This study tries to see the potential area of Islamic discourses related to coffee and coffee shop. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, wherein the data derived from literature and ethnographic studies, the result revealed that there are set of matters which were missed by scholarly attention in the flow of changes and developments of Muslim society, both in the historical and contemporary space. There are a number of potential areas of the Islamic studies that can be developed through coffee and coffee shops, including the study of texts that include particular historical narratives and historical ideas related to these two material elements; Sufism, coffee, and coffee shop interrelations; the presence of Muslim women in public spaces, especially in the coffee shops; and harmony and diversity as a result of Muslim encounters with coffee and coffee shops, which can be seen for example through the framework of inter-religious relations.

Abstract

This article tries to track genealogy of the Islamic revolutionary paradigm of thought in NU and its various possibilities have arisen. Based on the library studies using the analytical discourse approach, the result revealed that the genealogy of the Islamic paradigm of NU was born due to the internal and external dialectics bridged by multi-epistemology. Based on the 'political reconciliation' event which is called 'returning to khittah 1926' in Situbondo in 1984, NU experienced a shift orientation, not only in the political sphere but also paradigmatically. Hereby, there was social-intellectual mobility marked by the proliferation of social and intellectual discourse among NU’s young generation. The dominance of this activity leading to revolutionary movement in the field of NU’s Islamic paradigm: Aswaja's theology which was originally understood as a doctrine became a thinking methodology (manhaj alfikr); expansion of the legal institution's methodology, from qauly to manhajy; and shifting political struggle, from structural political arena to cultural politics. This discourse became massive among Nu’s young generation caused by the support of Abdurrahman Wahid, the ideal figure known as a locomotive of the NU cultural movement.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the story of Moses and Khidzir as one of the Islamic narrative treasures in the Qur’an. Through Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structural-anthropology approach, to see the structure of mind that works in the story, the results showed that the story of Moses and Khidzir has a certain structure, which is appeared in the structure of non-ladunni and ladunni knowledge. The structure of knowledge can be seen from the existence of binary-opposition relation between Musa and Khidzir and the relation transformation in each episode of the story. Considering the structural-anthropology, the structure of the story must be identified in the human culture. Hereby, the ethnographic methods required to be used, in which the result revealed that the story of Moses and Khidzir believed as a code used by God to convey the general law of knowledge. The contribution of this study in the Qur’anic and socio-cultural studies is on the use of structural-anthropology approach, not only to analyze ‘parole’ and ‘langue’ of Qur’anic language but also to uncover the Qur’anic mind and identifying its existence in the human culture.

Abstract

This study tries to describe the behavioral-practice and to find out the meaning behind the symbols represented by the Kebumen society through the Rajaban tradition. Kebumen, which is known as the meeting point between the traditions of Islamic Mataram of Yogyakarta which is identically close to the culture of priyayi, and the Banyumasan tradition which is identically known as peripheral community, become its unique consideration of the selected locations of the study. Through an ethnographic approach, based on the theoretical basis of symbolic functionalism as its analysis perspective, the results of the study showed that there is a layer of meaning represented by various symbols used by the Kebumen community during the Rajaban tradition practice. First, the social meaning is the orientation of the community in presenting “berkat”. The “berkat”’s form and model representing the socio-economic status of its provider. Second, "janengan" as an important part in the process of reciting the Prophet's prayer, is believed to be one form of respect for the da'wah that has been carried out by the Wali in spreading Islam in Java.

Abstract

This study discusses John Wansbrough's thoughts on Alquran interpretations, which emphasize the two important points as its focus of the study; interpretation paradigm and positioning of the scriptural interpretations. Based on the content analysis method as its analytical tool from the various works, both those directly and indirectly related to Wansbrough's thoughts, the results of this study showed that there are two lines of understanding of interpretations: first, the interpretation is seen as an act of interpreting the scriptures, in which in its process there are rules, work procedures, and thinking patterns that continue to grow. The existence of an exegete becomes a parameter of the interpretations produced. Interpretation and exegete are two things that are interrelated each other. Second, interpretation has an exegetical device inherent in the interpreter, which then produce the exegetical types of explicative elements or procedural devices used by an interpreter.

Abstract

This article tries to describe the concept of integration-interconnection of science as a meeting point to integrating the mind and revelation. A concept which is positioning human mind and revelation as entities that are not dichotomous, but as relationships that complement to each other, as well as an effort to answer the complexity of the human problems which require a comprehensive and holistic process of settlement. Through critical-analytical studies of the concepts of integration-interconnection of science from various experts, the results of the study show that the term, forms, and implementations of this scientific paradigm are very diverse. Integration is not a single paradigm concept that is suitable in various life contexts, but a dynamic concept. The context in which human a being live will determine the patterns and forms of integration. Space and time, the types of problems and needs, and human creativity in responding the various life problems greatly determine the format and form of this paradigm.
