Abstract

Background: Quercetin is one of the active substances in propolis which has many benefits for human health as antioxidant, anticancer, antiallergy, cardioprotector, gastroprotector, lowering blood pressure, and increase the body immunity. Quercetin content in propolis is influenced by geographical factors, differences in the season, climate, plants, bees, and the type of solvent. This study aims to determine differences of quercetin levels of propolis in the market area of ​​Surakarta. Methods: This study uses observational analytic methods. Samples of propolis were sold in the market area of ​​Surakarta. Sampling was done by purposive sampling as many as six brands of propolis which is divided into 6 groups: P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6. Each group was measured five times. Determination of quercetin in propolis by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer method of Prussian Blue. Data were analyzed for quercetin levels with one-way ANOVA statistical test using the computer program SPSS 17 for windows. Results: Average of quercetin levels of propolis samples obtained results P1 = 9.4440 ± 0.06465 µg/mL, P2 = 4.4760 ± 0.08591 µg/mL, P3 = 10.2700 ± 0.04000 µg/mL, P4 = 7.4120 ± 0.06648 µg/mL, P5 = 8.6780 ± 0.03347 µg/mL, P6 = 8.4960 ± 0.10877 µg/mL with  p < 0.001. Conclusion: There are differences of quercetin levels of propolis in the market area of ​​Surakarta. Keywords: Propolis, quercetin levels, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Prussian Blue

Abstract

Background: Propolis contains flavonoids. One of them is quersetin.  Solvent used is propolis extraction influence quercetin level of the extract. This research aims to determine whether there is a difference of Quercetin Level in Ethanol Extract Propolis and Water Extract Propolis. Methods: This research is an experimental research. Subject of this research is propolis from Gejen RT 3 RW 2, Kerjo, Karanganyar. The samples were carried out by purposive sampling. Concentration of quercetin is determined by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer by Prussian-blue methode. Five samples are made for each extract. The data then analized using unpaired t-test by SPSS 17 for windows. Results: Averages of quercetin level  in this research   are 10,0480±0,53798 µg/mL in Ethanol extract propolis and 1,0440±0,06804 µg/mL in Water Extract propolis with p < 0,05. Conclusions: There are differences in there is a difference of quercetin content in Ethanol Extract Propolis and Water Extract Propolis. Abstract

Background : Brewed green tea contains antifungal substance such as polyphenol which is considered can inhibit fungal growth.  The aim of this research is to determine antifungal effect of brewed green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) against Candida albicans growth In Vitro. Methods : The research was performed as experimental laboratory. The subject of this research were clinical sample of Candida albicans and taken randomly. This research used 7 treatment groups, they were sterilized aquadest as negative control, brewed green tea with concentration of 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%, also fluconazole 25 µg as positive control. This research was repeated four times. The plate was incubated at the temperature of 37ºC for 48 hours then inhibition diameter zone formed was measured. The data was analyzed by Linier Regression test then continued by Correlation test on IBM Statistics for Windows version 20. Results : The diameter of inhibition zone increased along with increasing concentrations, because higher concentration of brewed green tea contained more substances, and the diameter of concentration of 100% group is almost the same with diameter of positive control group. The results of statistical analysis using Linier Regression test showed that there are significant differences on seven of treatment groups (p < 0,05)  and the Correlation test showed that there are close relation between concentration of brewed green tea and the diameter of inhibition zone. Conclusion : Brewed green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) has antifungal effect against Candida albicans growth In Vitro. Start from concentration of 60% up to 100%, there were antifungal effect, and the antifungal effect of concentration of 100% is close to  fluconazole  25 µg/ml. Abstract

Background: Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) has a terapeutic effect, such as antibacterial, anthelmintic and imunomodulator. This research was performed to understand the effect of Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) fruit extract on death time of  Ascaris suum, Goeze In Vitro. Methods: This research was performed using experimental laboratory method with post-test only controlled group design. Adult Ascaris suum, Goeze (108 worms) were divided into 9 groups. The worms treated with NaCl 0.9 % solution and Piperazine 0.4% g/ml served as negative control and positive control group consecutively. The worms treated with increasing dose of  Mengkudu fruits (Morinda citrifolia) extract (1% g/ml, 2% g/ml, 4% g/ml, 6% g/ml, 8% g/ml, 10% g/ml, and 12% g/ml) served as treatment groups. Observations were performed every half hour until the worms died. LC50 and LT50 were calculated using probit analysis. Statistic analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test continued by Post hoc Test with Bonferroni correction. Results: Probit analysis showed that LC50 and LT50 of Mengkudu fruits extract were 4.94% g/ml and 703.32 minutes. Kruskall-Wallis test showed that significance difference at least in the two groups. Post Hoc Mann-Whitney with Bonferroni correction test showed that treatment had significant difference (p < 0.001) to negative control and 12% g/ml group had significant difference to positive control group. Conclusions: Mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia) fruits extract can induce Ascaris suum death with the death time faster than standard medicine. Abstract

Background: Guava leaves contain tannins and saponins that have been known to have anthelmintic effect. This study aimed  to determine the effect of guava leaf extract toward mortality of Ascaris suum, Goeze in vitro Methods: The study was a laboratory experimental research using the post-test only controlled group design. Subjects were adult Ascaris suum, Goeze. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Subjects were divided into 7 groups, each group consisting of 5 worms, replication performed 4 times. Saline solution was used in negative control group, pirantel pamoate 5 mg/ml was used in positive control group, while the treatment group used guava leaf extract concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Worms were immersed in the test solution at 25 mL and was incubated at 37̊. Observations were made every 1 hour for 7 hours and counted the number of dead worms for 7 hours. Data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Mann Whitney test and probit analysis. Results: Total number of dead worms after 7 hours of observation in the negative control group was 0, guava leaf extract concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% respectively by 4, 7, 12, 20, and 20, and in the positive control group was 20. Kruskal Wallis test results showed a significant difference, while Mann Whitney test showed some significant and unsignificant differences among those groups (p <0.05 and p> 0.05). Probit analysis showed LC50 and LC90 respectively at concentration 54.320% and 74.516%.. Conclusions: Based on this study, it can be concluded that the guava leaf extract affects mortality of Ascaris suum, Goeze in vitro, the increased concentration of extract increases the number of deaths of worms. Abstract

Background: White Soybean (Glycine max) Milk Ultra High Temperature (UHT) is potential to protect gaster because it contains flavonoid. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of white soybean milk UHT on mice’s gaster due to aspirin. Higher dose of the milk reduces the damaged on gastric mucous induced by aspirin Methods: This was a labroratory experimental research with posttest only controlled group design conducted in in Histology Laboratory of Sebelas Maret University. The samples were thirty five mice divided into 5 groups. Negative control group (KN) was given normal food and aquadest, positive control group (KP) was given aspirin dose 2,275 mg/20g Body weight (W), dan first treatment group (P1) was given cimetidine dose 0,78 mg/20g W second treatment group (P2) and third treatment group (P3) was given soybean milk UHT dose 0,7ml/20 g W and 1,4 ml/20 g W. All treatments for KN, KP, P1 , P2, P3 was given in 10 days. Aspirin was given to KP, P1 , P2, P3 with dose 2,275 mg/20g weight of mice on day 8, 9 and 10. to evaluate the  level of damage based on histologic appearance, gastric staining was performed using Haem eos. Results: Kruskal-Wallis test result showed significant result among four groups. Mann-Whitney showed significant result for KN compared to KP,P1,P2 , P3 and KP compared to P1, P2 and P3 ; while P1 compared to P2, P3 and P2 compared to P3 had no significant result. Conclusion: White Soybean (Glycine max) Milk Ultra High Temperature(UHT) protect mice’s gastric from gastritis. However, higher dose of White Soybean (Glycine max) Milk Ultra High Temperature(UHT) does not increase the protective effect of white soybean milk UHT on mice’s gaster due to aspirin. Abstract

Background: Elderly women will experience a condition due to the aging process called menopause. The onset of menopause in one woman to the others is diverse depending on its modifying factors. Marital status is suspected as one of modifying factors besides the environmental factors like pollution and radiation, smoking, obesity, numbers of children and chemotherapy. Bogor, one of the city in West Java, has 452 women with unmarried status which are on the edge of menopause. This purpose of this research is to understand the correlation between onset of menopause and marital status. Methods: This research used analytical observational studies with cross sectional approach by using purposive sampling technique which had been done in June until July 2011. The number of samples was 60 women coming from six region of Bogor who were appropriate to the required inclusion criteria. The data was collected through interviewing and answering the questionnaire by respondent. The data as a result were analyzed statistically by Chi Square analysis by using SPSS 17.0. Results: The result of Chi Square analysis was 4,286 as X2 count. This result was more than X2 table for the standard of significance 5% and the degree of freedom 1, which was 3,841 (p<0,05). From counting of Odds Ratio (OR) the result was 3. Conclusions:. There was a relation between onset of menopause and marital status. Unmarried woman would face early menopause onset three times higher than the married ones. Keywords: Onset of Menopause  – Marital Status

Abstract

Background: Height is an important clinical indicator to derive Body Mass Index (BMI) and also to estimate Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). However, height measurement in someone who cannot stand properly like the elderly or lower ekstremity abnormality may become difficult. Therefore, estimating height with another antropometric measurement may become a solution. In another study, arm span showed the highest correlation with standing height. The different morfologic between male and female also important to find the different estimating height formula. Objectives: This research aimed to know arm span to height ratio data in students from Medicine Faculty 2008 of Sebelas Maret University and the differences of arm span to height ratio between male and female. Methods: This research was an analytical observational research with cross sectional approach. The sample data collected using purposive sampling method within inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the population, 60 samples (30 males and 30 females) chose by simple random sampling method, then measured their height and arm  span. Height measured in anatomical position using microtoise staturmeter. Arm span measured using ruler tape from the longest finger in right hand to the longest finger in left hand. All data analyzed using normality test Kolmogorov-Smirnov and followed with t-independent test if the distribution data showed normal. Results : T-independent test result p = 0.03 (p < 0.05). Abstract

Background: Today, consuming paracetamol as an analgesic antipyretic drugs has  increased. Paracetamol which used in inappropriate dose has bad effect to our body, such as nefrotoxic. Basil leaf extract has antioxidant as a protection of free radicals and reducing NAPQI which produced by paracetamol. The objectives of this research are to know the nefroprotector effect and this research will shown the multilevel dose of basil leaf extract as a nefroprotector in the renal cell damage induced by parasetamol. Methods: This was experimental laboratory with the post test only controlled group design. Sample group consisted of male mice Swiss Webster, 2-3 month, + 20 g. Samples divided into 4 groups, each group has seven mice. Mice for control group (K) and the first treatment group (P1) were given aquades for 14 days. The second treatment group (P2) will be given basil leaf extract dose I for 14 days. The third treatment group (P3) will be given basil leaf extract dose II for 14 days. Paracetamol will be given to P1, P2, and P3, with dose 0,1 ml/20 gr weight of mice on the day 12, 13, and 14. Finally on day 15th, mice are sacrificed with neck dislocation then the renal of mice was made preparations with paraffin blocks methods and Hematoxillin Eosin staining. Renal cell damage observed and counted a mount of scored on renal histological karyopyknosis, karyorrhexis, and karyolysis. Data are analized by One-Way ANOVA test (α= 0,05) and continued by Post Hoc Multiple Comparisons test (LSD) (α = 0,05). Results: Result of One-Way ANOVA shown that there was a significant of degree between 4 groups. Result of LSD method there was a significant of degree between K-P1, K-P2, P1-P2, and P1-P3 groups; and also it wasn’t a significant of degree between K-P3 and P2-P3. Conclusions: The basil leaf extracts was able to decrease the renal cell damaging of mice and the increase of basil leaf extracts dose followed by the increase of protection effect to the renal cell damaging of mice which is induced by paracetamol.   Keywords: basil leaf extract, paracetamol, renal cell damage.

Abstract

Background: Antioxidants in guava fruit are vitamin C, flavanoid, and lycopene which are estimated having hepato-protective function. The objectives of this research are to know the effect of guava fruit extract and in various doses on mice liver damage induced by acetaminophen. Methods: Samples of 28 male mice, Swiss webster type, 2-3 months old age and + 20gr of each weight, were divided into 4 groups of 7 mice. Guava fruit extract was given for 14 days in a row, while acetaminophen in toxic dose was given on the 12th, 13th, and 14th day. The score of hepatocyte damage was determined by pyknosis, karyorhexis, and karyolysis. The data was analized by One-Way ANOVA test (α= 0,05) and continued by Post Hoc Multiple Comparisons using Least Significant Differences(LSD) test(α= 0,05). Results:The group with the highest average damage of hepatocyte is KP1(84,23±3,207), and the groups with decrease average damage of hepatocyte are KP2 (48,76±2,964) and KP3(35,23±2,755). The results of One-Way ANOVA test showed a significant difference in all group (p<0.001). The statistical data result showed a significant difference of hepatic damage between K-P1, K-KP2, K-KP3, KP1-KP2, KP1-KP3, and KP2-KP3. Conclusion: Guava fruit extract can decrease the histological damage of the hepatocyte of mice induced by acetaminophen. The higher dose of guava fruit extract, the higher protection effect againts liver histological damage from acetaminophen toxic on mice.
