Abstract

The aims of this research are to  to investigate, formulate and reason speech functions and its realization coding used on EFL classroom interaction discourse at Universitas Riau Kepulauan.by using A descriptive research design by taking nine subject materials as the source of the data. They are They are; Curriculum and Material Development, Cross Culture Understanding,  Statistik Pendidikan,  Morphology,  TEFL,  Language Testing, Syntax, English Teaching Media and Prose subject materials. The result shows that the most dominant coding was congruent coding, the reason of chosing dominant coding was influenced by two facor, they were; subject material and the formality of the situation. By using he congruent coding, the students could understand the message of the subject materials rather than metaphor coding, because metaphore coding refers to the daily interaction with complext contextual relation.

Abstract

 This research was aimed to analyze indirectness of the lexical choices used in making offers of sale of ‘sex’ among prostitutes in Surabaya.  The data obtained from of transcribed oral interactions among the ‘sellers’ and the clients. the subjects can be categorized as lower class prostitutes who offer their service for the price ranging from Rp.50,000,00 to 70.000,00 for one session  The rates of the sex services are based on four criteria: length of service, age and physical features (for example skin colour and body shape) of the prostitutes as well as the skills they possess. The subjects also revealed that when the clients haggled for a price lower than the pasarane (standard price) price offered, it is a sign that the clients are of the lower socio-economic status.  Observations of the subjects in action revealed that the subjects do indeed confirm or adjust the judgements made during the initial assessments of the clients’ social status as they begin to speak to the potential clients.Although Indonesian language is preferred, when Javanese language was used, lexical choices were made based on the different speech levels. Abstract

Abstract                This research is focused on Project Based Learning and collaboration skill of students. It is aimed to describe how Project Based Learning promotes students’ collaboration skill with others as one of four Cs skills in 21st of Century Skills. The subject of this study was five students in the ninth grade in one of state Islamic schools in Kediri. The researcher collected the data from observation and the recording video of the process of creating the project, which was wall magazine. The observation was done twice and the activities during the process of making wall magazine will be written in field note and recorded by using video recorder. This research highlights more on the process of creating the project rather than the product. Therefore, all the data will be in the form of verbal and non-verbal data. After selecting the appropriate data, the result shows that the students can reach all of indicators of collaboration skills with eleven examples as the evidences. In short, it can be concluded that Project Based Learning can promote students’ collaboration.Keywords : Project Based Learning, Collaboration Skill, Wall Magazine, Junior High School

Abstract

 This article is written with title The Effect of Environmental t Technique to the Student Achievement in Learning Vocabulary in Yunior High School  SMPN 30  at Batam. English as an international language is used in countries throughout the World, including Indonesia. Last few years, English has been taught at Junior High School. It has been accepted in Indonesia in line with the government’s plan on the nine-year compulsory study. Based on the 2013 curriculum, English at Junior High School level is taught as local content to serve the need of the local community. In this study, The Writer attempted to use an action research as methodology in teaching English vocabulary to young learners, particularly to the first graders.  In applying this study, the writer use the instruments.The instruments of the study in this research are a Environmental technique, tests, field notes and a questionnaire. After giving all the instrument, the writer analyze the result using statistical formulas. Then the writer compared the results in pre-test and post-test.

Abstract

Feminism, as a movement of a woman to demand equality and justice, fight for sexist exploitation and oppression. The movement is triggered by the awareness that the women have equal right with me. In society, woman discriminated by rules and culture. By all means, women can not accept the action of society that makes them intimidated. The methodology of the study was descriptive qualitative. Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El-Sadawi is a novel describes how hard the condition of a woman, named Firdaus, who wanted to struggle her rights, not only as a woman but also as human. The study described about feminism, a woman struggle for their rights that found in the Novel. Firdaus had to crouch, because she killed a pimp who wanted to price her, before she was on gallows. She did not feel fear of die, whereas she felt that she became a free woman without man around. She struggle for her right as woman by defending to be passive for all that accussed to her.  Keywords: feminism, analysis, novel

Abstract

The study was aimed to describe kinds of speech function that used by the main character in A Little Princess novel. It was found in some statements from Sara Crewe in this novel. The research design applied qualitative research in which used the theory from Janet Holmes to categorize the utterances derived from list of data found in A Little Princess novel into 8 kinds of speech function (expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, phatic, poetic, heuristic and commissive). All of the classified data was interpreted concern with description of situation. Each of them was analysed based on Holmes’  theory. The result of this research showed that there found fifty Crewe’s utterances contained only five speech functions terms: expressive, directive, referential, phatic and commissive. From the result of the data analysis, it showed that the most dominant kind of speech function that used by Sara Crewe is expressive function as much as twenty utterances.It is hoped that by understanding kinds of speech functions and the use of them can help us create good communication and relationship with others. People need to understand the meaning to get the point to give appropriate responds to the speakers. Moreover, for EFL students, it can be contributed as one of analysis in sociolinguitics learning so that they can apply them in their utterances or statements. Lastly, it is hoped that this study can enrich the research in linguistics field especially for the term of speech function

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the novel Ayat-ayat Cinta 2 which was written by Habibirahman El-Shirazy. This study analyzed the usage of English loanwords in the novel, particularly English phrase in the novel. The data analyzed based the descriptive qualitative research based the the text of the novel. The data found of the  novel Ayat-ayat Cinta 2 is 19 data, which consist of the adjective +noun is 4 data. The Noun + noun is 12, and the Noun + adjective is 3. So, the data is mostly dominated the noun + noun. This study concluded that the usage of the  English loanwords of the novel have meaning that to make conversation more easy, and the other reason is too difficult to find equal meaning in Indonesian language. In addition, English loanwords also shows a social status as the intellectual person who always used international, particularly English in his communication.             Keywords: English,  phrases, loanwords, and novel

Abstract

Quran is the guidance from Allah for all the muslims which is contained of prohition and command derived by Arabic Language. All Muslims have not been surely understand with Arabic Language. Thus, there are so many translation of Quran. The most important is the meaning included in Quran should be understood by Muslims. This study analyzes the meaning of Surah Ar-Rahman based on the relations of each elements of word realized in Taxonomic Relations from Martin and Rose (2007). It is analyzed by qualitative data analysis. The data is taken from the Quran Tafsir App by Ibnu Katsir from the verse 1-78. The data of the study are clauses contained taxonomic relations by applied interactive models of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings of the analysis found four types of taxonomic relations in Surah Ar-Rahman, included repetition, contrast, class, and member. Repetition is the most frequently type found. It is indicated that this Suroh aims to warn men and jinn for grateful in every favors of Allah.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the causes of depression experienced by the main character of the “Decides to Die”Movie with used theory have been raised by the professional. The causes of depression was a problem in the family as well as the encouragement depression as a factor in alcohol abuse, drug abuse, hormonal change thought and behaviours. The purpose of this research was to analyze the causes of depression of the main character of “Decides to Die”movie. This research was used on the theory psychological approach. This research explained the main character named Veronika began to depression caused because of a problem in a relationship marriage her husband affair with another woman without the knowledge of Veronika because she is busied worked. Finally, Veronika experienced depression began to consume the drug, and also consumed alcohol and finally she thought wanted to end her life. As a conclusion, based on movie script and scene through Kenneth B Wells psychological approach theory, the causes depression of the Veronika the first is caused there was a third person in Veronika household, the second consumes many drug and induced with dependence the drug and Veronika also consume a bottle alcohol  that can increase her life is not controlled. The last is thought of Veronika want try to die,and behaviour of Veronika was hated all the people and belonged her parents.

Abstract

Understanding an utterance is one of the goal in listening comprehension. An utterance consists of words and clauses that has a structure to bond them. It is interesting to find out whether the student’s knowledge of grammatical structure has a role in their listening comprehension. Thus, the aim of this research was to find out whether any effect of grammatical knowledge towards student’s listening comprehension. The data of student’s listening comprehension were administered through a listening test of TOEFL by Phillips. While, the data for student’s grammatical knowledge were assessed by grammar test by Azar. The participants of this study were eighty students of English Department Universitas Riau kepulauan taken by purposive sampling. Then, tukey test was used to analyze the data. The finding showed that student’s grammatical knowledge had an effect on their listening comprehension. Thus, it is recommended for test takers not only to learn listening skills such as pronunciation, or vocabulary, but it is also important to master grammatical knowledge such as negative with comparative which have superlative meaning, double negative expression meaning statement positive, knowing the subjects in passive sentences, multiple nouns, and others to be able to increase listening comprehension.
