Abstract

Abstract

This research proposes a new perspective in analyzing emotion stative verbs, i.e. starting from meaning to form, by presenting the evidence from the Asahan Malay language. The data was collected by using questionnaire, observation, interview, and intuition methods. The analysis concerns the mapping of semantic components of emotion stative verbs, which is used to determine their subcategory. For the analysis, the semantic primes of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage theory are applied. The study shows that emotion stative verbs of Asahan Malay are characterized by the component ‘X felt something not because X wanted this’. In accordance with the types of events, emotion stative verbs are divided into four subcategories: (1) ‘something bad has happened’ (“sodih-like”), (2) ‘something bad can/will happen’ (“takut-like”), (3) ‘people can know something bad about me’ (“malu-like”), and (4) ‘I don’t think that things like this can/will happen’ (“heran-like”).

Abstract

This journal entitled Types of IndonesianReduplication as the Translation Equivalence of English Lexiconsinvestigates the types of Indonesian reduplications and how the English lexicons are translated in Indonesian reduplications. The data of the research is drawn from an English narrative textbook “The Magic” (Byrne, 2012) and its translation version in Indonesian “The Magic” (Purwoko, 2012). This study reveals three types of reduplications with their own distinctive forms and varieties on meaning implications, namely: full reduplication, partial reduplication, and imitative reduplication. Full reduplication consists of four sub-categories, namely: reduplication of simple words, reduplication of complex words, reduplication of bases within a complex word, and reduplication without corresponding single bases. The results of the research show that meaning is structured and therefore, it can be analyzed and represented into another language. English inflectional and derivational morphology can correspond productively to Indonesian reduplications. A menu of affixes of both English and Indonesian are the corresponding features of the morphological processes and the meaning components involvedin the translation equivalence analysis. The translation equivalence is then established by textual equivalence and formal correspondence or by contextual relations of the contextual meaning and relatable situational features of grammatical functions of the English lexicons into Indonesian reduplications.

Abstract

Abstract It is usual for non-native EFL teachers to use code switching and or code mixing as a medium of instruction due to a number of factors such as inadequate oral ability of the teachers, complexity level of teaching topics, curriculum and poor basic English of the students. However it is unusual if the teachers of great oral ability maximize if not always use code switching for most of the time during instruction. The present article tries to explain the code switching and or code mixing performed by the EFL teachers in senior high schools spreading over the West Timor land, the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur and the factor of “individual preferences” as their reason why teachers of great oral ability favor to use code switching and or code mixing during classroom instruction like those of lower or inadequate oral ability of English. The data recorded and presented in this article prove that the teachers use code switching in four types that might be similar or different from those in other places in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article is discussing about the formation of ergative verb in Hokkien. A language can be called as ergative if the patient (P) of the transitive verb is treated equally or conferential with the subject (S) in the intransitive clause and is different from the agent (A) of the transitive verb. Ergative verb treats P equally with S. It is usually no indication for both. Accusative sentence is a sentence which has a system where A is equal with S and is different with P. However, active sentence is a type of sentence which shows a group of S which are acting the same with P and a group of S which are acting the same with A in a language. In Hokkien, most verbs can be used intransitively, but usually this does not change the subject’s role. For example, “? c?ak m?en pau” (He eats bread) (transitive) and “? c?ak” (He eats) (intransitive), where the only difference is that the latter does not determine what is eaten. By contrast, with ergative verbs, the subject’s role changes; such as “Jack ph?? phua pua” (Jack broke the plate) (transitive) dan “pua phua” (the broken plate) (intransitive).
