Abstract

Nut grass rhizome contains several chemical compounds including aetheric oil, flavonoid, saponine, and antidiabetic agents, where as amaryl is a chemical medicine used to treat diabetes.  A study about the comparison between amaryl and nut grass rhizome extract on blood sugar levels of male mice has been conducted.  The study aimed to determine the effect of nut grass rhizome extract compared to amaryl in decreasing the blood sugar levels of male mice.  The mice were divided into four groups of treatment, each group consists of six mice.  The mice were intraperitoneally induced by alloxan to induce diabetes with the dosage of 0,15 mg/40 gr BB, using 0,9% of  NaCl as solvent, before being given the medicine.  Later, the mice were given amaryl and the nut grass rhizome extract, they were group 1 as control :  amaryl 0,4 mg/40 gr BW in 0,4 ml/100 ml of aqua bidest, group 2:  nut grass rhizome extract 4,5 mg/40 gr BB in 0,4 ml/100 ml of aqua bidest, group 3:  nut grass rhizome extract 45 mg/40 gr BB in 0,4 ml/100 ml of aqua bidest, group 4:  nut grass rhizome extract 135 mg/40 gr BB in 0,4 ml/100 ml of aqua bidest.  The result showed that the mice given nut grass rhizome extract with the dosage of 135 mg/40 g BW had significantly decreased blood sugar level compared to amaryl.  This was the effect of flavoniod compound in the nut grass rhizome extract which was rich in antioxidants so it could decrease the blood sugar levels of the diabetic mice.Key words:  amaryl, nut grass rhizome extract, intraperitoneal, flavonoid, anti oxidants, diabetes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine differences in the viability of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) isolates on MRS medium supplemented with various concentrations molasses. Concentration variation molasis used as controls were 0%, 1%, 2% and 3%. Variation of time incubation on each of the media that is 0 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The viability of each isolate was viewed with the population of Log (cells/ml) which grow on the medium and the number of generations and time of generations. The results showed that the concentration molasses added to MRS affect the viability of LAB. Concentration of 1% makes LAB better viability than controls. Total population continues to increase at the end of the incubation with a yield of 1.17 generations in time 20.46 hours/generation. In contrast to controls, reduced population size at the end of the incubation so as not to produce a generation. LAB viability in addition molasses 2% and 3% live on 48 hours of incubation. This is indicated by the number of population increased at 48 hours of incubation, and then decreased at the end of incubation. The addition of concentration variation in the types of bacteria showed different viability. At B1 adding molasses 2% and 3% live on 48 hours of incubation and control can only live on a 24 hours incubation, whereas the B3, the control can remain alive at 48 hours of incubation. In contrast to the controls on B4 can survive on 48 hours of incubation, whereas the addition of 3% molasses can only live on a 24 hours incubation. Key words : Lactic Acid Bacteria/LAB, Molasses,  Viability

Abstract

Maize production in each year tends to decrease. One reason is the weeds. Weeds is animportant issue because it can compete with the main crop that can reduce crop production. The purpose of this research to determine: (1). The effect of weeds species on the growth andproduction of maize, (2). The effect of weed density on the growth and production of maize,(3). Interaction between the type and density of weeds in influencing the growth andproduction of maize. The research was conducted in Natar, South Lampung and WeedLaboratory Faculty of Agriculture, university of Lampung from December 2014 to April2015. The treatments arranged factorial (3x5) in a strip plot design with three replications. The first factor is the species of weed that are Asystasia gangetica, Rottboelia exaltata, andCyperus rotundus. The second factor is 5 weed density that are 0, 10, 20, 40, and 80populations of weeds/m2. If the assumptions are met, the data is analyzed using ANOVA,followed by Least Significant Difference Test (LSD) 5%. The result showed that : (1).Species of weeds affects plant shoot dry weight, the weight of maize cobs, and the weight ofgrain maize but did not affect plant height, number of leaves, plant populations, cob length, cob diameter, and weighs 100 grains. (2). The density of 40 weeds/m2affects weight of 100grains, but the density of 10, 20, and 80 weeds/m2did not affect the growth and productionof maize. (3). There is no interaction between species and density of weeds in influencingthe growth and production of maize.Keyword: maize, weeds, competition

Abstract

Soybean is one of the crops that produce seeds with high protein content, as well as used by the inhabitants of Indonesia. Domestic soybean production can not meet the needs of the national soybean thus needs to be improved, one through breeding varieties with superior. One important step in plant breeding is the selection. To save time and costs of selection, it is necessary to determine the estimated correlation between characters  and to determine the causal relationship between characters used path analysis. Through path analysis can be seen directly and indirectly influence between variables forecaster with the response variable. The purpose of this study to obtain information (1) correlation between characters agronomic towards production. (2) direct and indirect effects of agronomic between characters towards production. The research was conducted from October 2013 until January 2014 in the integrated field laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung and observations made in Laboratory of Seed and Plant Breeding, University of Lampung. Soybean seeds used were  F5 generation zuriat from Wilis x Mlg 2521,  Willis and Mlg 2521. The treatment laid out in a randomized block design,  2 replications. The results showed that  there was a positive phenotype correlation between character of days to flowering, plant height, number of branches, number of pods, weight of 100 grains with grain weight per plant and there was no correlation between day to harvesting with the seed weight per plant. Direct selection of the most effective  was through the number of pods because number of  pods have a direct effect almost equivalent to the correlation. The relationship between the number of pods  and weight of seeds per plant explained a real relationship. Keywords: correlation, path analysis, selection, soybean

Abstract

Sorghum is one of serealia plants that have a big potential to be developed. Sorghum is beneficial as a source of food, animal feed, as well as various industrial raw materials. Sorghum is potential to be developed with the application of proper cultivation, one of them is optimal maintenance. The lack of maintenance cause low production. One of maintenance is weed control. Weeds can create a competition with cultivation plants to fight means growing. Type and weed density are influence growth a development of sorghum. The purpose of this research is to know: (1) The influence of type of weeds to growth and production of sorghum plants, (2) The influence of weeds density to growth and production of sorghum plant, and (3) There is interaction between type and weeds density when influence the growth of weeds, also growth and production of sorghum plants. This research is done in South Lampung and weeds laboratory University of Lampung on December 2014 - April 2015. Treatments arranged in a factorial strip plot design with three replications. Abstract

Soybean is an alternative stapple food which use by all people in Indonesia. However, domestic soybean production does not meet the needs of the national soybean. To meetthe needs done, it important to assemble the soybean breeding to improved the noblevarieties. Plant breeding is largely determined by the ability of breeders to select.Selection can be done by estimating the correlation coefficient between thecomponents of the results and outcomes. To determine the causal relationship betweenyield and yield components used path analysis. Path analysis of correlation coefficientwill break into the direct and indirect influence. The purpose of this study are todetermine (1) the correlation between the components of the results and outcomes; (2)direct and indirect influence between the components of the results and outcomes. Theexperiment was conducted from March to July 2014 in field trials of POLINELA(Lampung State Polytechnic) and in Seed Laboratory of University of Lampung.Soybean seed used is the result of crossing Wilis F6 generation x B3570. Treatmentarranged in a perfect randomized group design with two replications. The results ofcorrelation analysis showed correlation great and positive value indicated by thecomponent total number of pods per plant and grain weight per plant (0.80 *),hundred grain weight and grain weight per plant (0.72 *), and the number ofproductive branches and grain weight per plant (0.57 *). Results of the analysisshowed cross large direct effect on the character of the total number of pods per plantto grain weight per plant (0.89), which is almost as large as the correlation (0.80 *).Then the correlation coefficient was actually measure the degree of closeness of theirrelationship. Therefore, the selection is based on the total number of pods will be veryeffective to get genotype expectations that have high yields. Keywords: Soybean, Selection, correlation, analysis of cross

Abstract

The experiments was conducted at Kasang village, district of Batang Anai, Padang Pariaman regency during June until December 2013. The objectives of this experiment was to increased lowland rice production through specific location of nutrient management (SLNM) on low potential productivity of lowland. Four packages of fertilization such as Package A, B, C and D were arranged in Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with 6 replications. Result of this experiment showed that; (1) SLNM treatments were significantly affected plant growth such as tiller number and plant high. Saveral of yield components also significantly affected by SLNM treatments packages such as panicles number, number of seeds per panicle, and percentage of filled grains. SLNM package A, B, and C significantly increased grain yields such as 24.9%,  34.2%, and 29.5% respectively compred to farmer package (Package D). The low grain yield with Famer package caused insufficient nutrient supplied for plant growth and yield is due to low fertilizer application and inaccurate nutrient management. The experiment suggested that the best application of inorganic fertilizer should be followed or combined with organic fertilizer such as animal manure or compost and  the application of thus material should be in mature condition. Key Words:  rice, specific location, fertilizer
