Abstract

Four flavonoid glycosides have been isolated from the leaves of Crotalaria anagyroides. The glycosides are 1) apigenin 7-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl (1!6)-β-glucopyranosida, 2) apigenin 7-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl (1!2)-β-glucopyranoside, 3) chrysoeriol 7-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl (1!6)-β-D-glucopyranoside, 4) chrysoeriol 7-O-β-D-apiofuranosil (1!2)-β-D-glucopyranoside. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods of UV, 1H, 13C and 2D-NMR DEPT, COSY and HMBC experiments.

Abstract

Nerium oleander is one of the plants that can be developed to be a herbal medicine because the leaf extract has an antibacterial activity against some microorganisms and empirically had been used to solve the acne problem. The anti acne formulation should not make the acne worse because of mistaken to choose the dosage form. The suspension dosage form (has no oil content makes the acne worse) containing the dried leaf extract of Nerium oleander in 97% alcohol was chosen to be formulated by varying respectively carbomer, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose and tragacanth as a suspending agent. The concentration of Nerii folium extract in the suspension was based on the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration of the extract against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus. The evaluation of the formula was done by physical stability test including organoleptic test (color and odor), pH, volume of sedimentation, mean particle diameter size, viscosity stored in low temperature of 4oC, room tperature of 28oC, and high temperature of 40oC, cycling test and mechanical test. The results showed that suspension with sodium carboxy methyl cellulose as the suspending agent has better physical stability than carbomer or tragacanth.

Abstract

The study of synthesis and antibacterial activity test of N,N'-divanilidene-ethylendiamine was performed. N,N'-divanilidene-ethylendiamine was synthesized by reacting vaniline with ethylendiamine in ethanol pH 1, and the structure was elucidated based on IR and 1H-NMR spectra data. Antibacterial activity test was performed using minimum inhibition concentration method (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922. The results showed that N,N'-divanilidene-ethylendiamine has antibacterial activity with MIC of 2 mg/mL against the the bacteria.

Abstract

Rosella calyx (Hibiscus sabdariffa) has been reported exhibited on decreasing high blood pressure activity. Celery herb (Apium graveolens) has been acknowledged as an antihypertension herb with vasodilator and diuretic effect. Combination of the extracts was expected to provide synergism effect on decreasing high blood pressure. This study was intended to prepare the combination of herbal tea from standardized extracts of rosella calyx and celery herb. Standardization of rosella calyx and celery herb included determination of several specific and non-specific parameters. Three different formulas of herbal tea were prepared that would be hedonically tested to obtain the most favorable herbal tea formula from the 30 panelists. The most favorable formula was formula C which contained rosella calyx (2 gram) and celery herb (0.5 gram).

Abstract

Scientific evaluation on pharmacological activity of medicinal herbs required repro-ducible and valid method-induced ulcer models in animal. In this study, the method of antiulcerogenic effect was investigated using several inducers. The male white Sprague-Dawley rats divided into five groups which were orally administrated water, indomethacin (48 mg/kg bw), aspirin-HCl (150 mg/kg bw), 96% ethanol (1 ml/200 g bw), and 80% ethanol (1 ml/200 g bw), respectively. The result of this study showed that the group was induced with 80% ethanol demonstrated the highest ulcer index. Histological examination of the stomach showed abnormality of mucosa cells on the aspirin-HCl, 96% ethanol, and 80% ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model in rats.

Abstract

Leaves of tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) has been traditionally used to treat some diseases such as: constipation, dyspepsia, flatulence and urinary tract infection. The leaves extract also reported has antibacterial and antidiabetic activities. It is essential to determine its specific and non specific parameters in assesing the quality and safety. The samples collected from three different perferctures. Grounded samples were macerated with ethanol. The extracts were subjected to determine its characteristic parameters. Parameter of quality for the extracts consisted of water content, ethanol-extractive, water-extractive, loss on drying, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, solvent residue and heavy metal content. Phytochemical identification showed that the ex-tract contains flanovoid, tannin, glycosides, and saponin. TLC chromatogram using chloroform-methanol-water (80:12:2) as mobile phase, exhibited 4 spots after sprayed with iron(III) chloride. Total phenolic was determined pectrophotometrically using Folin Ciocalteu reagent, gave 0.35-8.24% total phenolic as gallic acid.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglicemia and associated with abnormalities in carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolisms. Patients with DM in the world continue to increase along with population growths. Starting from this condition, searching for sources of DM treatment is always performed. One therapy of DM is a-glucosidase inhibitor. a-Glucosidase is an enzyme that can break down a complex carbohydrate into simple sugar. lhe inhibiton of this enzyme can retard the rate of carbohydrate digestion resulting in a delay in glucose absorption. The purpose of this studywas to identify the content of chemical compound and to test the a-glucosidase inhibitory activity in ethanolic extracts of some plants used as antidiabetic. a-Glucosidase inhibitory activity test carried out by spectrophotometric method. The simplisia powder was extracted by reflux using 80% ethanol. Based on a-glucosidase inhibitory activity test, all the plant extracts were active in inhibiting a-glucosidase. lhe three most active extracts were Ceiba pentandra (L.) Gaetern bark extract, Saccharum offcinarum root extract, and Persea americana Mill. bark extract with IC50 of 5.16, 10.35 and 10.83 ppm, respectively. They contain glycoside, tannin, and saponin. The test results of the kinetics enzyme inhibition showed that Randu bark extract had competitive inhibitory activity.

Abstract

Drug interactions can occur in the use of two or more drugs simultaneously, including the use of synthetic drug with herbal medicine. Combination of glibenclamide with noni juice (Morinda citrifolia Linn.) often used by diabetic patient to decrease their blood glucose level. lhe aim of this research was to know the interaction between glibenclamide and noni juice administration on blood glucose level. This research used 24 Sprague-Dawley male rats which were divided into 6 groups. Before the experiment, the rats were first induced by alloxan, except group 1, which was the normal control. Group 2 was the control of diabetic without given any drugs. Group 3 and 4 were the control of glibenclamide (0.9 mg/200g body weight of rat) and of noni juice (2.5 ml/200g body weight of rat) respectively. Group 5 and 6 were the interaction test group which were given glibenclamide (0.9 mg/ 200 g body weight rat) and noni juice (2.5 ml or 5.0 ml/200 g body weight of rat) with an hour interval. The blood glucose level was measured by using spectrophotometer with o-toluidine as reagent. The result of this research shows that noni juice at a dose 5.0 ml/200 g body weight rat was able to increased the reduction of blood glucose levels by glibenclamide after two weeks administration
