Abstract

This article is aimed to present Kunto in three different angles: religion, arts and science. Religion here means the thought of Kunto in dealing with Islamic religious thought (objectivity). Arts may mean Kunto’s thought on literature (prophetic literature) and science here may be defined as Kunto’s thought on social and cultural sciences, particularly on historical sciences (Islamic historiography in Indonesia). Based on this, the writer may call ‘three worlds’ of Kunto as a religious man, an artist and a scientist at the same time (historian and culturalist). These three intermingled words are what the writer refers as intellectual ascetism, which should, not to say must, be possessed by all scientists of any disciplines.

Along with the global development, ‘pete-pete’ has gone through multi meanings, not only as one mode of public transports, but also as a medium, an actor, and even a stage for activists to fundamentally establish public spaces for social interaction. Moreover, ‘pete-pete’ is also an entity to willingly attract political power on a regular basis, through social discourses or implementation of urban planning. Abstract

This paper tries to explain the practice of marginalization of minority groups and the absence of multiculturalism in Sampang. The preference of the government of Sampang to relocate Shi’i’s Muslim community in the context of conflict resolution, can be read as an attempt to exclude minorities. At the same time, multiculturalism ignored when policy options are taken only for the sake of electoral moment. Therefore, at the end of discussion, this paper emphasizes the need for improvement of the boarding school education system and revitalizing the role of ulama’ to keep multiculturalism and prevent acts of violence against minorities.

Abstract

Islam and modernity has been encountering each other for such a long time since the colonialism period to the contemporary situation of global politics in the post of September 11th 2001. The result of such encounter varies, depending upon the complexity of the changeably deteriorating situation of Muslims themselves. The development of political Islam is not alien to the context of international relation. The contemporary model of Islamic renaissance should consider the development of global interconnection in one hand, and the escalation of anti-Islam and anti-immigrant sentiments in the West on the other.

Abstract

This research was carried out using descriptive content analysis method with the purpose of revealing the tendency of some local newspapers such as Fajar, Tribun TImur, and Sindo in covering the demonstration of Bersih (Clean) 4.0 in Kuala Lumpur which was published on August 29, 2015 to September 2, 2015. The results of this research show the similarities and differences of news coverage of Fajar, Tribun Timur, and Sindo in reporting the demonstration. In reporting the news, Fajar, Tribun Timur, and Sindo have tendency to lean to sup[ort the agenda of the demonstrators instead of supporting the Malaysian government in its program of Bersih 4.0. All three also apply the theory of agenda setting and focusing more on war journalism, than peace journalism.

Abstract

This article explores the issue of the establishment of Pakistan as an Islamic state. Its political process was initiated after the independence of India when the Indian governmental system was based on constitution which ignored the multi-ethnic and muti-religious community in India. Muslims as minority group in India at that time felt ignored and did not play significant role in the state government. After the world war I, political consolidation and movement to establish an Islamic state had been initiated by uniting support from Muslim leaders to form Indial Muslim League. The struggle to establish a new Islamic state was not in vain. Pakistan was a name to the new state with Islamic concepts as the main reference in governing its society. This new Islamic state, later on, dismissed the word ‘Islam’ and needed further rational and liberal redefinition on what the country should be led to.

This article aims to analyze whether the position of women in the domestic sphere and the public from a gender perspective, according to Islamic normativism. Gender equality can be understood as a concept that refers to the roles and responsibilities of men and women as a result of social construction that can be changed in accordance with the changing times. Basically Islam does not regulate the area of women and men in the schematic. Islam leaving certain areas to be regulated by human reason based on the demands that are constantly evolving. This view is believed should not deviate from the spirit and teachings of the religion itself, because basically we all recognize the universality of religion from the outset. Without prudence, universality and ease of religion will be lost to the ages.
