Abstract

A study about gastrointestinal helminths of Mesocricetus auratus (Waterhause, 1839) in Padang, West Sumatera was conducted from March to July 2013. This study was aimed to identify species of gastrointestinal helminths and to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths of M. auratus in Padang. Sampling was conducted by using Purposive methods. Those samples were examined by using direct observation, floating-centrifuge and sedimentation method. A total of four helminths species that belonging to two phylums and four orders was collected. The obtained helminths were Hymenolepis nana Siebold, 1852 (Cyclophyllidea), Syphacia obvelata Rudolphi, 1802 (Ascaridida), Sp. 1 (Strongylida), and Sp. 2 (Enoplida). The prevalence of Syphacia obvelata, Hymenolepis nana, Sp. 1 and Sp. 2 were 57,1%, 50%, 17,1% and 17,1%, respectively.

Abstract

One of prospective banana collections at Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute is Ambon kuning (Gros michel) origins from Jambi. The aim of the study was to find out the response of Ambon kuning to some Vegetative Compatibility Groups (VCGs) of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. The research was conducted from November 2012 to February 2013 in the laboratory of plant disease and the screen house of Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institute of Solok. The treatment used a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 6 treatments and 4 replications, each treatment consisted of 5 plants. Treatments were 6 isolates of Foc VCGs 01213/16, 0121, 01219, 0123, 0124/5, 0120/15, those were the Indonesian Tropical Fruits Research Institutes collection. The parameters observed were percentage of plants infected, the incubation period, index of diseases severity on leaves and corm. Data was analyzed by analysis of variance. The results showed that Ambon kuning (Gros Michelcv) was resistant to Foc VCG 01219 and VCG 0120, moderately resistant to Foc VCG 0123, susceptible to Foc VCG 0121 and VCG 0124/5, and highly susceptible to Foc VCG 01213/16 Keywords: banana, resistance variety, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, Vegetative Compatibility Group (VCG)

Abstract

Study about ants species (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) at campus building was conducted in Andalas University Limau Manis Padang from September 2012 to April 2013. Direct collection method and baited traps were used to collect ants at 12 building. A total of 11 species that belonging to four subfamily, six tribe, and 11 genera and 859 individual of ant was collected. Myrmicinae was the highest in number of species (four species), followed by Dolichoderinae (three species) only two species were found as Formicinae and Ponerinae. Six of collected species are recognized as ant pests. Keywords: ant, pest, campus, building

Abstract

The research about compotition and structure community of zooplankton in lake Singkarak has been done from March 2013 until May 2013. This study used purposive method and zooplankton sampling was done by using vertical filtering from 10 stations. The results shown that there were 16 species zooplankton with Crustacea (8 species), Protozoa (3 species) and Rotifera (5 species). Average population density of zooplankton were 32.43 ind./l with varying type on each station. Diversity index were 0.79-1.52 and highest was found at station II and IX (H’=1.73) and lowest was found at station IV (H’=1.73). Equitability index was 0.32-0.91% higest was found at station X (E=0.91) and lowest was found at station IV (E=0.32). Similarity index was 31.25-76.92%. Based on the diversity index of zooplankton show that the community was relatively stable. Key words : Singkarak, Zooplankton, Structure, Composition, Community

Abstract

An investigation on the changes of individual number and distribution pattern of Schismatoglottis lancifolia Hall. et Englar at permanent forest plots in Bukit Pinang-Pinang has been carried out from September 2012 to December 2012. The results showed that populations of Schismatoglottis lancifolia was 51.63% decreased when compared to the previous observations in 1985. The distribution pattern of the species was clumped (Morishita Index : 3.2) that was similar pattern reported in 1985. Distribution pattern was influenced by relative light intensity due to topography variations. Keywords: Bukit Pinang-pinang, distribution population, Schismatoglottis lancifolia.

Abstract

A study on growth of turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria Rosc.) inoculated with Arbuscular Mycorrhizzal Fungi (AMF) isolated from the rhizosphere of Situngkek (Hornstedtia scyphifera Steud.) was done from March to August 2013 in the wire house and in Plant Physiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Andalas University. The aim of this study was to determine the growth of white turmeric inoculated with several doses of AMF. The experiment used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments, control (A) and four replications. The inoculation doses were 10 g / Plant AMF (B), 20 g / plant AMF (C), 30 g / Plant AMF (D), 40 g / Plant AMF (E), 50 g / Plant AMF (F). The results showed that AMF inoculation gave no significant effect on plant height, number of leaf, leaf width and dry weight of turmeric. The highest root infection was 30 gr/plant (74.83 %). Generally, turmeric plant have a dependency on FMA inoculation with less and sufficient criteria of Habte and Manjunath. Keyword: Curcuma zedoaria, Mycorrhizal, Growth.

Abstract

The study about composition and structure weed of rice field (Oryza sativa L.) in vegetative phase in Singkarak, Solok, West Sumatra was conducted from June to September 2013 by using squares method with purposive sampling plots. The result founded weeds consist of 6 families, 10 species and 5245 individuals. Fimbristylis miliacea showed the highest value of SDR (Summed Dominance Ratio) (36.17%) and the lowest was Hedyotis diffusa (1.61). The diversity index was H'= 1.60 (high). Abstract

Ethnobotany studies of Balimau tradition in Pariaman has been conducted from July to October 2012. The purpose of this study was to determine the plant species and their significance used for the Balimau tradition in Pariaman. This study was conducted using survey methods, interview, and direct plant sample collections in the field. The samples were identified at Herbarium Universitas Andalas (ANDA). The cultural significance used of plant for Balimau tradition was determined using Index of Cultural Significance (ICS). The result showed that 13 species belonging to 10 families were identified as plant species that used in Balimau tradition, namely: Cananga odorata (Annonaceae), Michelia alba (Magnoliaceae), Michelia champaca (Magnoliaceae), Jasminum sambac (Oleaceae), Pandanus amaryllifolius (Pandanaceae), Vetiveria zizanioides (Poaceae), Rosa hybrida (Rosaceae), Ixora javanica (Rubiaceae), Citrus aurantifolia (Rutaceae), Citrus hystrix (Rutaceae), Murraya paniculata (Rutaceae), Mimusops elengi (Sapotaceae), and Alpinia sp. (Zingiberaceae). Citrus aurantifolia has the highest ICS value indicated that the species was commonly used in the ritual of Balimau. Abstract

The district of Pariaman has a conservation site for sea turtles, including olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea L.). Several reports have stated that fungus infect egg of the turtles and caused the failure of hatching. However, there is no study on this site yet. The aim of this study was to identify fungus on turtle's egg, hatched and inhatched nest sand. Collection and identification were conducted from December 2012 until June 2013 in turtles’ breeding in Pariaman and Microbiology Laboratory of Biology Department of Mathematic and Natural Sience, Andalas University. Result showed that Fusarium sp. 1, Fusarium sp. 2, Fusarium sp. 3, Fusarium sp. 4, Fusarium sp. 5, Fusarium sp. 6, Fusarium sp. 7 dominated among identified fungus, other were Aspergillus sp. 1 and Trichoderma sp. 1 and than there was no fungus found on hatched egg. Abstract

An experiment of giving mulch of rice straw (Oryza sativa) on weeds and crop production soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr) has been carried out at the Laboratory of Plant Ecology, Andalas University, Padang from June to September 2013. The purpose of this study was to determine and define how mulch of rice straw suppress weed growth and increase the production of soybeans. This experiment used a Completely Randomized Design with five treatments and five replications. The result showed that rice straw mulching of 300g/10kg can suppressed the growth of weeds, and rice straw mulching of 500g/10kg could increase soybean production. All treatments showed significantly influence on the increase weight of soybeans product. Keyword: mulch, rice straw, soybean, weeds
