the score gained from the questionnaire sets. The impressive results shown in this research, English Zone contribute up to 80,5% to the speaking ability improvement (the rest is determined by other variables). Key Words: English Zone, Speaking English Ability Improvement

Abstract

English is a tool used for global communication in this era, when bilinguals switch from one language to another in clause or sentence level that is called code switching. It appears not only in daily communication but also in fiction-written materials. This study was undertaken in a fiction-written material named novel, the researcher chose SUPERNOVA: Ksatria, Putri dan Bintang jatuh” novel by Dewi Lestari as the object. The study was aimed to investigate the code switching produced by the characters. This study used descriptive qualitative approach because the researcher just wanted to know and describe code-switching produced. The research instruments were; researcher, documentation and observation. The result and analysis of the study showed the details of code-switching used. There were 3 types and 6 functions of code switching from the total 21 switches which were pronounced by the characters. The three types were inter-sentential, metaphorical and tag switching. The result showed that the most dominant type was inter-sentential switching. Therefore, the six code switching functions that were found; addressee specification, interference, interjection, intimacy, reiteration and quotation.

Abstract

Soekarno stands as one of the best orator and great charisma the world has ever had. His charm and talk emersed his people. Soekarno’s speeches considered as histories record document for his nation and world widely. This study was aimed at finding the languange variation on his speeches. This was a descripive qualitative research in which data was taken by documentation . The collected data was analyzed through three steps, i.e. data reduction, data description, and conlusion. The data are first categorise into unit, then the data are categorising relate to the relationship of problem of study, and third the data are integrated to find the theory. The finding of this study revealed that first, Soekarno Javanese language use as dialectical word considered as influence of his origin and social caste as Madya level. Soekarno’s education background has a reason for him to insert Dutch words. Second, finding of Formal and Informal Register of Soekarno revealed that his professional Jargon and good structure (e.g adding and omission of prefixes or suffixes) consider as formal, besides his Common Colloquial Word and Vulgarism consider as Informal register. Third, Soekarno is differ in style while deliver a speech, he is rather to be Casual and Intimate to the citizen, besides also Formal on behave generally to them. But Soekarno tends to use Frozen style to some particular person. Soekarno also use Frozen on opening his speech his speech infront of leader of other nations without concern what will he talks in the following lines of his speech.
