Abstract

Pendidikan adalah usaha sadar yang dengan sengaja dirancangkan untuk mencapai tujuan yang telah ditetapkan. Pendidikan juga merupakan usaha manusia untuk menumbuhkan dan mengembangkan potensi-potensi pembawaan baik jasmani maupun rohani sesuai dengan nilai-nilai yang ada di dalam masyarakat dan kebudayaan. Sedangkan pendidikan Islam adalah proses mengubah tingkah laku individu peserta didik pada kehidupan pribadi, masyarakat dan alam sekitarnya. Proses tersebut dilakukan dengan cara pendidikan dan pengajaran sebagai sesuatu aktivitas asasi dan profesi di antara sekian banyak profesi asasi dalam masyarakat. Remaja sebagai penerus generasi adalah tonggak penerus peradaban. Artikel ini membahas tentang urgensi pendidikan Islam bagi remaja sebagai upaya penguatan karakter.

Abstract

This research analyzed students’ perception of synchronous learning through three aspects. The design of the research was descriptiveresearch. To gather the data, semi-structuredinterview guidelines were used as the instrument. The subject or the key informants of this research consisted of 25 students of the K3 year 2020 English Education at Universitas Negeri Padang. The researcher used random cluster sampling to pick out the sample. Data analysis showed that students had positive perceptions in terms of the teaching material and the student interaction aspect. Yet, they had negative perceptions about the aspect of the learning environment. The students claimed, in terms of learning environment, synchronous learning created a monotonous learning atmosphere they felt bored, unfocused and easily distracted. Therefore, it could be concluded that, if among the synchronous learning aspects, one aspect was perceived negatively, there was a possibility that the learning process was not yet optimal. Thus, it was suggested that the learning environment aspect should be given more attention to due to its impact on students’ learning process.

Abstract

The activity of English language learning does not just happen inside of the class but also it happens outside of the classroom where learning occurs independently. Social media is considered as a source of online material that can play a key role in the teaching and learning field. This research aimed to know students’ perceptions on the use of social media for learning English based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) seen from two indicators; Perceive Ease of Use (PEOU) and Perceive Usefulness (PU). The populations of this research were the students of the 3rd grade at SMP Negeri 22 Padang in the 2022/2023 academic year. Simple random sampling was used in this research where the total sample was 63 students. This research was a descriptive study where quantitative approach was used to analyse the data. Based on the data that taken from the questionnaire as an instrument, it can be concluded that using social media for learning English based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) provided positive perceptions by the students. Students also perceived positive perceptions for the ease of use and the usefulness in the context of learning English using social media. It is shown by the result provided from the questionnaire.

Abstract

In teaching and learning activities, the learning environment is very important. It helps in the delivery of educational activities. Especially when teaching English. Students who study English must stay focused because it is a foreign language for Indonesians. The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of the physical environment in the classroom. The subjects in this study were students of SMPN 23 Solok Selatan. The object in this study is the student's perception of various indicators. This research method is descriptive quantitative. Data collection techniques using questionnaires. The results of this study are found in five indicators, namely: the first indicator of indoor air quality obtained a positive score of 3.12. The level of achievement of the respondents was 77.98%, the second indicator of lighting obtained a positive score of 3.12. The level of achievement of the respondents was 78.17%, the three acoustic indicators obtained a positive score of 3.08. The level of achievement of the respondents was 77.14%, the four indicators of building age and quality obtained a positive score of 3.09. The level of achievement of the respondents was 77.3%, the five class size indicators obtained a positive score of 3.08. The level of achievement of respondents is 76.42%. That is, students perceive positive perceptions about the state of the physical environment in their class. The physical environment of the class is very important, to support students in learning and teachers in teaching, there must be adequate facilities. Especially in English teaching and learning subjects, considering that English is a foreign language.

Abstract

This study purposed to find out the difficulties faced by eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Padang in reading comprehension and to find out the factors that most causing the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension of narrative text. This study was conducted through a descriptive quantitative method. This sample was 40 students chosen by using simple random sampling. Moreover, the data were collected from using a reading comprehension test and by distributing questionnaire. The finding of this study indicated that the majority of students faced difficulties in reading comprehension of narrative text. The mean of students’ score from reading comprehension test was 49,7, it was categorized into less category. The difficulties faced by eleventh grade students were in identifying reference (67,5%), understanding meaning of word/ vocabulary (58,8%), determining main idea (52,5%), identifying generic structures (50,8%), finding specific/ factual information (50%), and making inference/ moral value (46%). Then, the factors that most causing students’ difficulties are lack of a good reading strategy (1,41), lack of knowledge about grammar (1,44), lack of vocabulary (1,60) and speed reading (2,50). These four factors were categorized into very low and low category.

Abstract

This research is designed to identify English language needs in the hospitality and travel industry. The data was obtained from the General Manager of Garuda Indonesia Padang, the HRD Manager of Grand Zuri Hotel Padang, and 24 employees working in both those companies. The researchers used instruments; an interview and a questionnaire. Interviews were conducted with the two managers, while questionnaires were distributed to the employees of the companies. The interviews were transcribed and then analyzed using a descriptive approach. The questionnaires were analyzed Software SPSS for Windows release 22.0. This research reveals that, in the hospitality and travel industry, speaking (35%) and listening (33%) are the most needed of the four (4) language skills. These skills are primarily needed to greet customers (who are dominantly non-native speakers of English). In addition, the employees in the two companies are mostly required to serve customers whose English is basic. The findings of this research are expected to provide valuable information for ESP teachers and curriculum designers in organizing ESP syllabus and teaching materials

Abstract

The study fulfils the gap in teachers' scientific paper writing skills, which benefits both the academic community and pupils. Teachers' competence can be improved so that they can engage in evidence-based practices, contribute to academics, and deliver engaging educational experiences that develop critical thinking in their pupils. Scientific paper writing training is critical for developing high school teachers' professional competency. The purpose of this study was to look into the efficiency of such training in improving teacher abilities and knowledge. A quantitative descriptive method was employed in the study to evaluate the efficiency of a scientific paper writing training programme for high school teachers. Data was gathered by assessing the quality of the teachers' papers using a quality assessment form. The data was analysed using statistical procedures such as the t-test and N-Gain analysis. The t-test compared pre- and post-treatment scores, while the N-Gain analysis assessed the training's effectiveness. These methodologies aided in determining the program's impact on teachers' writing skills and quantifying the level of development in their scientific paper writing competence. These data indicate the training program's effectiveness in improving teachers' understanding and skills in scientific paper writing. Training in scientific paper writing improves high school teachers' professional competency by increasing their understanding of article components, scholarly practices, and writing abilities. It emphasizes the importance of continuing professional growth and filling gaps in critical thinking and interdisciplinary writing.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most essential abilities in learning English. Story completion is the right method in learning English speaking that the students being able to speak in class within a group. This Research is conducted to find the effect of the use of the story completion technique on students’ speaking English Ability in grade 9 at SMP Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The students of SMP Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP in grade 9 contributed to the study’s population. The population consisted of 80 students and class IX C was selected to be the sample in this study through the cluster random sampling method. Ten sessions of the treatment were given to the students including the pretest and posttest that were held to conduct this research. Researchers used an English-speaking test by retelling a narrative story to collect the data. Story completion helps the students increasing their interest to speak English. The result of the data analysis denote that the null hypothesis found in this study is rejected which means that the effect of using story completion technique in students’ speaking English ability does give a significant effect to increase the speaking English ability of the students,and is accepted as the study’s result.

Abstract

This correlational study investigates the correlation between eleventh-grade students' vocabulary mastery and speaking skills at SMAN 1 Kec Payakumbuh. The primary objectives include evaluating vocabulary and speaking skill levels and determining their relationship. This research aims to enhance practical and theoretical aspects of speaking activities. The researcher employed a quantitative method using Pearson’s correlation to measure the relationship between two variables: students' vocabulary mastery (independent variable, X) and their speaking ability (dependent variable, Y). The study population includes all 11th graders at SMAN 1 Kec Payakumbuh for the academic year 2021/2022, totalling 160 students. A sample of 31 students from class XI IPA 3 was selected. Tests for speaking ability and vocabulary mastery were conducted to assess the relationship between the variables. The findings of this study demonstrated a connection — one that was validated by statistical examination of the data — between the students'' vocabulary knowledge and their ability to communicate verbally. It was revealed that there is a substantial association between the vocabulary knowledge of students in the eleventh grade at SMA N 1 Kec Payakumbuh and their speaking ability. The research reveals a positive correlation, indicating that improved vocabulary is linked to better speaking abilities. Statistical analysis supports this, with a significant p-value below 0.05, validating the hypothesis.
